What You Remind Me Of, chapter 14
"Ok, guys. Are you ready to go," Billie asked Joey and Jake as we reached the car.
"Obliviously, or we would still be inside," Joey smirked.
"Smartass," Billie retorted as he smiled at his oldest son.
"It's generic, Billie. It honestly is," I said, defending Joey.
"Mel," Joey smiled at me, "have I told you lately that I love you?"
I laughed, "Oh Lord."
"MEL," Adie said as we entered the house, "you're still alive?"
"Ha, ha. Yeah. It is hard to believe, but alas here I am." As the boys ran off to their rooms to put their stuff away, Billie sat down on the couch turning on the TV. Adie and I both rolled our eyes as we walked into the kitchen.
"So," I said looking up at Adie from my glass of water, "when were you going to tell the boys about Mike." She sighed. I sighed. I suppose we should have talked about this over Billie's credit card and new shoes, but yet, here we were.
"Wow, how do you-"
"Joey. He said he was afraid that Billie would be upset. But, I told him that we had already talked about you and Mike, and that Billie was ok with it."
"Well," she said looking into her coffee, "I guess now would be the best time to talk to them about this. Jesus Mel, why do I have to love my kids enough to talk to them about every fucking thing." We laughed. Adie was a good mom, she was a good person. And for a brief moment, I felt bad for shaking the thing that she and Billie once called their marriage.
"Because, you're a good mom. And because if you don't, you'll regret it for the rest of your life."
"Damn, I hate it when you're right. Oh God, help me, I sound like Bill."
Billie's POV
I love my kids, I love my ex wife, honestly, I do. But I was ready to get out of there. I looked over at Mel, who was looking out of the passenger's side window. "Melody Armstrong, are you with us?"
"Unfortunately, yes," she said looking at me with a smile.
"Ha fucking ha, Mel," I said with my oh-so-sarcastic tone, "you're a funny kid, you know that?"
"That's why you married me."
"No," I said turning the radio, before The Backstreet Boys killed me, "I married you because you're a good fuck."
"Obliviously, or I would be able to fit into my jeans."
"You're the one who wanted to have babies and a white picket fence."
"And, don't forget, a fish named Speedy."
I looked at her like she was on crack, "He's dead."
"And your point is... ."
"My point is I have to talk to you about something."
"Ok."
"Mike. Adie. Two people you love very much, right?"
"Yeeeaaah, what of it?"
"They're together. You know, like dating together."
"Awesome, awesome. Adie has a good man. Mike has a good woman. The world keeps turning."
"Ok," she said as she placed her hand on my knee, "just checking."
