What You Remind Me Of, chapter 8
I didn't expect things to go the way they did with Adi, in the beginning anyway. I always thought I would be with her for the rest of my life. And, that I would spend forever wondering about Mel, and where the hell she was. Funny how, life works, isn't it?
"Are you gonna be ok?" she was so sweet. So innocent, still.
"I think so," I say, looking over at her from the road, for a brief second.
"Billie?"
"Yeah Mel?" she says nothing, but instead, she reaches over and grabs my hand. And we ride the rest of the way home like this. She and I. Billie and Melody. Hand-in-hand.
"Wow, Billie can still cook," she said sarcastically, referring to the cereal I had made her for dinner.
"Yeah, well, you can't have your cake and eat it too."
"Oh, I beg to dream and differ from that hollow lie. You can too. You can have your cake, and eat a piece of it... All at the same time."
"What the hell is 'beg to dream and differ from that hollow lie'? Did you make that up? 'Cause it's a rather gay phrase."
"Well, so is 'rather gay', and yes. I did make it up. Thank you."
"Well, don't be surprised if you hear it in one of our songs."
"Nope, not that phrase, I have a trademark on it... Sorry."
"I bet," I said as I scooted over, getting closer to her on the couch.
"Don't you think that it's a little early for you to be puttin' the moves on me, now, Mr. Armstrong?"
"Nah, it's 7:20 pm, we're good."
"You just ended a eleven, twelve year marriage, like two hours ago. I think it's a little early."
"Ok," I kissed her. And it was a long, hot kiss. "What about now, still too early?"
"No."
Melody's POV
WOW! Ladies, I know I said earlier, that our sex life was none of your business, but WOW! Maybe it's cause it's been fifteen years, but... He's untouchable. "Huh," he said as he pushed my hair out off of the back of my neck, "the tattoos. I had almost forgotten about them."
"Well, I haven't. Neither has my mother."
"Ha, that's your fault. You're the one who wore you hair up during our visit that Christmas. Remember?"
"How could I forget? When my daddy opened the door and you were laying in my bed naked, and I had just woke up... Still naked, and he put two and two together... "
Billie was laughing along with me, at the memory of that first Christmas visit to my family. "He was PISSED," I continued, "I thought he was going to have a heart attack. But, I was even more pissed than he was, because, he called you 'Snake'."
"Your dad called me Snake?"
"Yeah, and then I told him to be nice, or we would leave."
"Your dad told me once, that he loved me. You wanna know why?"
"Why," I said kissing him softly.
"Because, he said that you had never been so happy as you were with me in your whole life. I told him that it was because you were always getting high off of my clothes, 'cause they always smelled like pot."
"Billie!"
"I am joking." He said before he kissed me. When we finally pulled back, his phone rang. As he got you to answer it, thinking it could be Joey or Jake, I took a moment to take in this moment. It was amazing. But, how long would it last? How long before he realized that he and Adi were meant to be together? Or, would he just stay with me?
"No, man, we just... I know, I know, I know, but I can't spend the rest of my life with someone I don't love." His phone conversation with Mike interrupted my thoughts. And it had to be Mike, because I could hear his voice on the other line. As he climbed back into bed, I lay down beside him, and I let the sound of his voice put me to sleep. "... Well, Mike, I think we should put two or three more songs on it too. Yeah, two weeks. Thanks buddy... " and that's the last thing I remember hearing that night.
