What You Remind Me Of, chapter 9

Billie's POV

"Morning. Sleep well," she asks as I look up at her from where I lay on the bed.
"Hey. Yeah, best sleep I've had in... O, I don't know fifteen years. How about you? And, why are you up so early?"
"Yes, I did thank you. And, unlike some people, I have to work for a living."
"No you don't. You know, that your dad would take care of you."
"WHATEVER! And besides, I don't want my dad to take care of me."
"Let me take care of you, then. I can. And you know it."
"Maybe later, Billie, but not today. I have to go to work now."

So after she left, I had to go take care of some "end of marriage" shit. What's his and what's hers kinda stuff. And I also had to go by the studio, just to see what I could get done, had lunch with Mike and Tre, went over some more "end of marriage" shit when Adi called about the house and how got it, (and, yes, I let her have it. I don't need it, but she- well, the kids need it more than ever, now), and at the end of the day I came home to an empty house. Mel must still be at work, I thought to myself as walked through the apartment, shifting her mail in my hand, before tossing it on the kitchen table. I grabbed a beer out of the fridge and sat down on the couch. What time is it? I looked at the clock on the wall. 4:05. Good, Mel should be home in about five minutes. I had bought this apartment after I got back to New York. I wondered if Mel still had the one we lived in? That was probably where Travis was living. By himself. Travis. It just dawned on me that we hadn't even mentioned him since that day in the café. I didn't know him, but I still didn't like him. Neither did Mel, obviously, since it had been over five months since she ran away from him. Ran away. She had a tendency to do that when things got serious. But, she wasn't running anywhere but late now. Not anymore, I thought as I heard the door unlock, she's home now.

"Hey!"
"Hi," she replied as I kissed her on the cheek. She looked tired.
"Good day?"
"Mmm. So-so. You?"
"I'm getting a divorce. And I just got back from the lawyers office like fifteen minutes before you got home. What do you think?"
"I'm sorry. I think we should go get some food. That's what I think."

Melody's POV

So, I'm just sitting in a restaurant with Billie, minding my own business, when out of the blue, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I look up and...
"Hello Melody." Oh God. It's Travis.
"Travis, hey." Billie was looking at me as I stood up, to have an awkward hug with a guy who asked me to marry him, and for a response, I ran way.
"So, am I interrupting something? A date. Maybe?"
"Umm, actually, Travis, this is Billie. Billie, this is... Travis."
"Hi, Billie." And you just know Billie's going to nod his head.
"Hi." Somehow, I could tell he was pissed. Or getting there. And he was going fast.
"So, Mel, are you and Billie-"
"Actually, we're living together. Have been for sometime now," Billie always had a smartass response.
"Oh, really? Well, I'll let you two get back to your meal then." Geez, Trav, thanks for ruining it.
"Ok, but it was good to see you."
"Yeah, I'll see you around."

"What the hell was that Billie?" We were on our way home, and the sooner we got there, the better.
"I was only telling your ex-boyfriend the truth, Mel." I honestly didn't feel like doing this tonight. Let it go Mel, I thought as I looked out of the passenger's side window.
"Fine, Billie. Whatever." I remembered why we fought so much. He was a jerk sometimes. An ass. But when I looked into his eyed that night, after we got home and went to bed, I also remember why I loved him. I remember why I love him still.
"Mel?"
"What?"
"I think I look better than Travis, do you?" he could be so stupid sometimes.
"Yeah, whatever. I still say Brad Pitt looks better than the both of you, but whatever you say."
"Goodnight Mel."
"'Night Billie."
"I love you."
"Billie, I love you, but sweetie, I'm tired. I worked eight hours today on three hours of sleep. So can you shut up?"
"Sorry," he said laughing.
"Good. You better be," I said as I smiled and kissed him. And then I went to sleep. In Billie's arms.

Billie's POV

It had been a year since my divorce. And as sad as it was, I had moved on. Joey and Jake had met Mel. Hell, even Adi met her. And likes her. It's crazy, I know, but Mel's just so easy to love...
"Billie," Adi said as I walked in to the house. I was dropping the boys off, along with a necklace Mel was letting Adi borrow for a party that Mel thought was going to my surprise birthday. "Have you got the ring yet?"
"No, Adi, where the hell am I gonna put it? Mel will eventually come across it."
"Listen Billie, I have to go pick up the earrings I got for my sister's birthday tomorrow, so I'll just pick it up then and keep it at our- I mean at my house."
"Would you please? And I'll love you forever."
"I've heard that before, Billie," she said smiling. The boys went outside to play and she and I had some coffee and talked more about "the surprise attack", as we were calling it, and about two hours later, I left. In two week, I was going to do it...
