As We Continue to Fall, chapter 2
When Sam woke, she was covered in plaster 'Shit' she thought 'It wasn't a dream. ' She could move her head, for that she was thankful. She saw her right leg propped up and she had an I. V. Sticking out of her arm. It seemed that only her left hand was broken, the one she had to write with, so at least she wouldn't have to do school work for a while. She was in a double room, she saw a man with black hair yelling at a nurse.
"This is supposed to be a private room, how the hell do you expect him to get better with this girl in here. What are you dumb? I paid extra for a single room..." Sam thought she recognized the voice, but it could have just been the drugs. She laid her head back down as the nurse escorted the man to the waiting area. "Visiting hours are over, sir and we don't like that kind of intimidation." She while pushing him out the door. Sam laughed and looked at the boy in the bed next to her. He was reading a comic and looked about her age.
"Hi I'm Samantha, Sam for short. It looks like we're going to be room mates, what's your name?" She asked trying to be friendly. It was late, so she didn't expect the man or the nurse to be back yet. He looked up from his reading he looked like Billie Joe. He looked exactly like him.
"I'm Joseph Marciano." He was polite, sweet and his eyes made her melt. He was fifteen and a hottie, she had to bite her lip to keep from screaming.
"So what are you in for?" She asked, keeping a low profile. His dad (Billie Joe, cool! ) seemed upset that she was in the room with him. Maybe it was something he didn't want the public to know? Or perhaps he didn't want crazed fan girls coming to mob his son.
"Cancer. My doctor says that it isn't that bad but my dad is going crazy, he wants you out of the room. It doesn't matter to me and it was the only one left in the hospital; its not even bad cancer its stuff people live with everyday and don't die. How about you?" He asked her. Sam's heart jumped into her throat. Cancer. It seemed so final so unworthy of Billie Joe's son. She tried to smiled but ended up with have of one.
"Car accident." Sam shuddered remembering that last night. Joseph looked at her with sympathy.
"Well I hope you feel better, you look pretty banged up." He had such a nice voice, like his fathers it was velvety soft and wrapped around her like a blanket.
"Are you kidding you're much worse than me." She wanted to continue talking but at that moment three faces she knew so well filled the doorway. Billie lead the group with Mike a close second Tre brought up the rear.
"Joseph, get ready to leave we're moving you to a different hospital." Billie said sharply with a stern look over at Sam. Sam winced noticeably. Joseph stayed in his bed.
"No dad, I like it here she doesn't even know who I am, she's not making a big deal about it." Oh if only he knew how much she knew, how many countless hours she had spent looking up things about his father, where he went to school and if he had a girlfriend.
"The answer is no Joseph, we don't want the public to suspect." Billie knew that he was fighting a losing argument but he kept it up, the vein in his head beginning to pop out. Sam had to act quickly this was her only chance.
"Excuse me Mr..." She stopped; this was good play dumb, make sure that he knows that you don't know.
"Armstrong. Billie Joe Armstrong." He answered her in a huff, Sam was sure that he imagined she would become a screaming fan girl at that very moment; but she was composed Sam was smart and she would get this thing.
"Oh, nice to meet you Mr. Armstrong, I'm Sam and I assure you that I'll be as quite as a mouse when you are around, and give your son the privacy he needs." She was good at this and it was fun, 'Maybe I should join drama? ' She thought to herself. She watched as the group huddled and made a decision.
"Alright, we won't move him but if anyone finds out what he's got we'll sue you until all you've got left is the clothes on your back." Mike said, oh god Mike threatened her it was so awesome.
"You've got my word." Did she forget to mention that all she owned was Green Day stuff? They nodded and continued talking to Joseph until the nurse came back and cursed them out.
"Why hello dear you're awake, here's your medicine for pain relief." She said in a much kinder voice, she injected a clear liquid into her I. V. She smiled, "Well dear we're happy to inform that nothing major was injured but you'll be here for quite a while. You have a broken leg and a fractured leg, a broken arm, six broken ribs and a concussion." 'Whoopeety do', Sam thought, 'Get to the good stuff woman what happened to Jay? ' As if reading her mind the nurse said "Your driver died of alcohol poisoning during the night, I'm sorry dear. It seems that last night their were at least ten accidents coming back from the Green Day concert and all of them were drug and alcohol related." The nurse squeezed Sam's hand and left, turning off the lights.
'So Jay was high and drunk? Serves him right. ' Sam thought but to tell the truth she wanted Jay back, she thought that she could fix his problems.
"Don't know who my father is? Right, your a smart girl, I can't wait until tomorrow." Joseph said as Sam began to fall asleep.
"I had to do it, couldn't miss out on my chance to stay in a hospital room with a famous person..." Sam yawned as she slowly fell asleep. She dreamt of the accident, but it wasn't Jay drunk driving it was Joseph and he had lost control of the wheel. She screamed and cried for him to hit the breaks that the semi was to close.
Across the room Joseph Marciano watched as this new element in his life, a girl who didn't go crazy at the mention of his father's name, turned and cried out in her sleep. "You are a mystery Samantha, a puzzle that I wouldn't mind solving." He sighed as he close is eyes and turned on his MP3 player and listened to the comforting sounds of his father's voice.
