As We Continue to Fall, chapter 3

When Sam woke up her family was surrounding her. She saw her mother's tear stained face, her normally perfect make up and little wrinkles made her seem twenty eight when she was really forty one, now she looked like she hadn't slept in days. Her little sisters and brothers were trying to crawl on the bed, she counted them yup all twelve of them were crowded in the hospital room. Her Uncle Jack was here with Aunt Margarita. They all cheered as her eyes turned to slits as she woke for the morning.
"Oh baby doll, we're so glad that you're awake, with Jay being dead and all we were worried about you..." Her mom faltered. "Max wanted to come and see ya but he had to work and..." Sam hushed her with a wave of her arm. Max was her latest boyfriend, but he would just be like the others get her knocked up and then leave her with the kids. The only whole sibling Sam had were my younger twin brothers Chris and Tucker, her dad died and Sam's mom just never found another guy to love her enough to marry her.
"Don't make excuses for him mom, we both know he's watching football... Now if you guys don't mind I'd like to have some quality time with my brothers and sisters." The adults nodded and reminded the little ones that they were to behave themselves. When they left the room and she got all the littlest sibs all tucked into the bed with her it was only then that she noticed that Joseph was watching them. A blush rose in her cheeks but Sam didn't skip a beat
"We were so worried about you Sammy." Alice says her wide blue eyes staring into Sam's hazel ones. Sam laughed even though it hurt her ribs "Why would you be worried about me? I get hurt all the time." Which was true, with each new boyfriend (depending on whether they found her attractive or not) she often 'fell down the stairs'.
"Yea but this time you was in a car accident and dick head died." Tucker says. Chris laughs, it was their joke Jay was the dick head and all my siblings called him that but only when their mom wasn't around.
"Well I'm safe." Linda, the youngest held up a present, she was a mute but everyone knew what she was saying if they spent enough time with her. Sam took the present all surprised, with her good arm she opened it. Inside was her favorite poster. A poster from the 2005 Green Day tour American Idiot. Sam felt her eyes fill with tears as she turned to her little brothers and sisters. "Thank you guys so much, would you like to put it up for me!" They all nodded yes and began to hang the poster so that Joseph wouldn't see it and hopefully neither would his father.
"So this is your family... I like them they're sweet." Joseph said, as Kitten tugged Sam's arm. She was eight and didn't like to speak to strangers she pointed at Joseph and then to the wall "He looks like Billie Joe." Sam nodded and leaned in close to her "Would you like me to introduce you so that you can talk out loud?" She nodded. Sam smiled and said "Gather around everyone, I'd like to introduce you to my room mate, this is Joseph." He waved at them and Sam's little sisters giggled. "Joseph this is Chris, Tucker," She lined them up in order of age, "Mary, Addy, Jack, Daniel, John, Kitten, Prince, Princess, Alice and Linda." In unison they all answered "It's nice to meet you Joseph." Sam smiled as they filed out of her room, her mom made one last stop in to say that they wouldn't be able to come in tomorrow.
"Mom, cut the crap I know that Max doesn't want you guys to leave the house, once you leave that loser you're allowed to come back here... How's the new baby coming any ways?" Sam always knew when her mother was going to have another kid, her mom looked startled but then smiled "You always know don't you Sammy, you always know when another's on the way... Just found out a few days ago it a boy." Sam patted her mom's hand "Don't call me Sammy that was dad's thing." She turned away from her mother who was starting to cry again, "Of course your dad." She left without another word, not even an I love you. Sam turned back to Joseph.
"You just met my family." Sam said when she knew they that they were al the way gone. She felt the blush rise again as he looked at her with those wonderful green eyes.
"I wish I had that many brothers and sisters, I love kids, but all I've got is Jakob." Sam nodded and laughed.
"You wouldn't want them if you lived with them for so long." She puts down her eyes, he didn't say anything about her mother. A different nurse came in, unlike the other one she actually looked nice.
"Joseph its time for your treatment." She said her voice was soft like a flower. Joseph swallowed hard and tried to smile.
"Okay Rita, I'll be out in a second just let me finish my conversation." He said, his voice beginning to shake. Sam felt sorry for him, Rita nodded "Of course sir, I'll be outside." Just as Joseph was about to speak again his dad came rushing into the room. Sam's heart began to pound as it did whenever she was around Joseph or Billie Joe. Billie hugged his son, "It'll be okay, I promise." Sam heard tenderness in his voice that melted her heart. She turned away and when she looked back both Billie and Joseph were crying.
"Dad, can I have a few moments alone with Sam before I go?" Joseph asked his dad. Billie looked up at Sam (who was looking better and more like the girl she used to be). Billie leaned in and whispered something in Joseph's ear. Joseph nodded and whispered something back. Sam had the sneaking suspicion that they were talking about her. Billie smiled and whispered back once more before he left, Joseph got out of his bed and put on a pair of hospital pants. He came over to her side, she turned to her side as best as she could without wincing.
"Today's my first chemo session. I wanted to say that you've been a really great room mate and I hope we can still be friend when my hair's gone." His voice was somber, as though the only thing girls cared about was his hair. Sam smiled and touched it with her good arm.
"I'll miss it but as long as you don't lose your eyes we're good." Sam was flirting, 'Oh my god I'm flirting. ' She thought as she finally realized it. She smiled to herself as he let out a relieved sigh.
"Good, I'll see you when I get back?" He asked as if she would get up and leave.
"Where else am I supposed to go?" She said, as she felt a new blush creep into her cheeks. He went to the door, and looked back at her smiling, she smiled back at him and then turned on her television to wait for his return.
In an hour Joseph came back supported by Mike and Tre, Billie was no where to be seen. He looked so sick, as soon as they reached the bed Tre had to fetch a garbage can because Joseph was dry heaving.
"Is he okay?" Sam asked once Joseph had fallen asleep. Mike and Tre looked up at her, their eyes were sad, more sad then she'd ever seen them.
"It was a tough day, and his dad wasn't there to get him." Tre said, Mike nodded and added "It'll be hard for this kid to lose his hair, it like a birth rite to him." Sam smiled slowly, and sincerely.
"I'm Sam." She said, switching off the T. V. So it was quieter in the room. They looked at her and smiled.
"I'm Mike Dirnt." He gave her a broad smile, Tre put on his best face and said "I'm Tre Cool." Sam laughed, and they laughed back it eased the tension in the room until Billie came back with his wife at his side. When they saw him all of them, Mike, Tre and Sam all gasped.

(Conversation between Billie and Joseph)

"Joseph I have this sneaking suspicion that you like this girl? Am I right or is the old man crazy?" Billie whispered into his son's ear. Joseph nodded and whispered back.
"You are crazy but yeah I like her, she's smart and I think she's pretty underneath all those casts." Billie smiled at his son and whispered back "I think she's had it tough, don't break her heart, but she is quite a catch."
