As We Continue to Fall, chapter 5
For a week Sam had seen nothing of Billie, Tre or Mike. She did see Adrienne once though and she looked depressed but she never let Joseph see it, after his second treatment his hair was completely gone and he began to wear his fathers wig. Sam in a small way thought that it was a good thing that Billie strayed for a while she and Joseph got to talk without interruption, and she felt that their relationship was blooming. He had told her a lot of his secrets and she hers all except for the thing about Jay, that was still to clear in her mind for her to talk about it. She told him about her father, and how only her brothers and sisters were allowed to call her Sammy. He told her about how his father taught him how to play the guitar when he was little and how they thought his brother might have ADD. It was a week after her cast had come off her wrist and she had inherited 6 billion dollars.
"Do you feel any different?" Joseph asked her as they walked to physical therapy. He went to keep her company, she had to got to regain some of her strength back.
"No just that I have to celebrate another year without my dad." She said, Sam was trying really hard to concentrate on her walking, but those green eyes kept drawing her attention back to them. She was using crutches and was still fairly new at them, every once and a while Joseph would have to catch her when she 'almost' fell.
"Oh. So are you sure that they can't reopen the case?" He asked as he opened the door for her. Sam shook her head as she wobbled through.
"They've tried but all his business partners vanished, the fake will didn't have any prints on it and my mom isn't a suspect because she almost killed herself after his death." Sam said before she fell. It wasn't like before when she hadn't been concentrating, okay maybe it was but she had bee trying to keep her balance, of course fate decided to put a bump in the floor. She lost control of her crutches, they clattered to the floor long before she did. To Sam it was all in slow motion, Joseph lunging to catch her and landed on his knees, Sam landing in his soft lap.
"Are you okay?" He asked looking at her legs, which were twisted in awkward positions. It did hurt, her broken (on the mend) leg was throbbing but it wasn't pain that she couldn't handle.
"Yup, with you here I'm always okay." She looked like herself again, the bruises had faded, and the stitches had been taken out, she had begun to put on a bit of make up and brushed her shining hair all the time.
"Thank god." Joseph said before doing the unthinkable. He leaned down and touched his lips to hers. It was a soft, nice kiss, something Sam had only gotten from her father before. She melted into his arms before he broke off. He looked dazed, as Sam was sure she did too and he smiled sheepishly. "Sorry..." He mumbled and Sam laughed.
"No that was wonderful, but if I'm late for therapy they'll kill me so help me up." He stood and helps her get her crutches, when she had her balance he kissed her again. Sam was floating she was perfectly complete now.
"I don't know what's gotten into me except that you're beautiful." Joseph said when they finally continued down the hall. Sam blushed, all from the inside out. Her heart was pounding like it never had with any of her other boyfriends.
"Well I don't know what gotten into me except that you're wonderful." Sam said back, and she saw a blush rise in his cheeks. He gave a small smile and squeezed her hand as they entered the room where both of them would work out for the hour.
An hour later they returned to the room. It was a sight for sore eyes, Billie, Tre, and Mike all sat there; somehow they had gotten their instruments in alone with Sam's lead rose red acoustic, guitar and Joseph's electric guitar colored blue with concert stickers covering it. Tre, and Mike looked different though. With a snort Sam realized that Tre was wearing Mike's hair and Mike was wearing Tre's.
"We thought that in honor of you and your father switching hair we would too." Mike said touching his so Tre Cool hair. "Yeah we couldn't let you have all the fun." Tre said, touching Mike's once hair "Though I have to say I am a smashing blonde."
"Yeah Dad! You rock! You all rock so much, god you guys are great!" Joseph said, as he grabbed his guitar and hugged it "Oh I missed you." He said to it, Billie smiled at him and then turned to Sam "Think you still know how to use it?" He asked pointing to her baby. Sam nodded numbly and sat on her bed and strummed a few notes.
"Yeah, I do...how did you get these in here?" She asked in shock, what did it matter she was surrounded by instruments that was her life!
"We pulled a few strings, all that matters is if you play us one of your songs." Mike said, readying his base. Sam hummed a note to herself, mentally picked a song and began to play. It wasn't one of her singing songs it was part of a concerto she had written. As she continued her fevered playing she watched their faces in awe. When she stopped they clapped.
"I assume you meant more radio music." They nodded and Tre yelled "But that was still kick ass." Sam smiled and hummed a different note she began.
It began on somber chords, the pace quickened and you could hear the pain in the notes, when Sam began to sing her voice was pure, clean but also so soft and sad; so full of pain. "Well nothing hurts and nothing screams, when my covers hug me tight...why'd they have to take you from me...why oh why?" She sung, it was a song to her father, something she had written after her death on piano but had converted it to all her other favorite instruments. "She slowly swallows all her tears and soothes her mind with lies..." She began to stumble when Billie and Joseph joined her on the on their guitars, Mike started strumming calmly on his base and Tre, played when she stopped. When they finished her song there wasn't a dry eye in the house, it was then that Billie decided to tell Joseph something.
"Joseph, your mother and I are...well your mother is having some problems with you being in the hospital, your brother getting sick all the time. Well we've decided to split up." It was hard on Billie but even worse for Joseph.
"But...but why, she told me that everything was fine?" Joseph asked, as his voice began to crack. He whipped his eyes, brushing away unseen tears. Sam watched as Billie took his son into his arms and wept with him.
"She's gotten her name changed back and had given me you and Jakob, no arguments. I guess she just wants to be a teenager again. She wants a fresh start, I guess that I should have one too. I'm going to stop smoking and make sure that you and your bother are both treated with the best doctors money can buy." Billie cried into his son's shoulder. Joseph, hugged his dad.
"I love you dad, I love you as much as the sun loves the moon." Sam watched the beautiful scene unfold and she felt her own tears coming on, she remembered her father's good bye to her 'My baby, I hope you know that I love you more than the sea loves the moon that she reflects each night, more than anyone else ever can. I want you to remember that you are a Trentston and that you will always be smarter than everyone else.'
