There Were Places We Would Go At Midnight..., chapter 12

*Milton-Keynes Concert, 2005*

I stood in the wings of the stage, my heart pounding. I always got a bit nervous before a show, but I knew I would be thrown when I stepped out onto the stage; I could tell by the noise level reaching my ears even behind the stage. 65,000 people. 65,000 of OUR fans. The thought made me sick, yet ecstatic. I felt Mike's hand on my shoulder, and I smiled back at him. I was sure I looked like a deer in the headlights.
"You ready?" he mouthed to me, because it was too loud to speak.
But before I could answer they were calling us out on stage. I walked out first, and all I could see was a sea of heads, screaming, jumping, dancing. And we hadn't even started yet. The noise was unbelievable. Tre banged the first few beats and we began.. I combed the crowd and saw Adie standing in front of the gates of the mosh pit. She blew me a kiss and I winked at her. But before I knew it the exhilaration of the crowd was taking over me, and I was completely lost. The person I knew at home was gone, and the person I knew on stage, that familiar, exciting, no-rules guy was back. And he stayed with me until the last chord. I was drenched with sweat, completely out of breath, and I could have played for two more hours. I walked off stage with Tre, Mike, and Jason, and found Adie waiting for me in the dressing room. I had the towel I had been handed hanging over my shoulder, and I was sipping a water bottle. Overall, I didn't look my best. Probably didn't smell my best either. Yet she still came over and grabbed me in a huge hug, kissing the side of my neck, and whispering in my ear, "You were amazing." 'No, you are,' I thought. She pulled back from me but kept my neck between her hands, staring into my eyes.
"So, Mr. Rock Star. How does 65, 000 feel?"
I sighed, plopping myself down on the couch.
"Holy shit."
She laughed, sitting next to me.
"That great, huh?"
"Well, yeah.. And no. I don't know it's just... God.. I don't know if I WANT 65,000 people to like me," I joked.
She laughed again. "I don't think that's a choice at this point. But yeah, long way from Gilman Street, ain't it."
"Just a bit." I looked over and saw Mike standing over her shoulder in the doorway.
"Giman was just as loud, though." He mused. I laughed.
"True dat, homie." I got up, stuck out my hand for Adie and helped her up, and we joined the biggest after-party of all time.
