These Friends Of Mine, chapter 25

Billie strolled the halls of the hospital trying to loosen up. It wasn't all bad... He didn't know why, but it wasn't. He kept telling himself that as he got in the elevator and pushed the button for Jade's floor. It wasn't long before he realized that he was standing next to Jade's doctor.
"Hello Mr. Armstrong. Judging by the farely pleasent mood I believe you've heard the good news?" he asked.
Billie scratched his head. "No. I was actually trying to make some good news." he replied.
"Well you're in luck. I am glad to report that we have retrived a sample of O negative blood for your friend. However, it is a small sample. It will probably keep her up for a few hours or so, but after that..."
"It's back to the coma?"
"I'm afriad so."
"This bites."
The elevator made a ringing noise and the doors opened.
"Say what you will. There is still time. Are you heading to her room?"
"Yes."
"I shall be there in a few minutes. See you then."
He stepped out of the elevator and Billie shrugged, that was one weird doctor. He shook his head and walked out. It took him awhile to find Jade's room. He had only been to see her once and then he had been swaped with Tre.
When he finally did find it he went inside, then took a step back. Adrienne was crying her eyes out on her knees by Jade's bed. He tried to think of what to do. Sometimes it was best to leave her be... But she had called for him. He knelt down next to her.
"Adrienne, don't cry baby." Billie calmed his wife. "They'll find more blood."
"You can't promise me that Billie! You can't promise anyone that!" she replied.
"Adie, they already have. It's just enough to bring her out of her coma... But..."
She let a tear go down her cheek. "But she'll just go back in it, won't she?" she asked.
"Yeah." he sighed.
They embraced. The battle seemed like it was already lost... The sound of the door opening made them both jump. They turned to find Jade's doctor holding a small bag with a little bit of red liquid inside it. Blood.
He quickly walked over to where Jade's liquid medicine was, hanging the bag of blood next to the I. V. He took a needle and stuck in her arm. Then he wiped his forehead with a sigh. That bought them a few hours to find more blood for her.
The doctor told them that she would wake up soon, but he also warned them not to grow hopeful. Her consiousness would be temporary and she could very well die if she went into shock again. This made them happy and sad at the same time. Not a normal combination.
The two of them sat around, eager for Jade to wake up. They despratly wanted to say their goodbyes if she was actually going to pass. There were so many things left unsaid and it made the wait even longer.
After what seemed like a lifetime passed, their friend wearily opened her eyes and started coughing. They rushed over to her bed side. She gave them a deer in headlights look and they backed up a bit. Then Adrienne hugged her.
"Oh babe I thought you'd never wake up." she said.
Jade looked confused. "What the hell is going on?" she asked.
"Matt tried to kill you. He did a good job J. J." Billie replied.
"What's that suposed to mean?" she asked again.
He sighed heavily. How do you tell some one they were going to die? It wasn't an easy task and he had difficulty finding the right words. He spoke them as they came, even if they didn't sound brilliant. It just didn't seem right not to explain her situation.
When he was finished there was a solem silence. 'I have hours to live... ' Jade reflected. 'Hours. ' She couldn't believe this was happening, and didn't want to. It was all just a dream. Yeah, that's it. A really bad dream.
She had started to tell them what she thought of everything when the door opened again. Mike and Tre enterd. Soon she was surrounded by her closet friends, all of them in tears. The sight of them made her cry too.
"Guys..." Mike started. "I know you've talked with her and everything, but I haven't. May we get a moment alone?"
"Sure. Whatever you need." they replied.
With several pats on the back and 'I love you's they left him alone with Jade. The door closing echoed through the room. Then it was filled with an eerie silence. He took a seat in a chair that was close to Jade's bed and scooted it closer, taking her hand. He leaned over to speak to her.
"Jade... I love you so much." was all he could manage before bursting out in tears. "I don't want to loose you baby."
"I don't want to be lost." she replied.
"None of us want that to happen. We all love you. Just... Just hold on, okay? Hold on real tight and never let go." he told her. She gripped his hand tighter.
"There's so many things that we have yet to do Micheal. The wedding, raise a family, everthing."
"I promise you that you'll get better, and when you do we'll do it all."
She sniffed and looked at him thoughtfully. Her grip loosend. "Don't make promises you can't keep." she whisperd.
He swallowed hard and she blinked a tear away, gently smiling. Then her hand went limp. The heart monitor let out one long note. She was dead.
