Forever Greener, chapter 3
‘Just let it ring’, Billie continued trying to get back to what they were at. The phone kept ringing; this person obviously wasn’t going to give up. Steph felt around the bedside table for the phone. She answered it.
‘Hello…..Hello……anyone?’, she asked. She hung up.
‘Who was it?’, Billie asked as he started to kiss her again gently.
‘No one’, Steph replied, finding her way back to he’s collar. The phone rang again. This time Billie answered it. Still no-one spoke on the other line. He could hear breathing though. He kept them on the line as long as he could asking them anything he could think of getting them to talk. Eventually they hung up. Billie dropped the phone to the floor and turned back to Steph. She had fallen asleep. He to was feeling tired and drowsy. He lay down beside her, planning to get up and leave in a few minutes, but then he too fell fast asleep.
The next morning, everyone was awake, all except for Billie. Steph lay in bed for a while as she couldn’t move for the fact that Billie was half asleep on her. she gently rolled him over and got up, walking out of her room to the kitchen. Mike and Tre were already in there, fully awake, dressed and ready to go.
‘Good morning sleepy head’, Mike said as Steph took a seat at the table.
‘What time is it?’, she asked rubbing her eyes and giving a small yawn.
‘It’s 6.30 and school starts at 9 today for us’, Mike informed her.
‘Oh god we have school today’, Steph said slowly getting out of her chair and walking to the fridge.
‘What time did you get to bed?’, Tre asked, walking past her.
‘I have no idea. 1 maybe, a little later’, Steph assumed.
‘No wonder your tired. Is Billie awake?’, he asked.
‘No he’s still asleep, I might go wake him up’, she said walking out of the kitchen and back to her room.
To Steph’s surprise Billie was awake. He sat on her bed, with her phone in he’s hand.
‘Its that interesting is it?’, Steph asked, walking over to her draws to get new clothing, so she could have a shower. Billie didn’t take he’s eyes of the phone.
‘Did you read your messages and missed calls lists?’, he asked. Steph walked over to him and took her phone. ‘104 missed calls, 68 new messages. No way’, she said starting to read her messages, deleting each one as she did so. They were all the same. [they read – die sweetly–the stalker].
‘Looks like trouble’, Billie said, seriously. Steph put the phone down.
‘Its probably just a joke some-ones playing’, Steph replied, walking out of her room. Billie followed her.
‘But why would someone go to so much trouble for a joke?’, he asked, following her to the bathroom. Steph turned around and looked down the hall.
‘You seriously think its for real?’, she asked. Billie started tilting he’s head slightly. ‘Alright listen, go have your shower, and then we’ll talk to the guys about it and see if they’ve gotten any as well. Alright, now go’. Billie did as he was told and walked to his room.
After the two of them had, had their showers, gotten clean, dressed and ready for school they walked to the lounge with their bags. “Not eating?’, Mike questioned them.
‘Nah not hungry’, they said in unison. Steph showed Mike and Tre the messages.
‘Shit that’s serious’, Tre said, sitting back in he’s chair starting to think.
‘There I told you so’, Billie remarked proving he was right.
‘I still think it’s a hoax’, Steph replied, putting her phone in her bag. Mike stood up. ‘You should be careful though’, he said, ‘Someone might actually be watching you’.
‘Listen guys thanks for your concern, but its nothing. Just someone playing a joke to try and get to me’, Steph said standing up and walking for the door. The 3 of them followed her, and said nothing of the subject on the way to school. As usual Mike and Tre walked in-front and Billie and Steph, (holding hands) walked behind.
‘Are you going to see your mum today?’, Steph asked Billie, hoping that the other subject had been forgotten about,
‘Yeah, I might. I wanna see that’s she’s alright’, he told her. ‘You gonna come?’.
‘I cant, I’ve got horseriding tonight. It’s been cancel for the last few weeks cos of the weather and now I cant miss out my lesson’, she said as they walked into the school. ‘But I promise to come to one of the band practises when there on’, she finished.
‘You promise?’, Billie questioned her as they stood at the steps of the school before they had to part for classes.
‘Yeah I promise you’, Steph told him, giving him a small kiss, and hugging Mike goodbye before she and Tre walked over to the science labs. Billie called Tre back as the two started walking. Steph patiently waited, while they spoke about something.
‘Keep her under your watch today. I don’t want anything happening to her’, Billie told Tre.
‘Yeah, mate of course’, Tre replied, walking back to Steph.
‘What was that about?’, Steph asked hoping for an answer. Tre looked down at her bitting he’s lip.
‘Nothing, he was just telling me about band’, Tre lied, hoping Steph wouldn’t go any deeper into the convocation. The two of them continued walking.
On the other side of the school, Mike and Billie were walking to the library.
‘I hope she’s alright’, Billie kept muttering to himself over and over.
‘Bill she will be, she’s capable of taking care of herself, nothings going to happen’, Mike assured him.
‘But what if it does Mikey? What if something happens to her?’, Billie asked frustratingly.
‘Billie, she’s going to be fine. Don’t worry yourself about it. If Steph’s fine with it, its gotta be alright’, Mike said walking into someone. ‘Sorry mate’.
The boy grabbed Mike by he’s collar and pushed him up against the wall. ‘You should be’, he told Mike.
‘Josh, just leave him alone, he hasn’t done anything wrong’, Billie said, grabbing Mike by the hand and pulling him along.
‘And just where do you think your going?’, Josh asked Billie. The group cornered him and started to question him.
‘To the library. Where else?’, Billie said quietly.
‘I don’t know maybe to see your girlfriend. The girl who everyone likes that you took away’, Josh continued. ‘Don’t bring Steph into the subject’, Billie replied, starting to become protective.
‘Ohhh, what so I’m not allowed to mention her. Why? Have you done something?’, Josh joked. The rest of his gang started laughing to.
‘Well I wouldn’t be surprised if I see her today, hanging off of Tre. You know how close those to are together. Come on Billie, you know she’s only using you to get closer to him’, Josh said, starting to mess around with Billie’s mind. Once they saw a teacher coming, they slowly backed off warning Billie and Mike of bad things about to happen.
‘Billie, don’t listen to him. He’s a jerk, he always has been a jerk and he always will be’, Mike told his friend ‘And the whole Tre and Steph thing, he’s just trying to get to you, why else would be bring it up’.
‘Yeah I guess, maybe we should go see how she is?’, Billie said nervously. Mike stopped him before he started to turn back.
‘If you go see her, firstly Tre’s not going to think you trust him, being with your girl and secondly Steph’s going to be questioning you about why your so worried about her’, Mike told him.
‘Yeah I guess’, Billie said, putting he’s bag down at a desk ‘Fine then, just come find them with me at lunch’, he finished. Mike nodded and they set them selves to study…..
