The Rage and Love, Story of my Life, chapter 18

Billie walked into the kitchen, Jakob in his arms. I was grabbing a mixing bowl from the cupboard and gathering all the ingredients needed to make the meal. I had just begun mixing when I heard footsteps walk through the door. I turned around and saw Joey taking a seat at the table next to Billie and Jakob.

"Morning honey, want some pancakes?"

"Yes, please. Dad, are you gonna stay home today?" Joey asked.

"Yup. Was there something you wanted to do today?" Billie asked.

Joey shrugged. "No. I was just wondering."

"Oh... okay." Billie Joe replied.

"Okay, how many do you want, guys? They're almost done." I asked, flipping over a pancake.

"2." Jakob and Joey responded in unison.

"I'll have three." Billie said.

I grabbed 4 plates from the cupboard and placed 2 pancakes on each plate. I walked over to the table, setting a plate in front of Joey, Billie, and Jake, then in front of my empty chair. I took a seat, waiting for Jakob to finish pouring his syrup.

Billie looked at me. "Uh.. Adie, I asked for 3."

"You weren't THAT good last night." I smiled, taking the syrup from Joey and pouring it over my stack of pancakes.

Billie glared at me, then stuffed a forkful in his mouth.

"Daddy, when we're done, can we play Halo 2?" Jakob asked, a trace of butter already smeared across his left cheek.

"Sure." Billie Joe responded.

"Mommy, you can play too." Jakob added.

"Oh honey, maybe next time. I have to clean up the kitchen."

Jakob nodded. "Is Uncle Tre and Uncle Mike gonna come over today?"

"Um, I don't think so." answered Billie.

"Sweetie, maybe you should stop asking questions and eat your pancakes. You don't want them getting cold." I said.

"Okay." He responded.

20 minutes later, the boys had adjourned to Joey's room, while I was downstairs clearing the table and washing the dishes. I was just about done, when I heard the phone ring. I sighed, then walked over to the phone, lifting it from the receiver.

"Hello?"

"Hi Mrs. Armstrong, is Joey there?"

"Sure, one second Samantha."

I pulled the phone away from my mouth and held it to my chest, "JOEY! Phone's for you!"

I waited till I heard him pick up the other phone till I hung it up. I placed the last dish away, then turned off the light. I was walking out of the kitchen to the stairs when I heard Jakob calling my name.

"Coming!" I called back.

I reached Joey's bedroom and saw both Jake and Billie sitting on the floor, inches away from the TV.

"Mom, can you play Halo with us? Dad sucks and Joey's on the phone."

"What?! I don't suck!" protested Billie.

"Dad, you've died 13 times and we've only been playing for 8 minutes."

I chuckled. "Sure Jake, give me Joe's controller." I said taking a seat on the bed.

Jakob reached forward and handed me the controller. We continued to play for about half an hour.

"Dad! Shoot at the bad guys!" Jakob yelled.

"I'm trying! I can't keep the freakin camera straight! Why do they make it so you have to control where you walk and the camera!?"

Jakob rolled his eyes. "Mom's killed 23 more aliens than you."

"I don't want to play anymore!" Billie yelled, standing up and throwing the controller on the bed.

"Aw, Billie c'mon! Don't be such a baby!" I replied.

"No! This game sucks! Why can't we play something easier?"

"This is easy! You just suck!" Jakob responded.

I laughed. "Jakey, be nice to your father."

Jakob pouted. "Okay, okay."

"I'm gonna go watch TV. I'm sick of this game." Billie said, exiting the room.

"Alright." I responded.

Jakob and I continued our game for about an hour longer. I decided to go see what Billie was watching, so I stood up from the bed.

"Okay, Jake. I'm gonna go downstairs."

"Okay, Mommy. Thanks for playing with me."

"No problem, hun." I said patting his head, then emerging from the room.

I walked downstairs into the living room and spotted Billie on the couch watching TV, with a beer in hand.

"Hey babe, whatcha watching?" I asked, taking a seat next to him.

"I dunno. Just flipping channels. Did you win Jakob?"

"Win? We were on the same team the whole time."

"We were? .... Oh."

I rolled my eyes. "Idiot."

"That's American Idiot!"

"Okay, don't break out in song."

Billie smiled. He wrapped his arm around me as I leaned against his shoulder. We were just settling in and getting interested in an episode of Will & Grace, when Joey came into the room.

"Uh... Dad? Can I talk to you for a minute?"

"Aw man. Right now? I'm watching TV, Joe."

"Okay." said Joey, lowering his head and beginning to leave the room.

"No Joey, come back!" I called after him.

I jabbed Billie in the side. "Go talk to him."

"Adie, on a commercial."

I gave him a stern look. He quickly began to stand up.

"Alright, alright."

I gave a victorious smile, then stretched my legs on the couch. I heard Billie and Joey sit at the kitchen table, which was next door to the living room. I didn't want to eavesdrop, but couldn't seem to stop myself from doing so. I listened intentively, waiting for their conversation to begin. The first few words I heard, came from Joey.

"I really like Samantha, but I don't know how to ask her out. What should I do?"
