Murder has Secrets, chapter 5

Chapter 5

Twenty-five minutes later a knock came at my door.
"Come in," I say.
A man around twenty-four years old steps into my office holding two cups of coffee.
"Sorry I'm late," he says, "I stopped and got some coffee on the way over." He hands me a cup and sits down opposite me. A bit forward for my liking.
"And you are?" I ask.
"Oh! Sorry Detective Tudor. I'm Daniel Fitzgerald your trainee." He offers his hand and I shake it. I lean back in my chair and take him in. Tall, even when he's sitting; around 6'4". Short, mousy brown hair, emerald green eyes, and a stubborn chin. A trainee. Not a partner, not a baby that must be watched, but a trainee. This could work.

"So Daniel," I say when I finish my coffee, "I expect that you are easy to work with, will obey the rules of this job, and if you don't understand something please ask. Being a detective requires a keen eye, patience, and a hell of a lot of brain power."
"Of course Detective Tudor, you have my word. I won't let you down."
"Good. You start tomorrow at 9 o'clock, be at my office on the dot." as he gets up to leave I add, "and Daniel? No more 'Detective Tudor' ok? Call me Scarlett, everyone else does."
He smiles and walks out of my office.

At 9 o'clock the next morning there comes a knock on my door and Daniel steps in.
"Right on time," I say. "Today you'll be starting work. Follow me." I lead him out of my office and down the hall to a research room.
Daniel sits down at a computer and looks up at me.
"What am I supposed to be doing?"
"You are going to be taking this," I hand him a clear bag containing the bullet found in Billies' body, "and you're going to I.D. it, the gun it came from, and the person it's registered to."
"That's all?"
"That's all. Have fun!" I say sarcastically before heading back to my office to enjoy the benefits of having someone to do my work for me.

Fifteen minutes later my phone rings. It's Daniel.
"Having trouble?" I ask.
"No, not at all. It's just that I've found a match."
I'm silent for a moment, amazed. Even for an experienced detective it usually takes more than an hour to I.D. a bullet.
"Wow, Daniel... great work. If you could just meet me by the elevator in five minutes with your information that would be great."
"Okay. See you there."
