But the next morning.......at about 3 am, actually, Billie Joe's mattress deflated. He had been tossing and turning so much that the bed scooted over a few inches and landed on the business end of a pair of scissors that had fallen on the floor a few hours previous, and the air mattress lost it's air quicker than a popped balloon on steroids (if it's even possible for a balloon to be on steroids). Needless to say he woke up almost instantly.
He didn't want to wake Skyler in the name of new sleeping arrangements, so Billie just sat there for about a half hour thinking about what was going on in his life. He thought about his friends, Sweet Children, his very recent break up, and then he thought about Skyler. He thought about how beautiful she was, how she was now one of his best friends, how he loved her laugh, about the feeling she gave him in the pit of his stomach, and he thought a lot about how Mike and Tre had said she liked him too.
As he was wrapped up in thought, Skyler woke for no reason. She sat up to find Billie Joe sitting on the deflated mattress next to a suspicious pair of scissors, staring into space, and put two and two together. Her giggle made Billie snap out of his daze.
"Hey," he said sweetly, "what are you doing awake?"
"I don't know really, but I can see why you're awake." She replied and giggled again.
"Yeah, well, it happens."
Without another word, the blue-eyed blonde slid over in her bed and sleepily patted the spot next to her. Billie Joe gladly got up from the deceased mattress and crawled into bed next to his friend, and crush. The two fell asleep immediately.
9 AM
Billie Joe was the first to wake up. He opened his eyes to find Skyler sound asleep with her head resting contentedly on his chest. He smiled and closed his eyes again, not wanting to ruin the moment. A few minutes later Skyler woke up from a nightmare. Her eyes flew open and she sat up quickly.
"What's wrong, Sky?"
"I-I just had the most horrible dream..." she said slightly dazed.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Billie asked.
"It was about my mom....she got hurt really bad....and she....Billie, I'm really worried about her," Skyler confessed.
He could tell she was really serious about this. "See if she's home first. If not, we can call the hospital and see if she's there or if they know where she went. How does that sound?"
"Okay. I'll be right back." Skyler got up and crossed the room to her door. She turned around suddenly. "Billie, will you come with me? I'm a little scared of what I may find."
"Of course."
The two left Skyler's room and walked down the hallway to her mom's room. Skyler opened the door slowly....nothing. She went inside and looked around. No one there. They checked all the upstairs rooms, and came out empty handed. So they headed downstairs. Nothing downstairs either. Skyler started to panic.
"Hey, hey now. It's ok, we're gonna call the hospital now, ok?"
"Alright," she sniffled. Picking up the receiver cautiously, she dialed the number and waited for someone on the other end to pick up. The phone rang a ridiculously long time before Sheena, Skyler's mom's friend, picked up.
"Hello, East Bay Regional Hospital, how may I help you?"
Skyler recognized the voice instantly. "Hey! My favorite receptionist! It's Skyler, have you seen my mom around?"
"No sweetie, she clocked out around 5 am. Why, you can't find her?"
"No, I can't and I'm kinda worried, so I thought I'd try here first."
"Well, she's not here, but I'm sure she'll get home any minute, so don't you worry about anything, alright?" That wasn't really possible, but Sheena was just trying to make her feel better.
"Okay Sheena, thanks. I'll talk to you later, bye." She hung up. "She isn't there Billie, and they don't know where she went.....what if something happened to her?"
"Don't worry about it, Sky. I'm sure she's fine," he said, though he wasn't really sure himself that Skyler's mom was okay.
12pm
The two had called around to a bunch of Skyler's mom's friends and even a few restaurants and stores. No luck. They were sitting on the couch, watching TV, trying not to think what might happen to Skyler's mom, when they got a phone call.
"Hello, Skyler Brink?"
"Yeah, that's me," she said nervously into the receiver.
"This is agent Travis Elliot. I'm going to need you to come down to the police station. I've got some news for you, but I think it would be better for you to hear it in person."
"A-alright...sure. I'll b-be there as soon as I c-can." she managed. She knew something bad had happened. She hung up and turned to Billie.
"We need to go to the police station."
"Okay." Billie knew what might be coming, too, and didn't want to say it.
At the station
"Well, Miss Brink. I have some bad news for you." Agent Elliot said, "about your mom."
A few tears snuck down Skyler's face. The man continued.
"At about 10:30 AM this morning, your mother was found behind a Denny's. She was robbed and then...." the detective cursed under his breath about saying this to a kid, "and then she was murdered, shot in the head. I am so sorry, miss."
But his attempt at comfort did not help one bit. Skyler immediately burst into convulsive sobs and collapsed into Billie's arms. He held her there, in the middle of the police station, for about 20 minutes until she final settled down a little. Agent Elliot had left, but would call later that day to talk straighten things out. For now, Billie took Skyler home and sat with her for hours as she cried and talked and cried more. They both knew that they had forgotten all about school that day, but that was unimportant. All that mattered to the two at that moment was the days events. And the only person that really mattered to Skyler now was Billie Joe, because he was all she had.
