The Beginning Of A Long and Lonely Road, chapter 1
"Hey, break it up, break it up," Billie Joe said as he tried to stop a brawl that his two band mates were having. Billie Joe could see that Mike and Tre were trowing punches at each other, so Billie Joe decided to stand in between the two and block them from hitting each other. As he stood between Mike and Tre, both looking very pissed at each other, Billie Joe asked them "Now why the fuck are you two fighing like this? Seriously, tell me right the fuck now."
"You really wanna know?" Mike asked, "Okay, here's what happened." Mike started to tell Billie Joe his story, "So me and Tre were watching this movie "Ghost Ship", right, and there was this scene where this dude starts talking to the ghost of the ship's captain. When I first saw the ghost, I jumped up just a little bit, you know, freaked out just a little bit. Well after I got a little spooked," Mike continued, "this asshole right here," pointing a finger at Tre, "said that I shouldn't be such a little pussy."
"Well he was being a little pussy," Tre said to Billie Joe.
"It was a scary movie," Mike argued.
"Yeah, a lame ass scary movie. That movie was like the fuckin lame-assed movie I've ever seen," Tre said to Mike.
"You know what dude? Fuck you," Mike yelled at Tre in retaliation.
"Hey don't get mad at me just because you can't handle a lame ass horror flick, you fuckin pussy" Tre yelled back at Mike.
"You know what, that's it," Mike said as he took a swing with his right hand at Tre's face. Mike missed, but that attempt at hurting Tre sent Tre off as well, and the brawl once again started up.
"Hey, hey, hey! Now that's enough God damnit," fed up Billie Joe said to Mike and Tre, attempting to calm the two down. "Mike, finish your story," Billie Joe said.
"Thanks," Mike said to Billie Joe, "as I was saying, after Tre called me a pussy,"Mike continued,"I said 'dude, don't call me a pussy', and he said," pointing a Tre again," 'dude, if you don't act like one, I won't call you it.'"
"Then I asked," Mike continued, " 'Like you've never gotten scared by a horror flick in your life?' Then he said," Mike said, reffering to Tre, "'No, I haven't,'like a smartass."
"Now it's my turn to tell some of this story," Tre exclaimed. "So here's what happedned next," Tre started, "Mike was startin to get in face, so I'm like 'dude, get the fuck out of my face,' and he's like 'I'm not in your fuckin ass face, dude,'" Tre said, making fun of what Mike said by saying it in a high pitched, very gay manner.
"You know what dude, that's your biggest fuckin problem," Mike said in retalliation to what Tre said, "your always making fun or making jokes." "Every body loves a joke, but no one loves a fool, jackass!," Mike continued.
"Hey, that was a good line," Billie Joe said to Mike.
"Thanks dude," Mike said to Billie Joe, "but anyway," Mike continued, "yeah Tre, that's your biggest problem. You're always making jokes." "That's why you're the least popular member of the fuckin band and why Claudia left you."
"Not cool dude, not fuckin cool," Tre said as he stormed out of Mike's house, looking very hurt.
"Mike, what's your problem?," Billie Joe said to Mike, "you know that Tre's divorce is a subjuct we don't discuss."
"Sorry, Billie, I guess I was so mad I just sortda forgot. Sometimes Tre can just piss me off so fuckin much" Mike said.
"Well, I'm gona go after him," Billie Joe said, "Tre's in a fragile state, and might need someone to talk to."
"Well, how do you expect to find him?" Mike asked. "You don't know where he's even going," Mike said.
"Where does Tre always go when he's upset?," Billie Joe asked Mike,"come on Mike, we both know know." "
Right," Mike answered, "back to his house to drown his sorrows in cheech's."
With that, Billie Joe and Mike hopped into Billie Joe's BMW and drove off after Tre. Within ten minutes, the two arrived to Tre's empty house.
"Guess he's not home," Mike said.
"Guess not," Billie Joe agreed. "But where could he be?" Billie Joe questioned, "I mean, he always comes home and drowns his sorrows in cheech's when he's upset."
"Let's not worry about it," Mike said. "Let's just go home and talk to Tre tomorrow." "I'm sure he'll be fine," Mike continued.
"Yeah your probably right, Mike," Billie Joe said.
After Billie Joe dropped Mike back off at Mike's house, Billie Joe went home. As he went in his house, Billie Joe could here Adie, his wife, talking on the phone. It was late, and his two sons Joey and Jakob had been fast asleep for a long time. Adie was in the kitchen. Billie Joe walked into the kitchen, walked up to Adie and began to hug her from behind. As Billie Joe started kissing the back of his wife's neck, Adie pushed Billie Joe away. Billie Joe noticed that she looked very distraught and tears welling up in her eyes. As soon as Billie Joe noticed these things, the converstion was over, and Adie quickly hung up the phone.
"Billie," Adie started, "you need to get down to the hostpital, now. It's Tre. There's been an accident."
"What?" Billie Joe said suprised and confused. "What happened?" he asked Adie.
"I don't know," she answered her husband, "I just got a call from Claudia. I guess she was the first one on the call in case of emergancy sheet. She already called Mike"
With those last words from Adie, Billie Joe was out the door and on his was to the hospital.
"Oh shit, oh god no. This can't be happening; this is all my fault" Billie Joe kept thinking as he sped along to the hospital. As Billie Joe walked to the front desk of the hospital's waiting room, he noticed how dull and lifeless the atmosphere of the waiting room was, and that made him feel unsettled. "What room is Frank Wright in please" Billie Joe asked the nurse at the front desk.
"Right down that hall to your left, sweety," the nurse answered," room 117."
"Thanks," Billie Joe said to the nurse.
As Billie Joe walked into Tre's room, Billie could see Tre's ex-wife Claudia, and Tre's parents and sisters.
Mike was there too, standing next to the window muttering to himself "It was my fault. It was my fault."
The doctor was also there, standing by Tre's bedside, trying to comfort Tre's mother.
Billie Joe walked up to the doctor and asked "how is he doc?"
The doctor began to tell Billie Joe the whole story.
"Frank sustained severe internal injuries from his accident."
"Well how bad was the accident?" Billie Joe asked. "
"The car was crushed to approximently one quarter its original size after the accident, Mr. Armstrong." the doctor answered.
"Oh god, no!" Billie Joe screamed in a hoarse tone of voice, tears welling up in his eyes.
"I'm sorry to have to tell you this son," the doctor started to tell Billie Joe, "but I'm afraid we cannot stop Frank's internal bleeding."
"Well, doc, how long does Tre got?" Billie Joe asked.
"It pains me to tell you this, but probably only till five or six of this morning," the doctor told Billie Joe.
Billie Joe could tell tears were welling up in his own eyes, and starting to run down his cheeks. Billie Joe just couldn't believe what he was hearing. The clock said two fifty five already. Billie Joe couldn't believe that this would be the last two or three hours left to see his pal forever. Billie Joe was having trouble comprehending all of this. He went to the wall on the other side of the room. Billie Joe stood next to Claudia, who had tears streaming down her face.
"I appreciate you guys being here, you know, you and Mike," she said to Billie Joe.
"How did the accident happen?" Billie Joe asked .
"Tre has been clinically depressed for a long time. Our divorce really had a bad effect on him, really made his depression worse" Claudia started to explain. "What Mike said to him must of really made Tre go off the deep end. All I know is that Tre tried to run his car full speed into the concrete wall of the center divider of the freeway in an attempt to kill himself," Claudia explained to Billie Joe.
At that point Billie Joe started to cry.
"Why wasn't I there for him, why," Billie Joe said as he cried, " I should have been a better friend to him."
"No Billie, no, it wasn't you who was the crummy friend to Tre," Mike interrupted him, "It was me who was the awful friend, the one who caused Tre to kill himself, and I will never forgive myself for it ." Now Mike started to cry too.
Two hours went past quicker than any two had ever gone before them. As the clock showed four fifty five, Tre awoke from the sleep he had been in. Billie Joe and Mike had been up the whole time, waiting for Tre to wake up.
"Hey guys,"Tre said to Mike and Billie Joe in a voice that was barely a wisper.
"Hey buddy," Billie Joe said to Tre, trying to be as upbeat about the situation as he possibly could. "Yeah, hey bud," Mike said to him weakly, to sad and guilty to really talk to Tre.
"So the doctors say I don't have long, eh?" Tre asked his friends.
"No, don't say things like that ," Billi Joe asked Tre, "Please don't say things like that."
"It's okay, Billie Joe, I actually think I'm ready to go," Tre said to him.
"No, Please don't say things like that Tre, please don't say things like that," crying Billie Joe pleaded to the dying drummer.
With those last few words form Billie Joe, Tre turned his head and looked up towards the cealing. After about two seconds, Tre stopped blinking, and then his whole body seemed to sink ever so slightly into the hospital bed. Tre's heartbeat monitor showed no beats at all, just a sraight line. Th machine was making a beeping noise too, but Billie Joe, or MIke, could hear it because the both of them were crying far too loud. With that, the drummer for a whole generation of society was gone. Mike stromed out of the room.
"How could I have done this to him, how can I live with myself now?" Mike said to himself as he climbed the stairs to the roof of the hospital.
Mike Walked to the edge of the hospital's roof, and said
"I don't have to live with myself," and immediately jumped off, or sould I say, Fell forward with his arm out to his sides, looking sort of like Jesus on the cross, off of the hospital roof. At that same moment, Billie Joe Armstrong was looking out the window of the hospital room that had once been his good friends room. Suddenly, he saw the figure of a man, a man with blonde, spikey hair and wearing a white wife beater, falling to the ground 3 stories below him. Billie Joe rushed to the window, fully knowing what he was about to see. There, on the ground, dead, and lying in his own pool of blood was Michael Pritchard, the Bassist for Green Day, and the best friend of Billie Joe Armstrong. That day was the day in which Billie Joe Armstrong's life turned ugly, that the life he knew ended. That day was the day when Billie Joe Armstrong started on the lonely road of no return.
"You really wanna know?" Mike asked, "Okay, here's what happened." Mike started to tell Billie Joe his story, "So me and Tre were watching this movie "Ghost Ship", right, and there was this scene where this dude starts talking to the ghost of the ship's captain.
