The Innocent Can Never Last., chapter 3

Chapter 8.

Helena stood there in the middle of the cafe, dumbstruck and wrapped in Billie's arms. Adrienne stormed out the door, looking angry and swearing under her breath. Helena felt so happy, but yet so bad about herself, what had she done? She had fallen in love with a married man. She was in love, she could not tell him that yet, but she was.
"Helena? Do you need a ride?"
Helena nodded, "Yeah, thanks..."

The two of them pulled into Helena's driveway some ten minutes later. Helena stepped out of the car:
"Billie?"
He smiled, "Yeah?"
"Did you mean what you said?"
"Yes," He sighed, "Actually I did."
She shut the door, then walked inside her house. Mathew was no where to be found. But a note was taped to the door:

"Mom, it's Matt, I had to go, I'm at Gavin's."

Helena sighed, -two notes in one day- she thought, then laughed at her own stupidity. She sat down on her couch, and began flipping through the channels quickly. The phone rang, she jumped slightly, then answered:
"Hello?"
"Hello Miss Lee, It's Gavin's mother. I NEED you down here now!"
There was a note of distress in her voice.
"Why? Where are you? What's going on?"
"Gavin and Matt, they're at the hospital!"
"What the fuck happened?"
"I'm not sure, a policeman just rang me, he says they were caught in a drug-bust!"
Helena seemed oddly unfazed, as long as Matt was okay, he could take a few beatings.
"Okay, I'll be right there!"
Helena grabbed her keys, and ran out the door. When she noticed, her truck was still in the parking lot.
"Shit!" She yelled, causing a neighbor to stare strangely.
She began sprinting down her beaten road, some where in east Oakland. She new she could not make it to the hospital, but maybe she could make it to Gavin's house.
She ran as fast as she could, then knocked on the door.
A teenage girl answered the door, "Hello?"
"Hi, is your mom home?"
"No, she left to go to the hospital... why?"
"I'm Matt's mom!"
The meek, red-headed girl smiled, "Oh, you want a ride to the hospital?"
"Yes! Thank you!"

Helena got into the girl's red car.
"I'm Melinda, by the way..."
Helena smiled, "Helena, nice to meet you Melinda."
"I knew I stayed home for a reason, you know, instead of going to the hospital..."
"Yeah... Do you know what happened?"
"Yup, Gavin and Matt were at some high school party, there was a drug-bust for pot, and they both got beaten up pretty bad..."
"Oh."
"You seem oddly unfazed?"
"Oh, I care, it's just that I have got a lot on my mind right now."
"Oh, I can tell, guy?"
Helena sighed, "Yeah, a guy..."
"Oh well, don't let him get the best of you, after all, he's just a guy, it's not like he's a movie star or something!"
Helena faked a laugh, "No... He's not a movie star..."
As that was said, they pulled into the hospital parking lot.

Chapter 9.

Helena ran down hall, towards her son's hospital room. Melinda had stayed in the waiting room. Helena sped past a number of nurses, techs and med-aids.
She finally found it, room 504. She threw open the door. Only to find Mathew, laying upright in bed, looking perfectly normal, except for the black eyes.
"Matt!"
She threw her arms around her son, "Oh, Matt you're okay!"
"Yeah, I'm fine, my second beating in a week though,"
She laughed, "How's Gavin?"
"I don't know, I haven't seen him."
Then, all of a sudden, Melinda came rushing into the room, "Matt! Gavin... Hurt... Hurry..."
Mathew got out of bed, him and Helena sped down the hall towards Gavin's room. There was Gavin, a young, skinny boy with mousy brown hair in his face. Laying asleep in a hospital bed. Matt rushed to his side, Helena saw Gavin's mother, a tall, older woman, standing next to the bed crying. Mathew crouched down beside the bed, "Hey buddy, can you hear me?"
Helena looked at Gavin's mother, "What happened?"
The woman whipped tears from her brown eyes, "He's hurt, bad... Something terrifying happened. Some teenage kid at that stupid party, hit him with a baseball bat!"
Helena gasped, "What? Why?"
She cried, "I don't know, but there's something wrong..."
Just then, a nurse walked into the room, and looked at Helena, "I'm sorry, anyone who is not family must go, strict visiting hours!"
Helena put her arm around her son, who was crying hard, and they walked out of the room.
The two sat down in the waiting room, Melinda hurried after them.
"Helena! I'll take you home!"
They stood up, Melinda looked out of breath, and her eyes were tearstained.
"It's okay, you need to be with your little brother," Said Helena.
"No, no, I need to get you two home..."

They walked into the now dark, parking lot. The three of them got into Melinda's car. Mathew sat in the backseat, trying his hardest not to cry.
Melinda tried to cheer him up, "Has anyone ever told you look just like your mother?"
He laughed sarcastically, "No, do you really think I give a hell right now?"
"Sorry..."
Helena was in her own world, she had way too many thoughts in her head right now, not only about Billie, but now Gavin.

Chapter 10.

Helena awoke the next morning, it was the first morning in the past two that she had woken up in her bed, rather than her living room furniture. She pushed away the covers and walked towards her closet. She quickly got dressed and walked down the hall.
She knocked on Mathew's door, "Matt, you 'kay?"
"Leave me alone!"
Helena shook her head and walked towards her kitchen. As she walked by, she punched play on her answering machine.
"-You have two messages-"
She got a beer out of the fridge as the first message played.
"Helena, it's Sarah, Gavin's mom, the nurse just called me. She says that Gavin might have to stay for a week or two, they'll be running some tests, but they think that his scull was cracked. Anyway, please give me a call, thanks."

"Helena? It's Billie, again, I just thought I'd call to check up on you. Anyway, I'll be at the cafe at twelve, if maybe you wanted to meet me there, or whatever, bye."

"-End of messages-"

Helena smiled, she was day-dreaming again, then she glanced at the wall clock.
It was 11:45.
"Oh shit!"
Helena rushed out of the door.
About ten minutes later, she arrived at the cafe. She ran through the doors, she was so excited about seeing him again. She slowly passed the booths of people, trying to spot Billie.
But then, her heart leapt, she felt like she was going to be sick.
There was Billie, seated in the same booth as last time, setting aside from Adrienne...
Helena walked towards them, "Billie!"
Billie sighed, "Not again..."
Adrienne stood up, "Who the fuck are you, are you stalking us or something?"
"No, I'm not stalking you! Billie, you said you wanted to meet me here!"
He crossed his arms, "Helena, it's not what it looks like. I simply wanted to meet her here..."
Adrienne cut him off, "Yes, you're divorcing me! And I'm assuming it's because of this bitch right here!"
She pushed Helena, then stormed out the swinging cafe doors.
Billie sat back down, "Helena, please set down."
Helena took a seat across from Billie.
"Why did you want me here? If all you were doing was having brunch with your wife!"
"...You mean my EX wife."
Helena was confused, "What do you mean?"
"I'm divorcing her, Helena, I told you, I love YOU."
"No you don't! You only had sex with me because you were probably trying to get back at her!"
"No! That's not true! Helena, I love you!"
A few waitresses were starring at this point.
Billie grabbed Helena's hand, "I love you..."
"I... I... I love you too..."
He looked at her very deeply, "What now?"
