Words I might have ate, chapter 3

Walking home all Billie Joe could think about was how helpless Evan had looked slumped down in that corner.
"I'm fucking fine Mike put me down!" Evan yelled as Mike made his way home carrying her with him.
"No, you're not EC. How could you do that shit!" Mike said angrily.
"It's not that big of a deal!" Evan said as Mike readjusted her weight.
Mike stopped and set her down. "Not that big of a deal EC? You could have died! Do you know how dangerous that shit is?!" He yelled.
"Whatever Mike! You just don't get it!" Evan yelled as her legs gave out from underneath her and she started to cry.
"Evan... " Mike said softly as he kneeled down beside her.
"He's cheating on me Mike... after everything. He's cheating on me. And I know it, but... but I still care about him. Mikey how could he do that to me? I gave him everything... Everything!" Evan sobbed into Mike's shoulder.
"He's cheating on you? Oh Evan... " Mike said holding her tighter, " Listen, I'll always be your big brother and I'll always watch over you, but I'm not going to intervene with your relationships. I don't know the whole story here and right now you're in no shape to explain, so lets go home and get you to bed and we'll talk tomorrow morning, okay? You never know this could all be a big mistake." Mike said comfortingly.
Evan nodded, " Okay, but Mike. I need to tell you something now... ." Evan said pulling away. Mike nodded, " Okay."
"I... I... thought I loved him, but I think I'm falling for someone else... .And at the same time... I'm so scared to lose him." Evan said as tears continued to streak down her face.
By the time Mike got home with Evan in his arms she was past out cold. Walking in he saw Tre sitting on the couch with his head in his hands. After putting Evan to bed Mike padded quietly back downstairs.
"Tre, hey man what's up?" Mike said sitting down on the couch beside Tre.
"I cheated on her Mike. I cheated on the girl I think I'm in love with." Tre said looking up. His eyes we red and puffy from tears that seemed to had subsided.
"And she knows... " Mike said quietly.
"Yeah, I know. She heard me. Those girls she was with when we found her went off on me about what a low-life I was for doing that to her after all this time. Even if I could barely make out everything they were saying what I did catch hit home. I mean Mike, lately I've been so mean... so mean... and she's put up with it. She's the sweetest person I know and I'm dragging her through the dirt. I feel so shitty. And now, I've really done it. I was drunk and... . I've been drinking too much lately. I've been trying to push Evan into things she doesn't want to do. Mike I've been trying to push her into fucking, throwing fits when she says no, and she still makes sure I'm okay and she still puts me to bed. Then, after all of that I cheat on her? What kind of jerk am I?" Tre said as the tears started to fall again.
"Tre you're not a jerk, you just need to talk to Evan. Tell her everything you just told me, I'm sure she'll give you a second chance. You guys used to be together all the time and every time I saw you two you were always making each other laugh. That's why everyone agreed that you guys were so perfect for each other. Somewhere you and EC forgot that, maybe you just need to start talking again. But before you even try you need to sort everything out in your head." Mike said as he watch the tears stream down Tre's face as he smiled at the memories.
"But Mike, I promised I would never hurt her or make her cry. And she promised she would never do anything to hurt herself or me. You remember how she used to be... Neither of us broke those promises until tonight. I know that's why she did that Mike I know it was. She did it because she knew it would scare me. She did it to get back at me. Mikey, what if something would have happened? What if she would have done worse? It would have all been my fault. I don't think I can live without her Mike. What am I going to do if she leaves me?" Tre said putting his head into his hands once more.
"Well, Tre... I guess you'll just have to get her back if she leaves you. Now, I think we've all had a really hard night so lets get to bed and sleep on all this. Tomorrow's a new day for everyone. So tonight will give everyone time to relax a bit before all the drama that's bound to happen tomorrow." Mike replied standing up and offering a hand to Tre.
Tre nodded as he took Mike's hand to pull himself up, "Thanks Mike, and I'm sorry for doing this to Evan."
"Just... promise not to hurt her anymore." Mike said patting Tre on the back.

The next day Evan woke up slowly, rolling over she noticed she was all alone. 'Where's Tre? He never wakes up before I do.' She thought as she sat up, suddenly hit by the most killer migraine ever. "CHRIST!" Evan yelled as she fell back onto her pillow. Rolling over on her side Evan squinted to see a small envelope lying on the bedside table. Slowly she reached over and grabbed it. "Evan" it read across the front. 'That's weird.' Evan thought as she opened it.

"Hey Sweets,
We need to talk about last night. I'm so sorry. I have somethings I need to tell you and I know I have a lot to explain. You mean the world to me and just please give me a chance to make it up to you. I swear on my life I will never do that to you again. I know I broke my promise and you did too, but please lets talk about it and try to fix everything. Evan, I want to be able to look at you and you look at me like we did when we first got into this. Please Evan.
-Tre"
As she read, Evan felt the tears well up in her eyes as she remembered some of the events of last night. She couldn't quite remember all of it but she remembered getting Tre's drumsticks. She remembered spinning a cup on the floor. She remembered crying... why was she crying? Evan tried to think, then it hit her, and No wonder he was being so sweet he had cheated on her! Her headache didn't even seem to exist as Evan flew down the stairs barefooted and in her pajamas.
"Where's Tre?!" Evan almost yelled as she saw Billie Joe sitting on the couch.
Billie Joe jumped as he turned around to see and angry Evan glaring his way, "He's, um, He went into town, but I think I just heard his car pull in. Why what's the matter?" he said.
Without answering Evan ran out the door only to meet Tre halfway up the drive.
"How could you do that to me you selfish inconsiderate conceded lying bastard! I trusted you with my life! I did everything for you! And no matter how mean you were when you were fucked up I still took care of you! How could you fucking do this to me?!" Evan screamed as she watched Tre's expression change from happy to sad to ashamed.
"I'm sorry Evan... " Tre said quietly looking at the ground.
"No! Don't fucking sorry me Tre! I've never broken a promise to you in my life! And you broke the biggest promise you've ever made to me!" Evan yelled as she grabbed Tre's jacket and shoved him with every other word. Her voice breaking and tears starting to fall one by one. "How could you do this to me Tre?" Evan said, as her shoves became weaker. Tre had looked up; staring into Evan's teary eyes was almost unbearable. The happiness that was once there was gone and now replaced by a mixture of hate and sadness. "I'm sorry Evan... " Tre said as he watched the tears come faster and faster. "Sorry isn't good enough Tre... I thought I loved you. I thought I wanted to be with you forever. I thought you were the one Tre! I thought you were the one... I wanted to marry you and have kids, but stupid things like that don't matter do they Tre!" Evan said now sobbing. "Evan... please," Tre started. "No!" Evan yelled burying her face into his shoulder. Tilting her head to one side Evan continued," No... Everybody wants to date a rock star, right Tre? But I was there before all of it. But I'm just not good enough! Is that it Tre?! I'm just boring old Evan who cares about stupid things like racing home everyday from work to make sure I don't miss your band practice and taking off early on Fridays to help you guys set up for shows or spending every waking minute of every fucking day loving someone who apparently could give a damn about me! Yep that's just part of my boring pathetic life, right Tre!" Evan yelled pushing herself off of Tre. " It's not fair Tre. It's not fair." Evan said shaking her head as she backed away.
"Evan please, please just... at least listen to what I have to say." Tre said, his voice breaking and his eyes welled up with tears. Evan looked up sadly as her eyes locked with his she saw something she had never seen before. She saw tears falling down his face. His eyes pleading for her to listen. And his expression seemed to define everything she was feeling inside, behind the anger. "What is there to say Tre? I heard everything last night." Evan replied dully. " Evan, no, there's so much more to it. Please just listen." Tre said stepping forward. Slowly Evan nodded. "Okay, I'll listen. But I won't forgive you." She said quietly. Tre nodded.
They both sat down right there in the middle of the driveway. "Evan, I am so sorry for putting you through so much. I have turned into a completely different person lately. And I... I understand if you want to leave me, but if you do I just want you to know I'm going to spend every moment of the rest of my life to try and get you back. I know I may not show it all the time, but I do give a damn. I know you aren't going to believe me now but I've spent a lot of time thinking about you and me and us and... I love you. I love you more than anyone else ever could. And, Maybe one day when you can trust me again... maybe we can go somewhere nice and I can propose to you and we can have a big wedding... I'm so sorry for treating you like you were nothing to me. I want us to be happy again. I'm going to stop drinking so much. And I know this doesn't make a difference now but I was drunk when I messed around with that other girl... ."
"Sammi... ." Evan whispered.
"What?" Tre said.
"Her name w-was Sammi." Evan replied picking at some grass that was growing through the concrete.
"But Evan... please just... I'm sorry. I don't know anything else I can say other than I'm sorry and I love you and I swear on my life I will never do anything like that to you ever again. Evan, honestly, I don't know if I can live without you. Please Evan can we please just try again... no more broken promises, no more lying, no more secrets, less drinking and drugs?" Tre said as tears still slowly ran down his face.
Evan sighed. "Okay, but Tre. Can you do something for me first?" She said finally.
"Yes, anything." Tre replied.
"Hug me. I could really use a Tre hug right now." Evan said smiling softly as the tears started to fall again.
Wrapping his arms around Evan Tre pulled her closer and kissed her cheek. "I'm glad we had this talk." He whispered.
Evan nodded, " I'm sorry I pushed you."
Tre hugged her tighter, " I deserved it."
Evan smiled, " Yeah, you did."
Billie Joe sighed as he watched Tre hold Evan close as they both smiled. ' She doesn't even know... ' he thought. Lost in his own thoughts Billie Joe didn't even notice Mike walk up beside him.
"You know... " Mike said making Billie Joe jump. " What you did was wrong."
Billie Joe felt a lump in his throat, " W...What are you talking about?"
"I saw Billie Joe, last night before the show. I saw you kiss her." Mike said staring into Billie Joe's eyes.
"W... Well I—I it takes two to tango Mike. You can't blame me for all of it. And besides she deserves better than him! This wasn't the first time he's cheated on her and you know it! I see how he always looks at all the other girls while she's turned around. She deserves someone who really loves her Mike, so why... why can't he just... let her go?" Billie Joe snapped.
"Billie Joe, he does love her. I've never seen Tre cry in his life, but those were real tears coming out of his eyes last night. Look at them, they're meant for each other. All I'm saying Billie Joe is now that they're trying to work things out, it has to stop. Please if anything, for the band's sake." Mike said calmly.
Billie Joe sighed as he looked back out the window. " I know."
Later that night after everyone had gone to sleep Evan woke up to a dream of the night before. Lying next to her breathing softly was Tre. Quietly Evan slipped out of bed and padded downstairs. Walking into the lounge she noticed Billie Joe sitting on the couch watching television with the sound turned low. He turned around when he heard her footsteps.
"Hey." Evan said smiling softly, "What are you doing up?"
"Just thinking. You?" Billie Joe replied.
"Just getting some water." Evan said as she turned to go to the kitchen. After getting her water Evan walked back to the lounge and sat down beside Billie Joe.
"Billie Joe, can I ask you something?" Evan said after a moment of silence.
Billie Joe nodded, " Sure, anything."
"Did we... well what happened last night?" Evan said looking down into her glass of water.
Billie Joe sighed. He should've known this was coming.
"I mean, it's just I—I just had t-this crazy dream and I just wanted to know if it was... real." Evan said nervously.
"Evan... why do you trust him so much?" Billie Joe said quietly looking Evan in the eye.
"Well, I don't know... I guess because he trusts me and well I don't really have any reason not to... ." In mid-sentence Evan caught herself; she really couldn't trust him now could she? Evan sighed as she stared into Billie Joe's eyes. "We did, didn't we." Evan said quietly.
Billie Joe nodded, " Yeah, we did." He sighed as he looked back at the television.
"Well, just so you know Billie Joe... I don't regret it. And I'm not just saying that because of what Tre did, I'm saying it because I mean it. " Evan said as she started to get up.
"Evan, wait" Billie Joe said grabbing Evan's hand, " Do really mean that?"
Evan looked down seriously, " Yeah, I do. Not everything I do is pointless."
Slowly slipping her hand out of Billie Joe's Evan started towards the stairs, but before she could reach them she felt Billie Joe's hands on her waist spinning her around.
"BJ, what are you... " Evan started.
"I love you Evan, I love you more than Tre ever will." Billie Joe said with pleading eyes.
After a moment of silence Evan finally spoke, " I've made my choice. I'm giving Tre a second chance. I'm sorry Billie Joe. " She said as she watched Billie Joe's gazed drop to the floor. Letting go of her waist Billie Joe watched Evan make her way to the stairs.
"Then I guess I'll just have to wait until the next time he hurts you." Billie Joe said bitterly.
Evan turned around and smiled slightly then replied in a matter of fact way, " Yeah, I guess so." With that she turned around and walked back up to her room.
Slipping into bed Evan kissed Tre, " I love you." She said as she wrapped her arms around him and fell back to sleep.
