Words I might have ate, chapter 5

The next day while getting ready to go to work Evan remembered what Billie Joe had said about feeling like a housewife and took it to heart. Today she decided to make herself up a little bit. Pulling her hair back and tying it up, Evan decided she wanted to do something different and pulled it down. Parting her hair in half she braided it half way down on each side and tied it up. Satisfied Evan started on her make-up. Eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow as usual then just a touch of lip-gloss. Perfect. Billie Joe was right, she did feel better.
Walking into the restaurant Evan could tell today was no different from the day before. She smiled as she saw Billie Joe walking up to her.
"Wow. You look nice today." He said stopping in front of her.
"Why thank you, so are you saying I don't look like a rundown housewife?" Evan replied continuing to fight with her apron.
"Yeah, you look like the hot mom that all the boys hit on after soccer practice." Billie Joe said laughing.
"Oh what ever!" Evan said playfully hitting Billie Joe's arm.
"Hey, I'm just telling the truth," he said holding his arms up in defense," No but really you look good today."
"Well thank you, gosh, can you help me with this?" Evan said pulling at her apron.
"Sure." Billie Joe said as Evan turned around.
"Thank you." Evan said as Billie Joe tied the back.
"No problem. Well it looks like you've got some customers so you better get out there," he said as Evan turned back around to face him.
"Yeah, see you later." She said picking up a notepad and a pen as she headed towards the dining area.
All night was non-stop, but it was good. Evan was calling out orders like crazy and getting tips and compliments out the Ying-yang. Even Mike and Billie Joe were racking up.
Billie Joe smiled a little as he passed a table of two old men bickering.
"Ask her!" one of them said.
"You ask her!" The other argued.
"No, you ask her. It was your idea." The first one protested.
"Fine!" The second one replied as he stood up and brushed off his shirt. Watching from behind the counter Billie Joe smiled as he watched the old man approach Evan.
"Excuse me ma'am." The man said tapping Evan on the shoulder.
"Yes, can I help you sir?" Evan replied politely.
"Well my pal over there and I were just wondering what a pretty young lady like yourself is doing working so hard in a place like this. You look like you deserve a break, so I was wondering if maybe I could buy you a drink after your shift." The man replied smiling.
A little embarrassed Evan smiled, " Oh, no. I'm sorry sir. I'm too young to drink and I have some other things to, um, attend to after work and I... well it was a sweet offer sir but I'm afraid I'm too young for you."
The old man smiled, "Oh that's okay dear, but here take this... my pal over there put me up to this and I would rather you have this than him. Besides you are a pretty young lady." He said dropping some money into one of the pockets of Evan's apron.
Evan felt herself blush, " Um, thank you sir. " she said as the man did a small bow and walked back to his table. As she made her way to the kitchen she saw Billie Joe laughing behind the counter.
"Whoo, go Evan. He was a fox too, I know you just had to have said yes!" He said still laughing a little.
"Yeah yeah, ha ha. Your just jealous Billie Joe because I'm more of a babe magnet than you." Evan said laughing.
"Oh yeah, I know I wish I were you so bad it's unbearable." Billie Joe replied laughing.
Just then Evan reached up and wrapped her arms around Billie Joe's neck. A little confused Billie Joe wrapped his arms around her waist and hugged her back.
"What was that for?" Billie Joe said as they pulled away.
"Just because, I'm having a really good night." Evan said smiling.
"Okay... " Billie Joe said smiling.
"Order up!" A voice called from the kitchen.
"Well it's looks like you have a job to do." Billie Joe said ushering Evan away.
"Okay!" Evan said laughing, " I'll talk to you after we're done."
The rest of the night went by pretty fast. After locking the front doors and checking to make sure everything was clean and turned off Billie Joe walked out into the dining area where Evan was sitting. Walking over Billie Joe noticed Evan was holding what he was guessing was her tips for that night.
"So... " He said sitting down," How did you do tonight?"
Evan looked up blankly. Her face was expressionless.
"Well?" Billie Joe pushed.
"I—I made... a hundred and fifty-two dollars." Evan replied.
"You did what? That's great Evan!" Billie Joe said smiling, "So... why do you not look happy?"
"I've never made this much before. I just... I don't know what to do I guess." Evan said.
"You should be happy!" Billie Joe said getting up, " You should be grinning and dancing and look at you! You're glowing!" he said pulling her up and making her smile.
"Yeah, I guess so. BJ you're crazy." Evan said laughing.
"Wow, dude I made sixty dollars in tips tonight! How did you guys do?" Mike said walking in.
"I made about the same." Billie Joe said, " But Evan's the one that racked up!"
"Oh, how much did you make EC?" Mike said.
"One hundred and fifty-two." Evan said quietly.
"What? Did you just say a hundred and fifty two? EC! That's awesome!" Mike said hugging his sister.
"Well I guess we don't have to worry about that party then now do we?" Evan said laughing.
Getting home Evan was the first in the door. She saw Tre sitting on the couch drinking a beer.
"Hey, how was work?" he said getting up and giving Evan a hug as she walked over.
"Great. How was yours?" Evan replied.
"It was okay." Tre answered.
"Well that's good then I suppose, but hey I'm going to go take a quick shower. Billie Joe can fill you in on tonight." Evan said before disappearing up the stairs.
"Dude, tonight was so great. People were giving away money like crazy." Mike said walking into the lounge.
"Cool." Tre said as Mike sat down in the chair next to him.
"Yeah, and Evan got asked out by this old man. It was hilarious." Billie Joe said coming in and sitting on the opposite end of the couch from Tre.
"Oh." Tre said.
"Dude, are you okay? You seem tense." Mike said looking at Tre seriously.
"Yeah, man, I'm fine. I'm just tired." Tre replied.
