My encounter with Green Day, chapter 13
"I'm sorry, Billie Joe."
He looked up at me, his smile fading and his joyfulness lost. "What?"
"I'm sorry. I love you and yes I want to be together with you forever, but. I am only 22. I'm really not ready to get married yet."
His eyes started to tear as he took his arm from around my shoulders. "But, your sister was only eighteen."
"My sister is a different person. I'm not ready."
He nodded and stood up. "Okay."
He walked a few feet towards the door before I stopped him.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going for a walk. I'll be back soon. You can sleep in the master bedroom tonight; I'll stay in the spare."
"Billie, don't be like this."
"Goodnight." He walked out the door and down the drive way. I watched until he was out of sight before lying back on the couch and thought about what had just happened before falling into an uncomfortable sleep.
The next morning I was woken up by the front door slamming. I bolted upright into a sitting position to see who it was. It was Billie Joe and he was drunk. I stood up and went over to him. "Billie, what-" I was cut off when he put his hand over my mouth.
"Shh, the boysh are shleeping." He slurred.
"Joey moved out and Jakob is at school."
"Oh yeah."
"Billie, I think you need to lie down. Come on." I helped him get his shoes off and lie down on the couch. I had just sat beside him on the floor when he reached out and grabbed my hand. He brought it to his mouth and kissed it. "I love you." He whispered.
"I love you too." I smiled back.
"Then why can't choo marry me?"
I just stayed silent and watched him fall asleep.
When I was sure he was asleep I got up and walked into the kitchen. I made some coffee, sat at the table and thought about stuff.
A couple hours later the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hey Tris, My dad there?" It was Jakob.
"He's asleep. Is it really important?"
"Nah. I just wanted a ride home from school. But it's fine I'll walk."
"No, it's okay I'll come pick you up."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Cool. Um, is it all right if I bring a friend over?"
"Sure."
"Okay. Thanks. Bye."
"Bye." I hung up and walked into the living room.
"Billie, I'll be back soon I'm going to pick up Jakob and his friend from school."
A muffled sound was the only response I got.
I walked to the door, put my shoes on and grabbed the keys.
When I arrived at the school I found Jakob standing just outside the main doors with his arm around his friend.
They walked over and got in.
"Thanks Tris," Jakob smiled, "Umm, Trista, this is Melanie, my girlfriend."
"HAH! I knew it!" I laughed.
"Shut up." He told me, playfully swatting my shoulder, "Melanie this is Trista. My dad's girlfriend."
The young girl smiled at me, "Hi."
"Hi." I said back as we drove away from the school parking lot.
Melanie was quite pretty. She was about 5'6, with dark brown hair, big brown eyes and freckles sprinkled over her nose.
"So, How old are you, Melanie?"
"I am fourteen."
"Aw, that's so cute. That's the age I met his father at."
"I thought you said your dad and mom were together until you were 6? Wasn't your dad like 32?" Melanie whispered to Jakob.
I smiled and kept my eyes on the road as I heard Jakob tell her how old I was.
"You're only 22?" She gasped.
"Just turned yesterday." I laughed.
"That is so cool."
As we pulled into the drive way I informed them to be quite because Billie had drank a little too much the night before.
"Go up to your room, okay?" I said as we walked in. They nodded and went upstairs. I walked into the living room to find Billie wasn't on the couch. I walked into the kitchen to find him sitting on the table with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Good afternoon. Have a nice sleep?"
"Ugh, my head is killing me."
"Want some aspirin?"
"Yes Please."
"Okay." I walked over to the fridge and took the bottle down. I took out two of the tiny white pills and got him some water.
"Here."
"Who was that girl with Jakob?" He asked as I handed him the stuff.
"That was Melanie, his girlfriend."
"Girlfriend?" Billie exclaimed almost choking on his water.
"Yeah, girlfriend." I smiled watching him shift uncomfortably in his seat.
"Maybe I should go talk to him."
"Billie, chill out. They aren't fuck buddies or anything, just friends."
The color (Or what was left of it) drained from his face. "Don't joke about that! He is my son."
I laughed and sat down beside him. "Just let them be."
"You sound like an old wise mother or something."
"Hmm, thanks a lot."
"And how do you know they aren't fuck buddies?"
"I'm a girl. I know these things."
"You're not a girl, you're a woman. You're my woman." He smiled and hugged me.
I laughed and stood up. "Okay, I am going to make dinner. What do you want?"
"Let's go out. You, me, Jakob and umm... "
"Melanie?"
"Yeah. Her. Like a double date."
"Okay. I'll go tell them." I walked up the stairs and into Jakob's room to find them making out on his bed. I smiled and leaned against the doorframe, "And here I told your dad you weren't fucking." I laughed as they jumped apart and stared at me.
"What are you doing? We weren't-"
"I know, I know. Any ways. Your dad and I are going to go out for dinner. You two want to come?"
They both looked at each other and nodded.
We walked down the stairs but on the last stair I slipped and hit my cheek on the railing.
"Fuck are you okay?" Jakob asked, helping me up.
"I'm fine. You go down and introduce Melanie to your dad, I'm gonna go tend to my wound." I laughed.
"Okay." They walked into the kitchen and I went into the bathroom. It was bleeding horribly and bruised. Not to mention it hurt like a son of a bitch. I covered the small cut until it stopped bleeding and put some makeup over it. When I came into the kitchen they were all introduced and ready to go.
A while later we were all in the car driving to a Mediterranean restaurant called Oliveto. We sat down at a table and I looked at the menu and decided on A Sirloin steak with a garden salad side and some Chardonnay. Billie got the same and Jakob and Melanie got almost the same except with a pop instead of wine. And it was all really nice. Billie had already had the reservations made because he was going to take me here in celebration of our engagement. But that didn't happen so we just called for some extra chairs and had a nice dinner. I felt so guilty for saying no to him that I was considering telling him I had changed my mind. But I just wasn't ready because from what I had seen, when you get married your relationship changes sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. I just didn't want that happening. But he looked so depressed. When we were done and at home, after we had driven Melanie home and Jakob was in bed, I decided I had to talk to him. I walked into the kitchen and sat beside him at the table.
"Hey." I said.
He looked up from what ever he was reading and smiled the most pathetic smile on the history of the planet. "Hey."
"Look, I'm really sorry, Billie Joe. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I am just not ready to be a wife. I'm too young. And I know my sister got married at 18 but I'm not her. Please stop being sad. Just because I don't want to get married doesn't mean I don't love you."
He stopped smiling and looked down at the paper again.
"Billie, please. I want to talk about this, okay? Look at me." I said lifting his chin to look at me. "I love you."
He just looked away.
"Billie, I love you. Please say you love me back."
"I love you." He said mono tone. I sighed and took my hand back.
"I'm going to bed Billie Joe. Join me if you want." I told him.
When I left the room I swear I heard him begin to sob and I felt really bad.
I walked slowly upstairs to my room but instead of going to bed, I grabbed my wallet and my cell phone and snuck out of the house. I called a cab and went to a bar. Just for the night, I had to get away. I sat by the counter and ordered wine. It was expensive, but I didn't care, I kept them coming until I got sick of wine and ordered some vodka. At 2am the bar closed and I was forced to leave, drunken and alone. I walked about eight feet before I passed out on the sidewalk.
He looked up at me, his smile fading and his joyfulness lost. "What?"
"I'm sorry. I love you and yes I want to be together with you forever, but. I am only 22. I'm really not ready to get married yet."
