Billie The Bully, chapter 7
Lucy hugged him for a while, then she heard banging on the door. She prayed that it was Tre and Mike.
She heard a really loud bang, a crash, and then yelling.
Oh, thank God, She thought. She could hear Tre.
'LUCY!' He shrieked up the stairs.
'Lucy, are you up here?' Mike shouted.
She heard them running up the stairs, and a moment later the door flew open. Tre and Mike gawped at them.
'Bill, mate, what happened . . . ?' Mike gasped.
Billie looked up at them, tears slipping down his face, still clinging to Lucy.
'Ssh,' Lucy said softly. 'Billie . . . uh . . . isn't feeling too good.'
She raised her eyebrows, and though they were concerned and worried, the two boys nodded as if everything was normal.
'Bill?' Lucy said. 'D'you think we can go downstairs?'
So they went downstairs, and Lucy went to get Billie a glass of water.
She was exhausted. Only a few hours ago she still hated Billie Joe, and now she had just rescued him, in a sense. She felt terribly heroic, but also sort of scared. What if he did that again and she wasn't there for him? What if she hadn't gotten there?
It was all a lot to handle.
But there was a strange thought in Lucy's mind.
Maybe now they'd be . . . friends?
Billie Joe felt really stupid now. Why couldn't he ever just cry on sombody's shoulder, instead of going all psycho?
'Billie, why did you do that?' Lucy had gone home, but Mike and Tre were still there. They always were.
'I . . . I hate it.' Billie muttered. 'My life sucks.'
'Well, that makes us sound good, doesn't it?' Tre said.
Billie smiled.
'I dunno.' He sighed. 'She's so perfect, why would she ever want me?'
Mike and Tre snapped their heads up. What the fuck?
Billie bit his lip. 'I mean . . . uh . . .'
'Oh my fucking God Billie!' Tre yelled. 'All this shit is because of a girl? A girl? What the fuck?'
'Hey, it's not my fault I fell for her!' Billie whined.
'Well who the hell is it?' Mike asked. 'Goddamn it! We thought you were being abused or something! And it's just because of some girl!'
'It's not just some girl!' Billie shrieked. 'It's fucking Lucy!!!'
'Back to school tomorrow, eh?' Mike smiled as he walked along the canal with Lucy. Lucy looked pretty glum, he noticed. She was dressed from head to toe in black and was sort of mooching along the frosted pathway.
'Yeah.' She murmured.
'Are you OK, Lu?' Mike asked as they sat on a bench.
She rubbed her gloved hands together and sighed. 'Yeah. Is Billie OK?'
It was Sunday, and Lucy hadn't seen Billie yet. She'd spent Jess's last days having makeovers and extreme karaoke sessions, and she'd stayed overnight at her grandma's a few times. Overall, she'd been kinda busy.
Or maybe . . .
'Yeah,' Mike said, 'Me and Tre have been round a few times.'
'Why . . . why did he do that?' Lucy asked quietly. 'I was really scared, Mikey! I thought he was gonna . . .'
Mike put his arms around Lucy. 'Aw, Lu, baby, he was just a bit down.'
'But why?' Lucy pressed.
Mike sighed. 'If you really want to know, I think you should ask him.'
