Tears Fade Away, but Scars Stay the Same, chapter 11
"MIKE!! Come on! We're going to be late!" I called form the bottom of the stairs. We we're going over to the school to see the project Adrienne had entered in some contest for Social Studies.
"I'm coming," he said, while running down the stairs.
"Billie's waiting outside, let's go... NOW!" I pulled him out of the door and he stumbled behind for a few minutes until we reached Billie.
"Mike, you're making us late again," Billie said as we started walking to the school.
"I told you not to look at that porn right before we left," I said as a joke. Mike hit my arm and Billie started laughing.
"I wasn't!" Mike screeched.
"Sure, Mike. We believe ya," I said.
"At least I don't write poetry and songs about boys I love."
"Shut up! And yes you do... I saw your love notes to Billie Joe you keep under your bed," I said
"What the hell... Esther, I'm gonna hurt you one day."
"How?" Billie asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Shut up, you perv." Mike said.
We got to the school a while later and Adrienne was waiting outside for us.
"Hi, guys. Everyone's inside while those people are judging. I was too nervous to wait by my project," she said
"That's okay, let's just go in now," Billie smiled to her.
"Are they together?" I whispered to Mike as they walked in the school together.
"No, no... just friends."
"Are you lying?"
"No."
"Okay," I shrugged as we walked in to join Adrienne and Billie.
The four of us stood near her project as Adrienne bit her nails, Billie kept looking at her and smiling to make her feel better. I felt jealousy growing inside my chest.
"Esther, calm down," Mike hissed at me.
"I am calm" I snapped.
"Okay... whatever you say."
"Hmph," I crossed my arms across my chest and the judges walked away from Adrienne's project.
"How do you think I did?" she asked
"Great," Mike said.
"Nice," I responded.
"Speechless," Billie said quietly. I stared at him for a second.
"What time is it?" Mike asked.
"7:00 PM. Why?" I said.
"Don't know. No offense, Adie, but I'm sort of bored";
"It's okay. You can leave if you want. It still has forty five minutes to go," Adie said.
"Oh, in that case, I'll just stay, no problem."
"Thanks Mike," And she went up and hugged him.
I sighed and walked away, she confused me. Adrienne was my friend, but she just confused me on who she liked.
I walked outside and stared at the sky. It was a really light blue, with a dark purple near the horizon. The stars added small, glistening parts to the sky.
Just as I started to fall asleep, sitting on the steps to the school, I heard the door shut.
"Esther, what are you doing out here?" It was Mike.
"Nothing, there's just too many people in there," I said. He sat down next to me.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, that, and Adrienne confuses me."
"I thought you liked her"; Mike said
"No, I do, she's a nice friend, but she flirts with you and Billie and it confuses me on who she likes," I confessed, he sighed. The door opened.
"Hey, you guys, they're about to announce the winners," Billie said.
"Okay, we're coming" I said.
"I'm coming," he said, while running down the stairs.
