Our Story, chapter 14
I slung my carry-on over my shoulder as I stepped into the airport terminal. I rummaged through my purse for my sunglasses and put them on top of my head once I had found them. I was getting more and more excited with every step I took. I couldn't believe that I had actually moved to California. I excitedly made my way to the baggage claim, knowing that in only a few shot minutes I was going to get to see Billie again. I grabbed a cart and stood around the baggage claim anxiously waiting for my three huge suitcases. Miraculously, they were the first three pieces of luggage on the conveyer belt.
"Looks like today is my lucky day." I said cheerfully as I loaded my suitcases onto the cart. I looked up and caught the eye of the man standing next to me. He was probably a few years older than me, tan, handsome, with a great smile.
"Guess so." He responded, flashing me a huge grin.
I felt myself blush. I honestly hadn't reacted to a guy in that way since I had met Billie Joe four years earlier. He took a few steps closer to me and extended his hand.
"Hi. I'm Jack." He said, flashing me a smile once again.
"Hey, I'm... " I stopped myself. 'Why was I wasting my time on this guy when my fiancé was waiting for me on the other side of these turnstiles?' I thought to myself.
"Engaged." I blurted out as I turned my cart around and headed for the turnstiles.
I walked out and scanned the crowd for Billie. I didn't see him. With every smiling face and 'Welcome Home!' sign I saw, I became more and more excited to see him. Up ahead I saw a bunch of purple balloons and a man holding a dozen pink roses. I couldn't see his face, because of the people in front of me, but I was sure it was Billie. I quickened my pace as I got closer to him, but was almost knocked over as a girl ran past me and jumped into the man's arms. Needless to say, it wasn't Billie. I made my way over to the revolving door that led to the sidewalk outside. I stopped and scanned the faces in the crowd once again. 'Maybe I just missed him.' I thought to myself.
I walked back over into the crowd again to look for Billie, but it seemed that everyone there had found who they were looking for. I felt my face begin to burn as I saw Jack make his way through the crowd and over to a girl about my age. He picked her up and spun her around. I felt a few tears escape from my eyes as I watched them walk out of the airport hand in hand. I quickly wiped them away and walked back over to the revolving doors.
"Asshole." I muttered to myself as I walked out onto the sidewalk and put on my sunglasses.
As soon as I walked outside I was stopped by a man in a black business suit.
"Are you Emily?" He asked.
"Yes." I responded. "Why?"
"These are for you." He answered as he handed me a bouquet of pink and white lilies, my favorite flower.
"Mr. Armstrong apologizes for not being able to make it today, but he sends those and that." He said as he pointed to a black Rolls Royce limousine parked a little further down the sidewalk.
"Like that makes up for it." I said as I rolled my eyes.
The driver, Frank, loaded my luggage into the trunk and took the bouquet from me.
"I'll hold these for you ma'am." He said as he opened the door to the backseat.
Before I got a chance to get in the car, a stream of hot pink balloons came pouring out of the limousine. People stopped to stare as hundreds of balloons came flying out of the car. I stood back in amazement as the sky filled with small pink orbs. I looked up at Frank, who was grinning like a fool.
"What is all this?" I asked.
"I don't know ma'am. Maybe you'll find some sort of hint inside the car." He answered as he helped me into the backseat.
I got into the backseat of the limousine and saw Billie Joe sitting in the seat across from me.
"Hey." He said coyly.
"Had you been sitting in here this whole time with all those balloons?" I asked.
"Umm, pretty much." He said as he began to laugh.
"You're so weird." I teased as I crawled onto his seat and wrapped my arms around him.
He put his arms around me too and kissed me softly on the lips. We rode the rest of the way home like that, wrapped up in one another, just enjoying each other's company.
