Breaking Point, chapter 2
She could hear two people in a heated argument, and after turning the corner, Callisa saw that the cashier was arguing with a young man. From the sound of it, the young man was being accused of stealing something from the store.
"Are you crazy? Insane? Do you need your head checked?" Callisa couldn't help but let out a small laugh at the mans cocky tone of voice. The cashier swung his head around to glare at her.
"Are you looking for something?" His tone was angry and he was having trouble looking at Callisa and the man in front of him at the same time.
"Actually," she smiled as she moved to the young mans side," I was wondering if you could tell me where the nearest town is? And if you had a map I could see, it would be a big help." She put on a sugary smile. When the cashier turned his back get her a map, the man left the store in a hurry. The cashier turned back to her and noticed she was alone.
"Where did he go? I wasn't finished with him!" His face turned red as he pointed her in the direction of the next town. She smiled and thanked him before heading out the door. As soon as she was out the door, Callisa busted out in laughter.
"What's so funny? Was it something I did?" Callisa turned at the sound of the mans voice. A sharp intake of breath escaped her when she saw him again. If she thought he was gorgeous the first time, now he was an angel. He had black hair with blue tips that was gleaming in the sun. His tan and built body made her wonder what he did for a living, maybe outdoors or something. He was grinning as he walked towards her; Callisa couldn't help but smile back.
"No actually, it was the look on that cashiers face when he saw that you were gone. I think he wanted to kill me or something! Somehow, I don't think I want to follow his directions!" He laughed, as if a mental picture had popped into his head.
"Well... " his words trailed off as he waited for her name. It took a moment for Callisa to realize what he wanted.
"Oh! My name's Callisa, or Calli. And you would be?" This time, she was the one waiting for a name.
"Well Calli, I'm Eric. And I could give you a lift if you want. I'm headed down to California, hook up with a couple buddies of mine. I could drop you off wherever you want, or you could come the whole way." He waved his hand behind him and it was just then that Callisa noticed his truck. It was a 2006 Dodge, with a black finish and red fire strikes on the sides.
"Damn!" Eric laughed at Callisa's reaction. 'Sorry, that was kind of a reflex." She blushed when she looked at him again.
"So? How about that ride?" Eric moved to the driver's side door and started opening it.
"I'm coming! I walked too much last night, I'm not doing it today!" She smiled and put her stuff in the truck bed, everything but her guitar. Eric gave Callisa a strange look when she put it in the backseat of the cab. "This never leaves my side! Well, at least not usually." Eric just shrugged at her explanation and climbed in the seat.
As he turned the truck around and they started down the road, Callisa looked in her rear view mirror, and prayed she would never have to go home. It wasn't long after Eric turned the xm radio onto a rock station, that Callisa was fast asleep and dreaming again.
