Regrets Of A Teenage Life (Sequel To Time Of My Life), chapter 23
***Matthew's POV***
Since that day, nearly 3 years ago I had not spoken to any of my family. Me and Emma get by, living in an apartment in Oakland. Our daughter, Ellie is nearly 3 and has never met any of her family other than her Aunt Katie. I often wonder what would happen if we spoke to them again? I know they adopted already. Like I give a shit. I wish I could turn back time so I never hit my dad. I know now that I should not have over reacted. I guess I should make the effort to speak to them. In fact I will. Right now.
Only 20 minutes later I am standing outside the place I called home for nearly 16 years. My hand raised ready to knock and Ellie, is standing next to me puzzled. I knock and wait. There he is, my little brother now aged 15 standing staring at me.
"M-m-mom! Dad!" he yelled. They came to the door a look of shock and anger. I pick Ellie up and tell her that it is her family.
"Matthew!" My mom yelled bursting out crying and throwing her arms around my neck.
"Mom I have missed you so much, all of you even dad. Ever since it happened I have regretted it. He will never forgive me, not now." I started crying in my mother's arms as I was pulled inside.
"Jake would you entertain..." Mom stoppped
"Ellie" I choked out. Jake nodded. I took Ellie's hands and knelt down infront of her.
"This is your uncle Jake. He is gonna play with you do as he says ok" I told her, before she ran off with Jake.
My mom looked at me, tears still leaking down her face. My dad looked at me. All I saw were dark green, tunneling eyes not letting me know what he was feeling.
"Dad I can't begin to say sorry because, sorry is no where near good enough. I am asking you as your son please forgive me" I pleaded with my eyes. He broke down and hugged me. I cried into his shirt. We didn't let each other go for several minutes. When we broke apart dad wiped his eyes. He never let us see him cry. He smiled weakly.
"I deserved it" he croaked
"But we didn't deserve not being spoken to for nearly 3 years. Katie wouldn't tell us where you lived so we couldn't contact you and we missed Ellie's first birthday we missed your 16th we've missed so much" he said
"I know dad but, I didn't think you wanted to see me again so, I just stayed away, I was scared dad" I said.
"I guess we should introduce everyone." Mom said going to fetch Jake and Ellie and their new daughter, my new sister.
When we were all sat down we started.
"Well Ellie these two here are your Grandparents. Grandma and Grandad. That is your uncle Jake"
"And this is your Aunt Sophie" said my dad
"Sophie this is your big brother Matthew can you remember me talking about him?" He asked. She nodded shyly.
"How old is she?" I asked
"She is nearly 5 now" my mom told me.
"She is so pretty. I can't believe how much of an ass hole I was" I said shaking my head.
"Why don't Sophie and Ellie go play while the older people talk" Suggested my dad
"Ok daddy" said Sophie taking Ellie's hand and they ran off together.
"I guess we should catch up" I said.
"yeah well you go first" said my dad
"Well three years ago we lived with Katie until my 16th birthday. I had a job working at the mall and then when I had saved enough over my 16th birthday we rented an apartment in Oakland. We have lived there since." I said telling my story as short as possible.
"Well three years ago we tried to see you at Katies but you wouldn't let us. Then when we found out you moved, after your 16th birthday we didn't know where. We were afraid you moved to England to live with Emma's parents. Never the less, we tried to get Katie to tell us. In the three years Tre and Kailey have divorced and Tre has custody of their new child Ben. He is nearly two now. Despite the divorce Tre helped us to try and find you as did Mike and Abby. We gave up about a year ago. We thought you were gone for good but now here you are." Said my dad smiling again.
"what about you Jake?" I asked. He looked up and began talking
"well I helped everyone to look for you but a lot of the time I spent with Vicki. Especially, after my 13th birthday when we started going out. A lot of the time we would stay home and Look after Sophie and then, Ben when he came a long. Me and Vicki have now been going out for two years almost three" he finished.
"good on you little brother" I said winking and patting him on the back.
"I guess we can all go out for a meal tonight to celebrate. Emma can come too" said my dad smiling
"nah Emma is visiting her parents in England. They still don't know they are grandparents. She is still afraid to tell them." I explained
"Well just us. Dinner in an hour and you and Ellie are welcome to stop the night" My dad said hugging me, glad to have his eldest son back.
An hour later, we were all heading into a restaurant as one big happy family once again.
When we got back "home" Ellie was extremely tired.
"I'll put her to bed and read her a story" said my dad, happy he could be with his granddaughter finally.
He took Ellie up to bed and was reading her a story while she was sat on his knee. I watched from out on the landing.
"You know Ellie I have just met you but you know whenever you need someone grandad will always be here for you because, I love you" he said giving her forehead a kiss.
"I love you too grandad" she replied, curled up in his arms. They both fell asleep in eachothers arms, and everyone was one happy family again.
Forever.
