Killing Loneliness, chapter 2

Mike was in the back of his mate Aaron's car. There she was, slowly making her way down
Road...

"Hey look guys, there's that cow with no friends," he said. They all laughed, except Mike.
He didn't say anything though.

They drove into school and Aaron parked his car. Mike took his stuff out of the car and
Looked over. He could see her, on her own, stood there, with her hair blowing in the wind.
She was at quite a distance, but Mike thought she looked so pretty. He wanted to get to
Know her but he was sure that was gonna be hard. It would be easiest to just keep out of the way.

The bell rang and everyone made their way into school. Registration took place and the a second bell rang and everyone soon flooded the corridor. Scarlett was trying to get to the English room. People soon were in their classrooms and the corridor was a bit more open.
She continued she spotted someone with black jeans and a sleeveless white top. She
Knew who it was and shyly lifted up her head. Their eyes met. Mike's eyes shot back straight ahead of him again and Scarlett immediately looked down again. She felt her cheeks blushing red. But she'd looked at him. She knew she liked him, but no one liked her now. She's just have to accept it.

The day slowly dragged along. She managed to concentrate even though she kept thinking about the guy.

The end of day bell finally rang. Everyone shot up and left the classroom. Scarlett went to her locker and grabbed some stuff. Someone deliberately knocked into her.

"Watch where your going you dopey cow!" yelled Megan Wallace, the bitchiest, "coolest", tartiest girl in her year group. Scarlett thought she was a total slag. "You ought to diet so that your great big fucking ass ain't in everyone's way!"

Scarlett sighed, she wasn't fat though. She was sick to death of everyone's comments. She stuck her bag on her shoulder and made her way out of school.

She began walking up the path that lead through the forest, daydreaming and humming to herself.

"See you later guys." Mike said to his mates and began walking up the path to get to his
apartment. He looked up, 10 metres in front of him was the girl in the 12th year. "Should I talk to her?" he thought. Now was his chance. No one was around. He just wanted to find out what she was like. So he sped up his pace.

Scarlett heard someone's footsteps behind her. Probably another one trying to give me more hell, she thought. She glanced behind her quickly just to see who it was. She nearly jumped when she saw it was the guy in the last grade.

"Hi," he said he quickly before she could turn round.

"Oh hi," she answered back. Why the hell was he talking to her. But she was really pleased all the same.

"You, uh, walk home this way?" he asked, hoping they could get a conversation going.

"Uh yeah," Mike was now right beside her. Scarlett felt her heart leap within her chest
and started to beat faster and faster and then plummet back down again. "Why is he
talking to me?" she thought "doesn't he think I'm a complete loner, like everyone else?"

"I'm Mike by the way," he said to her. He felt a bit nervous talking to her but this was
the best chance he had.

Mike, she thought wow, I finally know his name!

"I'm Scarlett," she said quietly "it's a stupid name, people call me red."

"It's not stupid, at least it's more individual." he said. He must sound quite soppy. Really
Unlike his usual jokey self but he was nervous with her.

"So um, what do you like doing.?"

Scarlett sighed.

"You can't really do that much when you're a complete loner." She felt embarrassed saying that to him. She still couldn't believe he was actually speaking to him.

Mike felt sorry for her and wished he'd never said that. He wasn't sure what to say next.
There was a long silence.

"Do you do anything interesting?" she said not wanting to continue the embarrassing pause.

"Well I'm uh in a band, Sweet Children." He answered pleased she had broken the silence.
"We're in Battle of the Bands actually. They're actually judging the top 10 on Friday night. To bring it down to the next 5, and then it'll be the final."

"Wow, you guys must be good then," she was pretty impressed," who else is in the band?"

"Oh the other guys, you wouldn't know them, Tre and Billie, they're called, well Billie Joe."

Scarlett had now reached the top of her street.

"This is where I live, um so I uh, well, guess I'll see you tomorrow then?"

"Yeah, well it's been nice meeting you, Scarlett, see you tomorrow."

She gave him a shy litte wave. He smiled at her and stood and watched her walk
For a few moments while she paced down the street.

***Scarlett P. O. V****

Oh my God you talked to him! And he was nice to you! Oh shit I totally messed it up. Why did I just stand there, why couldn't I have given him decent answers? God only knows what he thinks of me now. You totally screwed this up you idiot. I don't think I'll really be seeing him tomorrow.

****Mike P. O. V****

Wow, she is awesome. She seemed kind of shy though. If only she didn't seem to be so
Unpopular at school, then I could get to know her better. People would not except it.
Maybe I'll see her tomorrow.

He sighed, she was great, she hadn't showed it, but he knew there was a spark in her, and hopefully he would see it, but for now he would have to wait.

**********

"Scarlett, come here please!" Her mother called ot her.

She let out a sigh of breath. What the hell did she wan't now. All she wanted to do lie
And think of Mike. Mike, she knew his name. He was so nice, so sweet, but at the same time really, well, manlike!

"Scarlett!"

"I'm coming!" she yelled in frustration. She went into the kitchen.

"Scarlett, I wan't you to start extra maths tuition on Friday's from now on. C's simply aren't good enough, you need to improve."

"Maths tuition! On a Friday, you've gotta be kidding!" she whined back in a quite a loud voice.

"Well I'm afraid you're going, like your father said, no daughter of mine is going to end
up as a prostitute! You will pass your next lot of tests with straight A's!"

"Please Mom, I promise I will work hard but I don't want stupid tutitions,
especially not on a Friday!"

"My word is final."

She stormed up to her room.

I hate, hate, hate them! She screamed in her head. What kind of assholes of parents forced their kids to do that kind of crap. Sure parents should encourage their kids, but not force them to better than they could! Ok she had gone down quite a bit but everything was so mucked up it was hard.

Her mind wandered off again, thinking about Mike. She lay on her bed and after a while fell asleep.

****Next day********

Scarlett uwillingly slumped into the yard. Katie was already there. Only two of her blouse buttons done up, revealing her bra. God Mom, she thought, I think one of your daughters is gonna end up as a slut. Katie turned her head towards her give her a dirty look. They were all bitching about her but Scarlett didn't care. To hell with them.

She hung around for a while, not bothering to go in. A car sped past up into the yard. The guy parked it and they all got out. Mike was one. She looked at him, and saw Mike. He was at quite a distance but she was sure he gave her a quick smile.

Scarlett did not concentrate at all that day. She hardly knew anything about him, she only learnt his name yesterday! But she felt like she was in love with him. Must be love at first sight, she thought.

***Bell ring***

"C'mon let's go!" Mia said to Megan. Mia was now best friends with Megan. They pushed past Scarlett and they both gave her the "God you're a freak" look. She wasn't bothered, she was used to it.
But she wished she was still friends with Mia. Mia was a great person, but she was taken
by peer pressure to easily.

Again she began her way up the path. I wonder if Mike will walk as well, she hoped. She walked a few more paces.

"Hey Scarlett!" a familliar voice called from a few metres behind. A voice that gave her
tingles of excitement. It was Mike! She turned round, a huge grin shining on her face.

"Hey what's that big cute smile for?" he asked with a giggle.

Cute!

"I dunno, I'm just in a good mood!" she definately was knowing that Mike actually was still talking to her.

"Well good," he said "do you um like punk rock, Scarlett?"

"Yeah definitely! It's my favourite." she answered.

Mike drew a deep breath and paused.

"Look um, I know I've pretty much only just met you," he said, her eyes avoiding her, "but um, well you know I told you I was in Battle of the Bands? Do you um... Well wanna come and watch?"

"Are you serious," she said in total disbelief "Aren't like all your friends gonna be there?"

"Actually no, you see they're not really into rock that much and they were supposed to be going out so um, cos you're allowed one person to come and sit like right at the front. This is a much more you know posher competition rather than in just some shabby place."

He was definately nervous talking to her, loads of "ums" kept slipping out.

"And you want ME to come?" Scarlett couldn't believe what she was hearing. A guy who was in a band and was talking to HER, the "saddest" person in the school, and asking her to watch him in Battle of the Bands when only one person could come!

"Well yeah if you wanna, do you?"

"Yeah definitely, when is it?"

"This Friday."

"That should be Ok" she would be able to get round her parents. And then she remembered.
"Shit!"

"Oh are you doing something?"

"Oh, FUCK!" she was so pissed off "I'm supposed to have stupid MATHS tuition!"

"Maths tuition? Really?"

"Yeah, since everything has been so mucked up my grade have dropped and my parents they're the type who are convinced if you don't get straight A's in everything you'll end
up as a slag, I hate them."

"Why would you be some kind of a slag, I mean did you see that one today who had her shirt undone!" he said obviously thinking she just looked like a complete idiot.

"That's my sister." Scarlett said.

"Oh sorry I didn't realise." Mike aplogised.

"Feel free to slag her off all you like, I hate her, like I hate my parents."

"Why do you hate them so much?" asked Mike, he could tell that would be annoying but he could tell she really meant it.

"Well since all my friends buggared off and left me, my sister's just been such a bitch. they constantly nag at me because Katie gets A's in everything and they think she's perfect and it's not like I can talk to them or anything..." she sucked in a huge breath, she was determined not to cry, but she couldn't hold herself. She had been so lonely, and now all this stuff had built up, life was so boring. Her parents never let her have fun any more, she had no-one turn to, she was simply fed up.

Her eyes welled up with tears, and they began to pour out. She felt so embarrased. Crying in front of Mike!

"Hey Scarlett, are you Ok? What's up?" He didn't have a clue what was up with her.

"Sorry!" she said to him.

"It's Ok, what you upset about?"

"Oh God, EVERYTHING! My Dad's just a total bastard! And my Mom they wreck everything! I mean about a year ago, I was going out with this guy, they were constantly going on at me about getting pregnant and all that, we only kissed!" she sighed loudly "Everything I do is always wrong to them!"

"So you're not gonna make it on Friday then?" he said with a bit of disapointment in his voice.

"I can, I'll probably get into trouble but I don't care! I'm sick of them, now I just don't
Give a shit about what they think!"

Mike put a hand on her shoulder. The tingly spine feeling came back again. He was touching her!

"So you're coming, cool!" he was really pleased, perhaps they could get to know each other even better then.
