*My POV*
The next morning, we woke up freezing. Living in a gutted out house isn't that nice, let me tell you. I rolled over on the cold, concrete floor to see Justin's friendly face looking at me.
"Good Morning," I said to him.
"Morning! So, where are we going today?" he asked me. I sat up, and grabbed a map of California out of my bag.
"Well," I said, "We're aiming for Sacramento today, and by the end of the week, we're aiming for Reno in Nevada."
"Good idea."
We packed up what we had used the previous night, and caught a bus to Santa Rosa. It took a while, but after hitching and several buses, we hit the bright lights of Sacramento!
*Mike's POV*
I woke up in the morning, crashed out on the bed, still fully clothed. What time did I get to sleep last night? I stood up of the bed, and got some coffee. After drinking the coffee, I got back into the car and drove around Berkeley. I looked out of the side window, to see a small abandoned house. I pulled over in front of it, and walked inside. There was a small, silver necklace lying on the floor. I bent over to pick it up. On the end, there was a small pendent, with a lion on the end of it. I thought of the scene back at the adoption centre
*Flashback*
10 minutes later. I was called into the Foyer, where Mike was waiting on the cold, hard, plastic chairs. I was given a pendant thingie by the Adoption Centre before I left forever. It was a sort of lion type thing, rather weird.
*Real Time*
I stared at the pendent and thought of the incident.
"They must have been here... " I thought aloud. I ran out of the house and to the shop opposite the house. "Excuse me, sir, do you recognize this girl?" I asked him, showing him a photo of Eliza.
"Uh... Yeah, I saw her catch a bus outside of here this morning with some guy."
"Do you know where the bus was going?"
"Uh... Santa Rosa I think... "
"Thanks, man."
I ran out of the door, and drove to Santa Rosa. It took a long time, but I wasn't going to stop. Even though I knew the area well, I pulled out a road map to make guesses on their next destination.
"Sacramento! That's it!" I said excitedly. I started to drive to Sacramento, and eventually arrived there after a couple of hours.
*Justin's POV*
Eliza and I were walking around the city streets, trying to find some sort of accommodation. Since Sacramento isn't exactly the best place to try and slag free rooms, we went to the station to try and find a train that went to Reno. We booked tickets on the next train, which left at 9:00am the next morning. We caught another bus to the outskirts of town, where we could try to find some really cheap beds. But we ran into something we didn't even think would happen. We were sitting on the bus and then there was a loud honking of a horn outside of the bus. I looked out to see who it was, and a large, black BMW came into site. Holy Shit.
"Uh... Lizzy?"
"Yep?"
"You better look at this," I said, pointing to the car.
*My POV*
"FUCK! How the bloody hell did he know were we were?" I shouted, as Mike pulled in front of the bus, making it stop dead in its tracks.
"Shit," I said quietly, as Mike banged on the door of the bus. The bus driver opened the door, and Mike clambered into the bus. He walked towards us, and I took Justin's hand.
"ELIZA! COME HERE NOW!" Mike yelled.
"WHY SHOULD I? YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"
"AS A MATTER OF FACT, I CAN! NOW GET HERE!"
I didn't move.
"NOW ARE YOU GOING TO FOLLOW ME OR AM I GOING TO HAVE TO DRAG YOU?"
"I think you're going to have to drag me... "
Mike grabbed me by the arm, and dragged me out of the bus, with me still clutching on to Justin. Mike then opened the car door for me, and I reluctantly got inside.
It was a quiet drive home. And a long one.
"Where were you actually planning to go?" Mike asked.
"..Reno. We'd booked the tickets for tomorrow morning anyway."
"Great. And you would support yourself... "
"Mike, just let it go."
We didn't talk for the rest of the trip. When we got back to Oakland, we dropped Justin off at his place to face the music of his parents.
When we went home, I lay down on my bed and just thought. What if we had actually made it to Reno? Would we have actually managed in the city alone? Probably not. But was it an issue? NO. But who cares? We got a taste of the open road.
And that taste was sure mighty fine.
