Basketcase, chapter 18

"We give the custody of Erin Steineckert to.... her mother, Mary Steineckert. Visitation rights of the father may proceed with granted permission from the mother."
Her mother spoke immediately, "No, I don't want her around him any longer." I glared at her, then turned my attention to Erin, she was bawling, he father hugged her tight, a few tears escaped him. I looked at the guys, the looked about ready to stomp up to her mother and punch her lights out. I was so shocked I didn't know what to think. The court filed out, and Erin's mother lead her out the door. I glanced at her father who stared longingly. I ran after them, with Tre on my heals. Outside he sprinted past me. He stopped the car door, as it was being slammed shut.
"You can't take her!" He exclaimed. Her mother looked at him with raised eyebrows.
"And why is that?" she inquired. He stared at her, at loss for words. She stepped into the passenger seat. Erin rolled down the window and kissed Tre, one last time. She held her hand out to me, I took it. The car rolled forward, I followed it, not letting go of her hand, it sped up and I ran with it, tears streaming down my face.
"I love you!" I yelled after her as I watched the car speed down the road. It wasn't until then that I realized there was something in my hand. I opened it to find a note. Opening I started to read it, the guys came up to me, and lead me out of the road as I read the note, paying no attention to them.
I know where she's taking me..... help me, please, don't let her hurt me again. I love you, I'll wait for you.
Underneath it a number and an address was scrawled down.
Call here, this is my aunt, she will help you.
I finally look up, after reading it 3 or 4 times. Tre takes it from me and reads it. His eyes glazing over as he does. The note is passed around to everyone. I look up at a passing car to see her father driving by, looking lost, confused, and hurt. I look after him with sympathy. Something had to be done.
Eventually we went home, silently, Ashley and I still crying. We tried to calm down, nothing was happening, we all stayed at Mike's that night. We tried to sleep, but I couldn't. I kept thinking about the note it ran through my mind over and over. I knew something had to be done.
"Billie?" I asked through the darkness.
"Hmm?" he answered.
"We need to help her." he sat up a little as I said this.
"I know, and we will. But trust me. There's nothing we can do right now. At least wait until morning, and we'll leave." he said, I could tell he wanted to help, he just didn't know how. I sighed and laid back down. Billie wrapped his arms around me, and help me close. I waited a while letting Billie fall asleep.
"Billie?" I asked, checking to make sure he was sleeping. He gave no answer. I slipped out of his grasp and tiptoed into the living room where Tre was. "Hey, Tre?" I saw him awake, reading the note. He turned towards me and sat up.
"Couldn't sleep?" he asked. I shook my head and sat next to him.
"We have to help her, now." I told him motioning towards the note.
"But she's in Texas..." he stared at me.
"That's what this is for...." I pulled out a wad of money from my pocket. "Its enough to get us there and back..."
