Cause She's 2,000 Light Years Away (A Mike Dirnt Story), chapter 15
A Week Later >>>
Mike was in Mr. Kiernan's class. The 40 years old English teacher walked around the room talking about Malvolio and his foolishness towards the letter he received (Twelfth Night). Mike took a look at the page full of words and sighed. He turned to look at the empty seat beside him, once occupied by the person he loved.
He was suddenly reminded of the first day he saw Eleanor. She was standing in the hallway, talking to Adie. She was in a long sleeve red shirt and a black long skirt and a pair of old boots. She was skinny; about five foot seven, with a fine, blunt-cut black hair that reached her shoulders. Her great round brown eyes, a light flickered excitedly in them. Her cheekbones were high, scarlet and she had a wide, full-lipped mouth.
Then, she and Adrienne walked toward him and Billie. Adrienne then introduced her to them. She smiled at them and shook their hands. The scarlet shade on her face was darkened as her hand met his. "Mike," she said and dropped her hand as if he'd burned her.
"That's right," he said, still eyeing her.
"Elle here loves rock music too," Adrienne cut in.
"Really?" Billie questioned. "Who do you like to listen to?"
"Erm... The Ramones, The Clash, you know. Those really good punk rock band." The light in her eyes flickered excitedly. Mike wasn't really paying attention in the conversation, he was actually studying her. He noticed that her hands always made airy gestures to punctuate her speech. Her expressions changed from humor to sympathy to understanding to earnest caring. He saw the way wisps of her hair fell across her cheek and how she pushed them back with her hands. He noted the smiles - genuine smiles, she bestowed on everyone. And he knew that he was in trouble already, for he had just fallen in love with her.
He snapped out of the flashback when the bell rang for lunch. Mike took the seat beside Tre and Billie took the one next to Adrienne. "Hey!" Tre greeted with his mouth full of tuna sandwich.
"You are going to choke yourself to death one day Tre, if you kept taking such big bites," Adrienne warned.
"I don't care," Tre retorted. "Billie, Mike, I got us a gig this Sunday at Tim's house."
"Cool!" Billie said and took a sip of Coke.
"Great," Mike said and looked at his sandwich. 'Tuna. It was the food that Elle ate when we are together during lunch for the first time,' Mike thought.
Another flashback going through his head.
They sat on the bench. "I'm starved," Eleanor said. He smiled at her as she took a bite off her sandwich. Then she chatted happily with Billie and Tre, carefree. She looked awfully pretty that day, in blue denim skirt and a round neck blue t-shirt that showed her delicate collarbone. Her hair was pulled up on top of her head and fastened in some mysterious way that eluded him, and wisps curled down around her neck. He couldn't keep his eyes off her ears and her neck and the hollow at the base of her throat.
"Mike? Mike!"
"Huh?" He looked up at Tre. "What?"
Tre sighed. "Nothing." Mike shrugged and took a bite of the sandwich. 'I miss her so much,' he thought.
