Give or Take a Few, chapter 2

The cheerful voice of Dakota's 3rd period Spanish teacher piped up as soon as she entered the class room (five minutes late as always) with the same amount of papers in her short, fat arms. "Buenos tardes class."

The class responded. Well, only a small portion of the class that cared. That estimated out to maybe six. "Buenos tardes Seniora Akins."

After placing her paper mound on her desk, she proceeded to the front of the class where she began roll call. "Laney Adams?"

"Present."

"Sarah Biddle?"

"Present."

"Autumn Davis?"

"Present."

"Dakota Hunt?"

"President."

"Mr. Hunt, it's Present. Present. Shall I spell it out for you?" And without waiting for an answer, she picked up her blue board marker and wrote it on the board as big as she could, but in sloppy writing so it didn't matter anyway. Turning around, she glared at him and continued with the roll, which consisted of maybe 16 more pathetic teens stuck in that miserable class. "Okay class, today we're going to start on parts of the b-"

There was a sharp knock on the door followed by the shifting noise of a desk and then the opening of said door.

"Yes dear?" She lowered her reading glasses down to her nose in order to get a good look at the girl. She didn't speak, but instead just presented a piece of paper folded in half.

Meanwhile, Dakota was in the far back corner playing tic-tac-toe with Autumn who was sitting directly in front of him. He wasn't even paying attention when his teacher announced that they had a new student.

"...Alyssa Conner. Would you please go sit between Autumn and that little wretch in the corner? Autumn, dear, please scoot up a seat." She smiled sweetly to Autumn, then cast an evil look to Dakota, who was still busy with his paper.

After the class finally got situated, the lesson presumed. It was a rather boring lesson. No one spoke, almost everyone slept, and no one learned a single thing. Except for maybe Dakota. It was maybe half way through the class when he finally looked up to see the mess of dark-brown hair sitting in Autumn's normal seat. For a second, he was so confused that he didn't even realize what he had said. "You're not Autumn."

Autumn turned around in her seat as Alyssa also turned around to face Dakota. "No, I don't believe I am. I'm Alyssa."

Dakota studied her for a second. Her black hoodie, tie die shirt, the way her brown hair was almost red in the light. "Hi then, I'm Dakota. I haven't really seen you around here. New in town?"

"Yeah, I just moved here from California. Dad's fault. Better job offer, more money, the usual deal."

"Understandable."

"Yeah. I'm gonna miss it there," Alyssa said, sighing almost wistfully. Indeed she would miss living in California. She had a lot to leave behind, including her boyfriend.

"I imagine you would. I probably would too," Dakota replied. Alyssa opened her mouth to say something more, but was cut off before even uttering a sound by the bell, signaling the end of class. She turned back around and gathered up her stuff, taking a quick glance at her schedule. Lunch next.

Alyssa looked around the cafeteria of Trenton High. She bit her lip a little, frowning, as she held her lunch. She still hadn't made any friends and had no idea where she should sit, or even where she could sit for that matter. There weren't even any empty tables to make sitting by herself easy.

Dakota sat down beside Autumn at his and his friends' usual table by the windows. He smiled at a joke Crystal had just told and then glanced around the cafeteria. He almost didn't notice her, but then he whipped his head back in her direction and frowned a little. He saw the new girl he'd met in Spanish, Alyssa, standing there, lunch in hand, looking for somewhere to sit. He couldn't help but feel sorry for her and stood up, still looking over at her.

"Oi! Alyssa!" he called, causing the new student, along with half the other kids in the lunch room, to look his way. Upon seeing that he had her attention, he motioned for her to come over to the table he was standing beside. She made her way over to him, showing him a very small smile as she reached the table, glancing at all his friends who were all looking up at her.

"Hi Dakota," she said. He smiled.

"Hey," he replied, "You're sitting here, 'kay?" he told her. She was a bit surprised but nodded none the less, glad for somewhere to sit. She shyly sat down, flashing a shy smile at all of Dakota's friends. Dakota looked at everyone else.

"Guys, this is Alyssa. She's a new kid, so let's all try to play nicely." His friends all smiled and nodded, greeting the new girl. There was only one of them that stayed quiet. Autumn sent a very discreet glare toward Alyssa. She couldn't help but feel slightly jealous.

Alyssa sat down at her computer desk shortly after arriving home. She took out a pen and some paper from her school bag and placed it neatly on her desk. After thinking for a few minutes, she picked her pencil up and began to scribble a down her thoughts.

Dear Billie,

The plane ride here was hell. You wont believe how cramped it was on there. Some fat guy stunk up the bathroom in the back and the smell was so bad it reached my row. I had to deal with that. Leaving you in California wasn't worth this. I miss you so much. How's your mom taking you dropping out of school? I hope she's not too angry. Maybe you can runaway and come live with me like we planned it. Life here isn't too bad. Today was my first day of school. I went in late though because those bone heads screwed up my schedule and gave me 12th grade English. There's some pretty nice people here. It makes me miss you even more. I can wait until I get to see you in spring. Say hi to everyone for me. I love you so much.

Love
Forever and for always,
Alyssa.
