Why are There No Clouds in the Sky?, chapter 6
It was safe to say that Billie was scared when he was left alone at his front door while Mike pulled out of the driveway. It was safe to say Billie was very scared, actually.
What had he done? How could he even think of doing such a thing to his kids? To his wife? He loved them with more words than he could describe.
Slowly, Billie knocked on the large wooden front door. He heard footsteps coming slowly towards the door, and then saw Adrienne's eyes peek through the window to see who it was.
She opened the front door and stared at him straight in the eye, so coldly that it almost made Billie cry.
He was so weak and vulnerable though, almost anything could.
Before long though, Adrienne realized the state that Billie was in. She stepped back and observed him, head to toe. "What... What did you do?" she sputtered.
Billie took a deep breath, and looked down. "Caught going 90 drunk toward the cliffs out east," he said quietly.
Adrienne closed her eyes. "No, no you didn't," she whispered. "You didn't."
Billie tried to nod but her hand stopped his head as she held his forehead. "No, no you didn't," she repeated, tears starting to weld in her eyes.
"Adrienne..." he started, only to be stopped by her grabbing a small sculpture on the table by the door and throwing it to the ground.
"NO, NO YOU DIDN'T!" she screamed. "YOU WOULDN'T FUCKING DO THAT TO ME!"
She was crying hysterically now, and her knees became weak, forcing her to fall onto the floor. Billie could see his two children watching, but at the moment he couldn't care less.
Billie felt a tear fall from his own eye. He pulled her up and forced her into a hug. "I'm sorry Adrienne..." he said. "I thought I couldn't take it anymore."
Adrienne continued to cry on her husband's shoulder. "But suicide Billie?" she whispered hoarsely. "Why suicide?"
"I, I just thought," he started. "That maybe you would be better off without me."
Adrienne guided her husband into the living room and onto the couch. She wiped away his tears and put her head on his shoulder. "No, Bill," she stated. "Never."
