KJ And Billie, chapter 15

"Case 340765A Armstrong Vs. Armstrong..."

But we never heard it. We were on our way to see Kayleigh. Tre called Allie to see what was going on. Supposedly, right in the middle of the proceedings, KJ couldn't breathe, because of the pain in her stomach. She started to cry, thinking she was gonna lose the baby or something. We were all a little worried about that.
"Billie Joe, why'd you leave the court?"
"Because Kayleigh needs me."
"I thought you wanted a divorce..."
"I guess I thought wrong, Mikey. I watched her walk in there, walking down that aisle. I remembered our wedding day, how happy I was. I knew that joy and love could come back, as long as we actually tried." Tre was in tears from that, but he was smiling. So was I; it was good to hear Billie Joe talk like that. No more talk of divorce.
At the hospital, Allie was there to meet us. Tre wrapped her up in his arms as she told us.
"She's gonna be okay. The baby's gonna be okay too." I thought Billie Joe was gonna faint. The look in his eyes was full of relief and satisfaction. He took off his jacket, unknotted his tie a little, unbuttoned the top button of his shirt, and rolled up his sleeves.
"Gentlemen, ladies, I gotta go see my wife." He smiled, and we watched him walk up the stairs. He had the appearance that he was gonna hurt her, but truth was he was uncomfortable in that suit, and was about two seconds from stripping. Of course, we were smart, and used the elevator, but he still beat us! Following Allie, we went into KJ's room. They had her sitting up, sipping on some hot chocolate.
"Hey you." She looked like she didn't expect that voice to be there. As she turned, she started to cry.
"Now I'll have none of that. Who ever heard of a wife crying when she sees her husband?" Both Allie and KJ both look stunned.
"You mean..."
"I didn't stick around. You mean everything to me Kayleigh. You, Aubrey, even the little one that keeps scaring the crap out of us." The two of them laughed as he went over and sat on her bed. He wrapped his arms around her tight, like he was soaking it in. I mean it has been over a month since the two of them have been this close. He tucked her hair behind her ears, noticing how weak she looked and felt.
"I guess I took a lot out of you, huh."
"I'm tougher than I look." But she did look awful tired. Her eyes weren't really bright at all, and she had been losing a lot of weight. All the weight she had now seemed to center around the baby.
"You look like the night of the living dead, Leigh!" Tre piped in. She smiled, and then threw a piece of ice at him. She rubbed her eyes, and yawned.
"Sit tight, I'm gonna go talk to the doc about takin' you home." He kissed her forehead, and then went outside to talk to the doctor. This guy was pretty cool; he had been her doc since she was small. I went outside with Billie Joe.
"How's she doin' doc?"
"She's been under a lot of stress, and we all know she don't handle that too well. And now the baby's having issues with it. So I'm putting her on these painkillers; she's actually on one right now. She'll get really really drowsy, and sleep for a good couple of hours on them, so be careful when you let her take them."
"Are they okay for the baby?"
"I wouldn't give them to her if they weren't." Okay, so it was a stupid question. So there was a good reason for KJ's sleepiness right now. She was higher than a kite! By the time we got back in her room, she was gettin really tired Billie Joe went back beside her.
"Hey, it's okay to go to sleep, ya know. Here, I'll sing to you." Next thing you know, Billie Joe's in the middle of Wake Me Up When September Ends.He puts his arms around her and lets her lean on him as he sings. Sooner than the second chorus, she's out. Of course, we have to finish the song though. I hate leaving songs half way done. He goes and gets her things together, and we go get the paperwork. Filling those out, they give us the chair to wheel her out. Instead of walking out though, she was carried to the car by her husband, Heh. It still brings a smile thinking about this. I drove home, as he wouldn't take his paws off of her. He was even extra super careful to hold her closer if we happened to go over a bump in the road.
When we did get home, I helped him get her to the couch. She'd be up soon, and prolly would rather to be down here with us than anything. Tre Jr, Riley, and Aubrey were playing with Amy and Alex, who got home earlier this week from Fort Hood. Billie Joe and I started cooking dinner. Nothing's wierder than two vegetarians cooking for a bunch of non vegetarians. We decided on something simple; brisket, and barbecue! Out on the patio, we set up the grill, and it was made even simpler since I knew KJ was gonna make brisket for dinner, and had some set out. Except... we had never made that before. I guess it's a Texas thing. We've eaten it before, sure, but never cooked it. I was about to throw it on the grill, when,
"DON'T!" yelled Sam, KJ, Allie, Amy, and Alex. I put the meat down as I heard Aubrey and Tre Jr mimic. "Don't." Supposedly, there's preparing of the meat involved, that we had skipped, and they decided to show us how to do it. Allie made "tater salad", Sam made this thing she learned in Mexico, called 3 Milks Cake. She said it in Spanish, so don't ask me what that was! KJ, even sick, made us all drinks. Well, she had a flavored water. But the rest of us, she made this really cool drink she had seen on TV. Secret 7; Rum, Seven Up, and Pineapple Juice. They made us break our vegetarian ways, the way they were all cooking. By the time they were done, there was beer beans, tater salad, the cake, corn, okra, regular salad, chicken, grilled veggies, and of course, the brisket. KJ and Allie made this special barbecue sauce which made everything taste a lot better. Ask the kids! Aubrey had this really cute sauce mustache. Times were good, right there on the patio, eating with everybody together, and no one crying anymore.
After dinner, KJ and Billie Joe took a stroll. It took them over two hours, but it seemed to go well. They came back right before nightfall, arm in arm, her head leaning on him. He was grinning. Not that cheesy grin, but the "everything's gonna be okay" grin. It made me think back to the letter he wrote her.
"I don't know how long it's gonna take, but everything's gonna be okay." Billie Joe is hardly ever a liar.
