Always Move Forward, chapter 1
"Time's a waste when you're only meant to fall." Desiree scribbled down her thoughts, flowing through the pen and onto the paper. Westbound Sign blasted in the cd player next to her. She had it turned up so loudly the walls in her bedroom vibrated. Only fifteen more minutes of this peace and solace before "she" got home. And then there would either be yelling or ingnoring.
Desiree continued to write, lost inside herself. This was one of the only ways in which she could just get away from it all, escape. Another way seemed unrealisitc, but not impossible. Running away. She could take off so fast and far that no one would be able to catch her. The problem was that Desiree had nowhere to go. But very soon that would all change.
Until then, and on a happier note, indeed the happiest one of her life, Green Day was coming to Oakland. Her own city. They were playing at the Sassafras Ranch, a club just about three miles from her house. And of course she was going to be there, literally screaming her heart out. She was about to spew her guts out into the open air so much, that even Billie Joe would notice. And if it weren't him noticing, Desiree wouldn't be where she is today.
"Desiree!" That was "Her". She had just come in from school an hour late, because of detention, and it wasn't going to go over well with Lovely Mother.
"Where were you?" She caught up with Desiree at the top of the stairs. Desiree didn't turn around, but simply answered her.
"School."
"How come you're late? Detention again?"
"No, I had to stay after for a teacher."
"And what teacher is this...?" Desiree turned left, walked into her room and closed the door. She loved how her mother tried to make her something she wasn't. She didn't even try, she didn't care about Desiree at all. She just didn't want a stupid daughter to knick her perfect reputation. So why bother? Desiree must have had to hate her mother to plot an escape in which she would never see her face again.
Today was February 16th, the day before Billie Joe's birthday and inevitably the day before Green Day was playing at the Sassafras Ranch. Every time she thought of her only feet away from Billie, her heart beat so hard she thought for sure it was going to break through her ribcage. Desiree glanced at the clock on the wall. Only 27 hours, seven minutes and sixteen seconds before the Sassafras Ranch opened and she'd be standing in front of the small, bare stage, waiting. She knew she was destined for anything at all. Waiting was the hardest part.
Desiree's phone rang at exactly 5pm. She didn't actually hear the phone or her mother yelling until she looked up from lying on her bed to see the phone being held out to her. She pulled the headphones away from her ears.
"Frank." Frank was my driver's ed trainer. This call could have been about whether or not she was going to get her permit. She took the phone.
"Hello?"
"Hi Desiree, it's Frank."
"Hi." She sat up as her mother left the room. "So do you know if I'll get my permit? How did I do on the test?"
"Well, you didn't do too well."
"I didn't." She swallowed hard.
"You did not pass. You just missed the line." The Hellish words echoed in her head. "But you can take the test again in three months."
"Huh..." It was all she could get out. She felt so low she was ready to hang up.
"Frank, I'm gonna go."
"OK, Desiree. See you tomorrow." She dropped the phone onto the bed and absently stared at a poster on the wall. Well that was the end to any plans of escape. Now, not only did she have nowhere to go, but she had no way of getting to that "nowhere". No one could tell her it would get any better. Well, except...but that was useless in contemplating. Desiree might have believed in the most beautiful, talented and amazing musician in the world, but she was just like a thousand other fifteen-year-old girls out there. She knew she was different, but how could Billie Joe see that?
She switched off the light and sat in the dark, dreaming of a life filled with light. She was up all damn night long, thinking or whatever you might call it. Desiree was planning. Planning an escape so perfect, that she didn;t need a car and she didn't need a home, all she would need is Billie Joe. And she knew just how to get him.
