Human Medicine, chapter 34
After the wedding, Billie Joe and Jem headed for the white limo as man and wife. The driver took them for a drive around the Berkeley and Oakland area before they headed over the San Fransisco-Oakland Bay bridge into the city, where they were escorted to a club that had been rented out for their own private wedding reception. Other family guests that couldn't make it to the actual wedding ceremony made it to the reception, bearing gifts for the newlyweds... and wanting cake of course.
As soon as they had arrived, the band were set up on stage and they began their show. It was a new band that no one had seemed to have heard of, but they were very good.
The two couples walked through to the set-up tables and were announced over the singing and mad guitarist.
"The men and women of the day, Tre and Jessica Cool and Billie Joe and Jemma Armstrong. Let's hear it for the brides and grooms!" The speaker said, raising a champagne glass to them.
Guests congratulated the four of them and made small talk before everyone found a seat at a table and the caterers appeared to take orders for dinner. When the meal arrived, everyone took advantage of every chance they got to take their spoons or forks or knives and clank them against the glasses, signaling for the brides and grooms to stop whatever they were doing and kiss.
Then there was the toast from Mike as the best man.
He stood up with his glass of rum and coke and turned to the loving couples with a proud smile on his face.
"Fifteen years ago, there was this 20-year-old, poor as all punk guitar player who was pretty much as dorky as they come, yet also very kickass," Mike began with a smirk.
"His name was Billie Joe Armstrong. He seemed happily married for many years, but as life seems to go, all good things come to an end. No story is left completely finished because there's always sequels. Part 2. To be continued. For a while after the divorce, Billie Joe's life was put on hold as he became completely withdrawn. However, a girl showed up at Billie's door, Jem. His medicine had arrived."
Billie looked at Jem, squeezed her hand, and leaned over to whisper something in her ear that went unheard to anyone but her. She smiled at whatever he said and they both looked back up at Mike.
"For a while, it was quite obvious to Tre and myself that the pair were deeply in love, but apparently not to them for a long time. Through Jem, Tre met Jess and they have been unseperable ever since. However, another rift appeared, Billie lost his medication. But when something's good, when something takes hold of your heart, you can't walk away very far. It calls back to you and the only thing you can do is give in. When it comes to love, it's all or nothing," Mike rambled on quite poetically.
"Billie Joe, you are my best friend and you have been for twenty-five years and will be for another twenty-five. Jem, you were a beacon for Billie Joe. That light to call him home when he's lost. I welcome you and Jess into our surrogate family with open arms. I wish the newlyweds all the luck in the world - I wish you health, more wealth, and may you have a dozen more children each!"
"Oh, God!" Jem mutterd with a laugh while Jess covered her face with her hand in stress.
"To Billie Joe and Jem, Tre and Jess!" Mike finished.
"CHEERS!" Everyone exclaimed, raising their glasses to the happy couples.
