Human Medicine, chapter 5
The journey to the day care centre was eventful as Jem told the three stories of her and her friends when they were in their teens.
"Jess. Jess was besotted with you Tre" Jem said and Billie Joe, Mike and Jem laughed as Tre blushed.
"Do you have a photo of her?" Tre asked sheepishly.
"yea, here, wait a sec" Jem turned back round in the passenger seat of the SUV that Billie Joe was driving. Jem grabbed her purse and opened it, only to realize that Billie Joe's picture was visible. Billie Joe turned back to the road, slightly blushing, pretending he hadn't noticed. Jem found a picture of Jess, herself and Natalie dressed up as Green Day on Jem's nineteenth birthday.
"here" she said, handing the photograph over her head to Tre who sat behind her.
Tre took the picture and stared at one girl who had immediately caught his attention.
"Which one is she?" Mike asked, also looking at the photo.
Jem turned round in her seat but before she could answer, Tre pointed to a brown haired girl wearing eyeliner and trampish clothing.
"this one!" he said quietly.
"Yes that's Jess, how did you know?" Jem asked in shock.
"I... don't know!" Tre said looking up.
Silence filled the car as Billie Joe concentrated on the road, Jem and Tre stared thoughtfully at each other and Mike stared out the window. After a minute Jem asked Billie Joe "do you have nay cd's?"
"yea, here" he grabbed a cd wallet from the pocket in his door and handed it to Jem. She flicked through them 'International Superhits' caught her eye and she slyly took it out of its wallet and put it in the cd player, she fast forwarded it to track 4 "Welcome to paradise!"
"Billie, ma boy, you found a babysitter with taste in music!" Tre called over the volume of music making everyone laugh.
Billie Joe turned the music down as they pulled into a car park.
"I will be right back" Billie Joe said as he stepped out and closed the door. Jem opened her door and sat facing a view of the sea. Tre stood out beside Jem and he leaned on the side of the SUV.
"You know I could call Jess, make her come out here" Jem offered. Tre beamed.
"So, uh, how old is she?" Tre asked, slightly smirking.
"Same age as me, 25." Jem said.
Tre opened his mouth to ask another question but Billie Joe's distinctive voice was heard and Jem turned to see a small boy walking beside his father. Billie Joe smiled at both of them and was soon standing beside them.
Jem bent down to talk to Jakob.
"hello, what's your name?" she asked knowing full well what his name was.
"Jakob" the small boy said timidly.
"Jakob, that's a lovely name, come on then." Jem said holding out her hand for him to take.
Billie let go of Jakob's hand, but Jakob seized it again, moving behind his fathers leg.
Billie Joe looked worried.
"Come on, I won't hurt you" Jem said extracting Jakob's tight grip on his father. Jakob finally let go and stood in front of Jem.
"What's your name?" he asked quietly.
"I'm Jem, your new babysitter" she answered softly and pressing his nose.
"Come on then lets go" Tre said, he got into the very back of Billie's car. Billie who had been smiling down at Jakob and Jem was spurred into action and picked up Jakob.
"Daddy? Where's my seat?" Jakob inquired, looking puzzled as his father had not out him in his baby seat.
"You're too big for it Jakob" Billie explained "You're a Big boy!"
Jem smiled and climbed into the passengers seat.
Billie Joe walked round to the drivers side and climbed in also, he put his seat belt on smiling at Jem in the process.
"now, lets get some decent food!" Jem announced and Mike groaned tiredly.
"You can stay in the car Mike with Jakob, if you want" Billie suggested.
"Yeah OK" Mike made a face at Jakob, who giggled.
"Uhh Billie, if you don't mind, I will too." Tre announced.
"ok, guess its just you and me" Billie Joe said with a smile. Jem trembled and nodded, managing a noticeable smile, but feeling sick with nerves.
