Human Medicine, chapter 9
"Ok, see you next week then!" Jem said, she couldn't help but smile.
"Ok, Jem say thank you to Billie Joe for me, bye." They hung up at the same time. Jem sat there for a moment, thinking about Billie Joe when his voice broke through her thinking pattern.
"So, she's coming then?" he was standing in the doorway.
"You didn't have to do that." Jem said quietly looking at her phone.
"I wanted to," he said walking closer and sitting next to Jem on the red couch.
"Why?" Jem asked, taking the opportunity to glance at him.
"Because you've helped me, it was my turn to help you."
"But it's my job to help you."
"Wrong. It's your job to look after Jakob, not to do the cooking, cleaning and see to the health of the occupants in my house." He patted Jem's knee and stood up.
"Billie Joe?" Jem said before she could stop herself. He turned round with eyebrows raised. Jem stood up and embraced the guitarist. Billie was taken by surprise but after a moment he wrapped his arms securely around Jem, who relaxed and rested her chin on his shoulder. The hug would have lasted longer if Mike hadn't walked in.
Over the next week, time seemed to slip away and before they knew it, they were headed for the airport to pick up Jem's high school best friend Jess. Tre was literally bouncing up and down with an equal mixture of nerves and excitement. Jem laughed at his panicky questions.
They pulled into the car park and then all walked in pairs. Jem carrying Jakob walked next to Billie Joe, Mike and Tre in front. All 5 stood on the second level, Jem studying the crowd.
"There she is," she said pointing down to a lost looking Jess. In an instant Tre was downstairs running towards Jess.
The drive back to Billie's was surprisingly short. Tre and Jess were talking in the very back of the SUV in the middle was Jakob and Jem then Billie and Mike in the front.
Jess and Jem talked while making spaghetti Bolognese while the guys took it in turns to make Jakob laugh.
After dinner, Jem and Billie Joe left the kitchen to put Jaokb to sleep. They sang a duet to Jakob and watched him fall asleep. Once the mini Billie Joe was out for the count Billie said he had some paperwork to do and Jem laughed to herself when she thought "paperwork? That's not very punk."
Later on, at about 12.30am, Tre and Jess had gone outside, Mike had gone to bed and Billie Joe could be anywhere. Jem turned on the TV, she flicked on Kerrang and saw the intro the Wake Me u
Up When September Ends. She watched in awe as she had finally managed top time it right to see her favourite shot.
The song was so soothing that Jem fell back into the comfy couch and closed her eyes.
Billie Joe hummed to himself as he trotted down the stairs, it was ten past one and he had just said goodnight to Tre and Jess who were headed for Tre's bedroom. As Billie stood in his kitchen, munching a block of cheese and pouring himself a cup of hot chocolate, he heard 'Warning' very quietly. He walked into the hall and stopped chewing so he could hear better. Sure enough it was coming from the living room. Billie went back into the kitchen to remove his hot chocolate, before heading back to the hall and into his living room. The room was dark, but light was coming from the TV where Billie Joe himself was trying to pull a hat over his head whilst singing. The light shone across the couch, illuminating a figure snuggled up to a cushion and fast asleep. Billie put his drink next to the couch and quietly stepped over to her. He bent down and ran the back of his fingers down her cheek, before leaning close to her ear.
"JEMMA!" He yelled. Jem lept up and it took her a moment for her to realize where she was and that Billie Joe was near enough wetting himself laughing, rolling about on the blue carpet.
"HA HA HA" Jem said sarcastically "Very funny." Jem left the room, the TV now playing 'School of rock' by Jack Black.
It took a moment for Billie to realize Jem wasn't in the room. He turned off the TV and found his drink before quickly walking down the hall, trying not to spill it.
"Jem?" He hissed, in an attempt not to wake anyone upstairs. Once he had decided Jem was not downstairs, he scuttled upstairs and found the door to Jakob's room slightly ajar, and on further inspection he found Jem soothing Jakob, bouncing him slightly in her arms.
"You woke him up!" Jem said not turning round to face him.
"I'm sorry" Billie said guiltily, as he scuttled over to them, still successful in not spilling his hot chocolate.
"Its ok, why did you do that though? You scared me half to death."
"it was irresistible." Billie Joe smiled.
Jem placed Jakob back into his bed and covered him with a white blanket.
Jem noticed a clock on the wall and saw that it read 2am. She looked up at Billie Joe who stilled looked guilty.
She stood up and reached for his hand. Billie, puzzled, offered his hand. Jem took Billie to his room and lit the candles, so that the scent would fill the room. Billie Joe sat down on his bed and Jem next to him.
"Happy birthday Billie Joe." Jem whispered.
Billie's head shot up in surprise.
"How did you know?" he asked
"Well, I am a loyal fan." Jem said with a laugh.
"Thank you Jem."
"You're welcome, now get changed and remember to put the candles out and sleep well. Goodnight Billie Joe."
"Goodnight Jem." Billie whispered, he moved forward and kissed Jem's cheek, they both blushed a little and Jem walked out towards her own room.
