American Idiot: A CD On Paper, chapter 1

Track One: American Idiot

This was it. He was done with all this crap that America has fed him the last 18 years. Schools out, his car had the gas, he was ready to leave his deadbeat city near the Bay. He was ready to leave his life behind...

"Mom you don't understand. I'm not part of this redneck agenda under the rule of a down home American idiot." said Austin trying to calm his mom down.

"Are you saying that I'm part of this redneck agenda? Are you calling me an american idiot because I voted Bush into office?"

"No that's not what I meant... I'm old enough to leave this shit-hole town. I'm done with all of this! I want to travel go, somewhere else for awhile. Just for the summer." Austin was so stressed out with everything now. Trying to convince your mom to let you leave is not that easy.

"Ok fine...here is $200. Take it so you can buy some gas. The "American Idiot" has increased the gas prices so use it well." Austin mom, Kathy, was a hard egg to crack, but I think she let Austin win.

As Austin was driving out of town, American Idiot came on the local alternitive radio station, 99x. As he got on highway 85 he turned the song up so loud his speakers almost broke. Austin always saw himself as the american idiot. Always doing what he was told. Always sticking to his normal routine. And never, ever had the gut to leave the town he had clung to for his whole life. He never noticed how much he hated his town until he noticed all the drugs, violence, and all the times he had fallen out with his mom. His dad left them both when he was 10. On Christmas Eve 8 years ago he went to the store and just never came back.

Everytime he heard American Idiot he always had flash backs of all the times he had in the town...none were good. There was always a funeral to go to, always gang walking down the street, always a new cut on his arm. The suicide thoughts that always crossed his mind were pushed out everytime a Green Day song was on. Nothing in the world could do that. Green Days the only reason he was still alive...the only. As the song ended he could barely see the city lights from his reveiw mirror. And in that instance, Austin felt like everything would be ok for the first time in a long time.

Then his cell phone rang, it was his mom. As he slowly came out of his thoughts he answered the phone.

"Hello?"

"Hey hunny, how you doing? are you ok? Where are you at?"

"Mom i'm just outside Atlanta...I'm fine. You don't have to check up on me."

"WHAT?! Are you telling me that I can't check on my own son! What is your problem?!"

"Geeze, mom, sorry. Listen I'm trying to drive so can I call you when I check into a hotel in South Carolina?"

"Sure sweetie, I'll talk to you later. I love you."

"Yeah, ok bye."

"Bye."

Austin hasn't ever said 'I love you' to anyone since his dad left. As night fell over the smoggy air of metro- Atlanta, Austin kept driving to no where. Wherever no where was.
