A Bittersweet Birthday, chapter 1
Therese grumbled as the annoying, nasally sound of the alarm clock woke her up on the cloudy Thursday morning. "Fuck" she moaned, while angrily slamming her fist into thin air, hoping it happened to hit the clock and shut it up. When she realized she was wasting her time, she got up and punched the alarm clock with hopes that it would break. All she managed to do was turn on the radio, which just happened to be on full blast. Cursing to herself, she turned off the radio and checked the time. "Oh, shit." she mumbled. It was 7:15. Throwing the covers off of herself, she walked into the bathroom and turned on the faucet. Oblivious to the fact that the water was boiling hot, she washed her hair and body, sleep still in her eyes and only partially awake. When she turned off the running water, she stepped out of the shower and proceeded to brushing her teeth. When she was done, she wrapped a towel around her naked body and stepped into her bedroom, which was freezing compared to the warm, fog-filled bathroom.
It was this drop in temperature that finally woke her fully. Glancing at the clock, she almost yelled. It was 7:25, giving her five minutes to get out the door. "Holy fuck!" she yelled. "Watch your mouth young lady," her mother screamed from the kitched, "and get moving. You should be out the door by now." "Yeah, whatever. Shut the fuck up and maybe I can get ready." she mumbled to herself. She picked some clothes off of her floor without even looking and started pulling them on, while singing 'Waiting' to herself. She went to her dresser and started brushing her long hair, which she had died black a few years back. Applying the small amount of makeup that she wore everyday, the reality of what was happening to her finally hit. She dropped the mascara brush with her mouth open in shock. "I'm going to a Green Day concert." she whispered to herself. Even though she had bought tickets a month in advance, the reality of it hadn't hit her until now. This wasn't new to her. Often times the reality of exciting or scary things never did hit her. She was just like that. She grabbed her bag and slipped on her shoes. Nope, not Converse. Everybody else wore Converse, so Therese didn't. No, they were just plain black tennishoes. She glanced at the time on the cable box and her eyes widened. Dashing past the kitchen before her mother could even blink, she threw open the front door and came face-to-face with her two best friends.
"Oh, hey Valmina. Hi Camiola." (Don't make fun of my names, bitches!) "Hi" they said simultaniously. The three of them started walking down the road towards their school. "So, are you guys excited about the concert tonight?" Camiola asked. Therese answered first. "Yeah, it didn't hit me until this morning, but I'm pretty excited." "What about you, Valmina?" Camiola questioned. Valmina pushed her hair out of her face. "A little." "Oh come on," Camiola said, "it's your birthday, you have to be more than a little excited." "Mmmm" Valmina replied. That was Valmina. Short, unemotional answers. (Why don't I take some time to describe the girls. Sorry for the torture, the good parts are coming soon.)
We'll start with Therese. She had been 18 since September. She had long, black hair. Her original color was blonde, but she had died it when she was 14. Her eyes, which she accencuated with black mascara, were a light gray in color, with darker gray "spokes" that were only noticable when you looked hard. She wasn't exactly anorexic skinny, but she wasn't really overweight. She did have a little healthy fat here and there, but she didn't mind, and neither did anybody else, so it was cool. Her favorite colour, though it's unimportant, was jade green, and no, that doesn't fucking mean that she loved earthy colors, no matter how many people will say that. She was about 5'9, the tallest out of the three. She was always joking around and being funny, and insisted that people call her 'Master' instead of Therese. She liked Tre Cool the best out of the three members of Green Day.
Camiola was the oldest. She had turned 18 the summer before. She had brown hair which she had streaked with blonde. Her eyes, which had a small amount of black eyeliner around them, were light blue, with dark blue outlining them. She was the one with the fit body. She played soccer and basketball, and swam on the school team. She also happened to be a health nut, and critisized the others when they insisted on eating pizza instead of carrots. Her favorite color was lilac purple, again, unimportant, but oh well. She was 5'7, only a little smaller than Therese. She was the girliest of the three, and had less black in her wardrobe. She was known for being very sweet and polite, even to her enemies. Her favorite member of Green Day was Mike Dirnt.
Valmina was the baby. Tomorrow was her 18th birthday, which is why the girls bought tickets to the Green Day show in the first place. She had full, shoulder-length hair. It was a very dark, very deep red color. In fact, it was so dark and deep, it almost had a maroon tint to it. Her eyes were jade green, with dark green outlining them. Also, if you looked hard, you would notice one or two brown spots in each eye. She wore the heaviest makeup; a combination of black eyeliner, mascara, and eyeshadow. She also decked herself completely in black clothing. She was about 5'4, the shortest of the three, and her favorite color was silver. She was the one that people commented on as being "deathly skinny", she only weighed about 95 pounds. But, despite the fact that she was the thinnest, she still had curves. Her bones were just big like that. She was often feared by her peers. The combination of dark makeup, dark clothing, deep red hair, and being very skinny, gave her a very frightening look, even though she was by far the prettiest out of the three. Not to say that the others were ugly or anything, they were actually quite attractive, and never had trouble getting boyfriends, but Valmina was the one who stopped people in their tracks when they first layed eyes on her. But despite her dark looks, she was very loyal, and was always the first and strongest when things went wrong. There, now we can get back to the story.
When the girls reached the school, they all headed their seperate ways, as their lockers were in different parts of the school. The first bell rang. Therese had band first, Camiola had PE, and Valmina had art. The first few classes went normally, and when the lunch bell rang, the girls met up to discuss their plans "So, here it is." Camiola started. "I'm going to pick you guys up at 5:00 this evening, and you will have your things packed. Let me repeat that. You-will-have-your-things-packed-and-ready-to-go-when-I-arrive." she said very slowly. "Got that?" Therese rolled her eyes. "Yes, mother." she said. "Good." Camiola replied. "I've booked us rooms at a hotel about a mile from the arena, so we don't have to worry about that. We'll stay there for the weekend, and on Sunday at noon we're going to leave for Colorado again." The concert was taking place in Utah, as it was the only show they were playing on Valmina's birthday. Once all of this was settled, they headed down to the cafeteria to eat lunch. At the end of the day, the girls met up at the school entrance and headed home.
Therese headed upstairs and dumped her things onto her bed. She went to her closet and grabbed her brown suitcase, throwing it onto the floor. She then proceeded to throw everything on her floor into the suitcase, without bothering to fold it or even really look at what she was packing. She then went to her bathroom and grabbed the essentials, stuffing them into the suitcase as well. When she was all done, she looked at the clock. 3:55. "Great, I've got an hour and a half and nothing to do." She went to her radio and turned it to her favorite station, singing along to her favorite bands. After this got boring, she turned the station, searching for the most humorous stations she could find. She went through the pop, country, and Irish Rock stations by 4:50. She was in the middle of trying to copy the migrane-inducing opera singers when she heard a honk outside of her window. She looked at the clock. 4:57. She grabbed her suitcase and a sweater and headed downstairs. In the hallway, she ran into her mother, who seemed to believe that this was the end of the world and that she would never see her daughter again. "Mom, I can't breathe!" She yelled through her mother's embrace. "Oh, sweetie, I'm gonna miss you!" "I'll miss you too, mom." All of a sudden her mother's face became stern. "If I find out that you've done anything wrong while you're gone, I'll ground you for a year." "Mom, I'd just move out." Therese retorted. Her mother pulled a look of pure terror. Giggling, Therese headed out to the car. "Have fun, sweetie! Call me!" her mom practically shrieked out the front door. "Goodbye mom!"
Once inside the car, Camiola started driving towards the highway. "What took you so long?" Camiola asked. "My mom seems to have the idea that I'm never coming back home. I practically had to throw her off of me." Therese replied. "Oh. My mom just told me to stay safe and make good choices. She's ridiculous." They all chuckled a little at this comment. Therese noticed that Valmina hadn't said a word the whole time. She gave her a playful punch on the arm. "Hey, what's up with you?" "What the fuck is your problem!?!" Valmina screamed, holding her arm. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize I hit you so hard." Therese apologized. "No, I just have a very painful bruise there." Valmina stated. "Oh. How did you get a bruise?" Therese questioned. Valmina hesitated. "Uh, I fell of my bed this morning and, uh, hit my, um, bedside table." "Oh," Therese said, "smoothe move, Exlax." She tried to laugh it off, despite her suspicions. After that the ride to Utah was pretty silent. Camiola turned on the radio, trying to make the ride more interesting, though it helped little.
When they arrived at the hotel, Camiola and Therese were practically out cold, even though it was only 10:00. Valmina almost had to drag them inside to the information desk. "Hello, welcome to the Marriot, how may I be of service?" said the overly enthusiastic employee. Since Camiola and Therese were too tired to speak, Valmina took charge. "We need to get our keys and find our rooms. And it would be nice if we could get someone to grab our bags for us." The woman took a moment to study the girl's gorgeous, dark features before fulfilling the requests. A few minutes later, Valmina was sitting in her surprisingly posh room, looking for some pajamas. She pulled out some sweats and a tank top and headed for the bathroom, ready for a shower. She stripped away her clothes and headed towards the shower, but stopped in front of the mirror. She turned from side to side, examining herself. Her ribs almost poked out of her tiny stomach. The bones in her arms and thighs were easily visible, and her fingers were long and bony. She observed the bruises on her arms and back. Head hanging, she walked over to the shower and got in.
Valmina sat in her room with her damp hair in her face. Suddenly, she heard a commotion on the other side of her ceiling, and the sound of something breaking on her balcony. Frightened, she went to see what it was. When she opened the door, she found a broken television on the floor of her balcony. Walking over to the rail, and around the television, she looked up, and was met with two faces she never expected to see, shining with glee.
