Billie Joe and Adie...A Bond That Will Rock On Forever!, chapter 9
It happened on that day. It was a typical "end of summer" day. The sun was giving its last pond of heat and the cool autumn breezes were setting in. Billie Joe had been spending the summer in Minneapolis with his girlfriend, Adrienne. Mike and Tre had also found new flames (Tre had originally come with a girlfriend, but during the course of the summer she had given up and gone home to go back to collage) and apart from the rats and the occasional out-burst of bad odors, life was getting quiet happy in the squat. Every night was a party and most nights Adrienne would spend the night at the squat with Billie.
Billie was staring out of the large canvas window at the back of the dining room, everyone, including Adie, was still out at a bar, waiting for night to come, but Billie had decided to come home early to get ready for the gig later on that night. He was flicking through the fat note book he had bought to write songs. It was almost full. Even before they came to Minnesota Green Day already had a decent collection of songs, but now they had was more than they needed! Billie had written another song about Adrienne that morning which he thought was pretty good! At that moment the front door opened and Adrienne walked in, surprising Billie.
"Hey!" she smiled, walking across the room and sitting next to Billie on the window seat. "It's not like you to be sitting by the window looking all soulful," she joked.
Billie smiled and grabbed her ass, she jumped and leaned her head against Billie's shoulder and her put his arms around her and hugged her close.
"I love you," he said, kissing her neck.
"I love you too," smiled Adie. It was at that second the phone rang, for a moment Billie and Adie ignored it and carried on being absorbed in themselves, but eventually Adie sighed and let go of Billie so he could go and pick up the phone.
"It's probably the guys calling to remind you about the show," she sighed, pulling away from Billie. He looked at her sympathetically as if to say "typical!" and picked up the phone.
"Hello?" said Billie.
"Hey, you've gotta come back Billie," said the voice. Billie frowned with confusion; didn't people say who they were anymore?
"What? Who's speaking," continued Billie. Adrienne was sitting across the room lighting up a joint and smiling at Billie.
"It's Larry! You know, your manager?" he said, Billie's heart sank down to his stomach and his face went grey. Adie could tell something was wrong and gave Billie a reassuring smile.
"Listen, you've got to come back sometime! You need to make another album, 39 smooth had sold out and people are wondering where you are and why you haven't started to make more albums?" lectured Larry.
And that's where it started..... Billie, Tre and Mike were going to have to leave Minnesota and go back to Oakland for this to work. And that meant leaving Adrienne. After and long talk Billie Joe put the phone down, took a deep breath and went back over to sit by Adrienne, he looked at her and tears pricked his eyes.
"Are you OK?" she asked, suddenly feeling sad herself.
"No..." said Billie, blankly holding Adrienne's and looking at the floor. "I've gotta go back to Oakland."
There was a silence and eventually Adie said, "Well I guess it's going to be hard to see each other. But if this is what you've gotta do then...." She looked really sad but managed not to break into tears; they were both being so grown up about it, which was not like them at all. And they sat there in each others arms for hours.
Later on that night Billie played the gig with Green Day. He had privately told the guys before the show and they had taken the news quiet well, to them Minnesota was just another stop off on their tour and they weren't in love the way Billie and Adie were. Despite the mood drain, they played one of the best shows ever! (Adrienne sat quietly at a table at the back of the club drinking and talking to people). Once the show was over Billie got his microphone and announced the news. Billie spent the last night in Adie's new apartment, they weren't going to break up, it was going to be more of an "on the phone relationship" so they wanted to be with each other as much as possible for the last 24 hours. The next morning everyone said their goodbyes and the guys set off on the long journey back to Oakland to record their second album.
