Kiss the Demons out of my Dreams, chapter 19

I woke up on the park bench. It was still dark, but I could sense that Carrie wasn't there with me. I suddenly got scared, scared that I had lost her again. I got up and looked around before I saw her on the swings. She was swinging slightly with her head down, playing with something in her fingers. As I got closer, I saw it was something gold. The chain that I hadn't taken off since I had found it. "Um...hey, Carrie," I said, sitting on the swing next to her.

"Oh, hey, Billie. I was just thinking. You fell asleep," she said.

"Sorry about that, but I guess it all just kinda caught up with me," I blushed. She handed me the chain.

"I remember this. You gave it to me. You...you still have it?" she asked.

"Yeah. I found it in a drawer a couple weeks ago and put it on." I took it sheepishly. She smiled hesitantly. I reached over and fastened it around her neck where it had once belonged. Then I put my face close to hers, resting my forehead against her's. I looked into the green eyes that so perfectly matched my own. We kissed for a while before I pulled away, my breath ragged. "Carrie, why did you leave me?" I asked her gently. I saw pain flood into her eyes and she looked away.

"I'm so sorry, Billie. I had to get away from the place where my parents used to live, and you guys were doing so well. I couldn't of asked you to come. Also, I had to do something. It was terrible what I did. After that, I just couldn't face you. I was ashamed," Carrie whispered.

"But I loved you. And when you just left, I..." I trailed off. "Never mind. All that matters is that i found you." I kissed her again and stood up. We walked down the street to the concert hall, adn I took her hand. All the familiar feelings of emptiness went away, and I felt happy.

Almost everyone had left by the time we got back to the hall. I held her hand tightly as we went backstage, afraid that if I let go, she would disappear again. I told her to wait in the dressing room while I wnt to find Mike and Tre. "Tre! Mike!" I shouted, running all around the backstage. I finally found them in make-up.

"Billie! Where the hell have you been?" Mike cried.

"You guys! It's...it's her! She...Carrie! She's here. She came to the show, and...now...now she's in the dressing room. I found her," I stumbled.

"What? Carrie?" Tre jumped up.

"C'mon," I said, running out the door. It was Mike's voice, hard and icy, that made me stop.

"Billie. You just found the girl that left you without reason. The girl who basically took a year of your life away from you. She left you fucked up and broken-hearted. Now you're running back to her, just like that?" he said. I had never heard Mike talk like this. Usually, he was the calm one. I turned back to face him. His words hit me, and I felt like someone had slapped me across the face. It all sunk in. Carrie. The one who had killed me. She had killed my heart, at least. Mike was right. I couldn't just run back to her now. As much as I loved her, things had changed between us.
