How The New Girl Got to Play with Sweet Children, chapter 2
Mike:
The next day, in the morning Mike considered wearing a paper bag over his head, but then he changed his mind. It'd make it too obvious.
At lunch, Mike ate silently, trying to ignore Billie and Lola's love talk.
Just as he decided he had enough, a very pretty, tall girl walked over to their table.
"H-hi. Can I sit here? E-everywhere else is full." She asked nervously.
"Go for it." Billie said. Mike was astonished that Billie even heard the question.
She sat down and-as if she were in a cage full of sleeping lions-nervously took a bite of her pizza.
"What's your name?" Mike asked, trying to be friendly.
"Tasha." She said just loud enogh for Mike to hear.
"How old are you?"
"15." She replied in the same quiet voice.
"Why are you so quiet?" Mike knew it was going a little far, but he wanted to see her reaction. She didn't have one. "Sorry."
"Mike, if my cousin, Tasha here, wanted to talk, she would talk, trust me. Apparently she doesn't want to talk, so shut up."
"Thanks cuz." Tasha said gratefully.
"Oh don't mind Mike." Lola said grinning. "He's just a big softie."
"Hey! That's-" Mike started.
"Getting personal, Mike?" Lola taunted.
"No, going a little far."
"Not after yesterday." Lola replied.
"And what did I do yesterday?!?" Mike exclaimed, then quickly changed his mind. "Never mind. I don't wanna hear it."
"I'm sure she doesn't either." Billie put in.
Tasha blushed.
"My name is Billie Joe," Billie introduced everyone. "And you've already met your cousin, and, um, Sir. Talksalot over there is Mike."
"Yeah, well 'Sir. Talksalot' has to get his ass moving if he wants to finish his histroy report." Mike said as he left.
"See ya." Tasha said cheerfully.
Mike sat in the library, thinking about Tasha. I wonder why she's so shy. Mike wondered while putting the finishing touches on his report.
Finally it was finished, so he packed up his things and went back down to his locker, only to find Billie and Lola making out in front of Billie's locker which was right beside Mike's.
"G-d, you guys, get a room!" Mike exclaimed in disgust.
"We plan to, Mike." Lola retorted.
Billie agreed by kissing her again.
Just then, Tasha walked by.
She grimaced at the sight and turned her attention to Mike.
"Come downtown with me?"
"Gladly." Mike agreed.
As Mike and Tasha walked to the exit, they walked past Lola and Billie.
"Hallway Humpers." Tasha whispered jealously, once they were out of earshot.
"Hey, I'm sorry about that earlier." Mike apologized.
"Oh that's ok. I usually talk alot but my dog died yeaterday, so..." Her voice trailed off.
"Oh well then I'm sorry anyways."
There was a long silence, then Mike decided to talk.
"You're jealous of Lola, aren't you?" He blurted.
"Now why would I be jealous of my cousin? She's got a hot boyfriend, she's practically rich, she always got everything she ever wanted, no, I'm not jealous of her." Tasha said sarcastically.
Mike followed Tasha into the nearby New Orleans pizza place.
"Hey. You already ate."
"It's not for me." Tasha replied simply.
"Your brother? Sister?"
"I do have a brother, but the last time I saw him was when we were both nine or ten."
"Hey same here. Except I had a sister. So who are you buying for?"
Tasha giggled.
"You need this more than I do."
"No!" Mike protested. "It's your money! Do what you want with it!"
"I am." Tasha giggled again. "You only ate french fries. You gotta be hungry!"
"Well, I am, but french fries is pretty much the only theng the caf has that's veg and I'm not one for salads." Mike said.
"Oh." Tasha said, stepping up to the counter. "Do you have anything vegetarian?" She asked the lady at the till.
"We have salads." She suggested.
"Anything else?"
The lady shook her head.
"Oh. Well thanks anyways." Tasha said and left. She turned to Mike"How bout in there? You like potato chips?" She pionted to a convenience store.
Mike nodded.
Tasha entered the store and grabbed two bags of sour cream & onion chips, thought for a bit, then put one bag back.
"No, that's fine." Mike said as he reached for the bag the same time that Tasha did and her small hand ended under his big, boney one. "Sorry." He took his hand back.
"That's ok," Tasha said dreamily, than broke out of her daydream. "I better pay for these." She faked a laugh, hoping he hadn't heard her tone of voice. He had and he was looking at her funny as she payed the guy at the till.
