They Changed My Life, chapter 13
Mike was amazed that everyone was just sitting on their ass while Estelle ran through the streets of Berkeley alone.
"I'm going after her," he said, zipping up his jacket. "You guys should help." He glared at the threesome.
Laurie snorted, and said, "Actually, I was thinking of going home."
Mike didn't know what the hell she was doing here in the first place. "Go ahead," Mike strode out the front door, worried as hell about Estelle.
Tré stood up and said, "We'll come with you. Billie Joe will take Laurie home, and in the meanwhile, we can look for Estelle. Billie can meet up with us later."
Billie Joe shot out the door with Laurie in tow. "We've got to hurry."
Mike smiled at his friends, relieved that they had come to their senses.
I looked behind me. Traffic was still flowing normally, which was a good thing. The rain had provided a screen. Besides, I didn't want to be stopped. I stepped closer to the edge. All of the previous fear was gone now. All I wanted was for the emotional and physical pain to go away. As I closed my eyes and took one last deep breath, I heard someone shouting my name frantically. I saw a tall figure coming at me fast, and I tried to throw myself over the edge. Strong arms encircled me, and drew me back. We both fell to the ground with a thump.
"What the hell were you thinking?" he whispered into my ear, still holding m close. "What the hell were you thinking?
