They Changed My Life, chapter 15
I pulled away from Mike and stood up.
"Billie Joe, listen to me" I tried to explain.
"Just shut up!" he roared.
Then I got angry. "Why?!" I yelled. "We didn't fucking do anything! Even if we had, how would it be any different from you having Laurie over, huh? Tell me that!"
I saw anger flash in Billie Joe's eyes, and I was sure that he was going to hit me for a second, but he turned away. Quickly, I realized how stupid this argument was.
"Oh, Billie Joe, why are we fighting?" I cautiously touched his shoulder.
"Nothing happened between us, man," Mike said consolingly.
Billie Joe tensed, and I pulled away. He turned to me, his features tightened with anger.
"It's different because neither Laurie nor I were naked, hugging each other," he said quietly. Then Billie Joe punched Mike in the face as hard as he could and stormed out of the room. Mike kneeled on the floor, clutching his face.
"I think that fucker gave me a black eye," he groaned.
I quickly threw some clothes on and helped Mike to the kitchen table. Tré was at the coffee pot, pouring some into four mugs. As I pulled ice out of the freezer for Mike, Tré casually asked what was wrong with Billie Joe. I quickly explained that he had walked in on me and Mike hugging, half-naked.
"Oh," Tré said, putting one of the mugs back. "I guess he won't be coming back from Jason's house anytime soon then."
I handed Mike the ice and looked at Tré. "He went to Jason's?" I asked.
"Yeah, but what I want to know I why you and Mike were half-naked together," Tré said slyly.
Tears sprang into my eyes. Billie and Mike fighting was all my fault. Tré saw the distress on my face and got serious. I looked at Mike and he nodded. It was time to tell my story. When all of us were seated around the table with steaming mugs of coffee in hand, I sighed deeply and began my story.
