They Changed My Life, chapter 5

There were a bunch of preppy girls crowded around the doorway with their Cro-Magnon-looking boyfriends. They were blocking our way, so I tried to push through. They stayed right where they were, so I irritably asked, "Could you move? I kind of need to get somewhere."
One of the girls stepped forward, dragging her human-sized accessory with her. Pushing her boobs back into her shirt because they had been perilously close to falling out, she asked, "Why? So you can disrupt another class with your little "Goth" act, distracting people because you're talking to the class pot-head?"
She raised her eyebrow triumphantly, putting her hands on her hips, thinking that she had won. I gave her a flattering, completely fake smile.
"You're right."
I heard Billie Joe behind me exclaim, "What?!"
I turned around and winked at him and said, "Really! Omigosh, you, like, totally saved me from making a HUGE mistake! I can't believe I actually lowered my standards that much!"
"Well, goo-"
"No-wait! I'm not done! I want to totally learn to be more like you! If only you could teach me to be a two-dollar whore, I'd be off to a great start!"
While they were still caught off-guard, I grabbed Billie Joe's arm and pulled him through the throng of preps. The one chick was still spluttering. As I pushed through, one of the girls caught my eye. She looked a little different than the rest because she looked a little uncomfortable, like she was new. Unfortunatley, I knew her well. She looked at me and glared. I seemed to be getting a lot of that today. Halfway down the hallway, I released Billie Joe. He looked at me, his face breaking into a grin.
"Oh shit! That was awesome!!! You're my hero of the day!" Then he laughed again.
I smiled, his grin being infectious, and said, "Why? Because I told off that slut?"
"Kind of," he said. "But especially for standing up for yourself. Not many people around here can do that for themselves."
We were standing in front of my locker. We had to move if we wanted to make it to class before the bell, but neither of us really cared. Billie Joe touched my shoulder for a brief second and said, "Later."
Running down the hallway, he called, "Remember-lunch! I'll look for you-okay?"
"Right," I answered.
As I made my way to History, I briefly reflected on my day. I had had some run-ins with people, but so far I had met three really cool guys. Just as I thought that, I saw Tre', which I still thought was an awesome name. He was walking ahead of me, so calling his name, I ran to catch up with him.
"Hey there-what class are you going to?" he asked.
"History," I replied.
"BUCKOCK!!!" he exclaimed, acting as though his arms were wings, scaring me. He laughed and said, "Yeah-me too in other words."
We walked down the hallway in silence for awhile, and then Tre' asked, "Do you want to hang out with me and my friends at lunch? Just don't tell anyone I asked, though. That might make me look nice."
Even though I regretted turning him down, I remembered Billie Joe's offer.
"Sorry," I said. "I'd love too, but somebody else already asked, and I don't feel like making any more enemies today."
"That's cool. I just thought I'd ask."
We made it to class before the bell rang, surprisingly, and I sat next to Tre'. Shortly after, the teacher dismissed us to lunch. I know better than to eat school food, so I had brought my lunch. This way, I'm convinced I'll live longer. Tre' and I walked into the cafeteria together, and I looked for Billie Joe. Tre' ran off, looking for his friends, leaving me alone in the bustling cafeteria. Looking around once more, I saw someone waving frantically. Recognizing this someone as Billie Joe, I struggled through the sea of bodies. Finally reaching the table, I had a pleasant surprise. Sitting next to Billie Joe was Mike, Tre' and a few other people.
"Mike! Tre'!" I said, a grin spreading across my face.
"Hey!" they both said, smiling.
"Get tired of your 'lunch buddies' already?" Tre' questioned.
"Not yet. I guess you guys are my lunch buddies."
I turned to Billie Joe and had another surprise. This one wasn't so nice, though, and made my breath catch up in my throat.
