They Changed My Life, chapter 7
She lurched, the eyeliner going into her eye, and then making a thick black line down her face. Erin burst out laughing, and we ran for the cafeteria. It felt good to laugh with someone, to feel free. "What was up with the Billie Joe comment?" I asked Erin.
"Who knows? She thinks he belongs to her or something. She can't see that everyone hates her. Most of us are just too nice to tell her...heh. She probably just felt threatened." We sat back down with the boys and proceeded to talk about really stupid (but really funny!) things. After a while, I saw Laurie. Thankfully, she didn't sit with us again. The rest of the school day passed pretty uneventfully, and as soon as school let out, I headed to where I thought home was. I walked past the student parking lot, and I saw someone leaning against a beat-up car. Billie Joe waved at me enthusiastically, and I walked over to him.
"I think you missed your bus," he said, pointing to the buses pulling away from the school.
"Yeah-I decided to walk. I didn't really feel like riding the bus again, so I decided to walk."
"Where do you live?" When I told him, he said, "Damn-that's one of the nicer parts of town. I'll walk with you a while, if that's okay with you," he quickly added. I grabbed his arm and asked,
"Would you really?" He laughed.
"I take it you don't really remember where you live-eh?" he said. I smiled sheepishly and shrugged. We headed in the direction of my house, and not a minute later, we were joined by Mike and Tre'. I had been showing him my lucky pick because it turned out that we both played guitar.
"Oooh-look at me!" Tre' said, running ahead. "I'm grooovy!" he pretended to strum an imaginary guitar. I laughed, running after him.
"Give it back!" Unfortunately, I paid no attention to where I was going, and wasn't it just my luck that I would run into the group of preps I had had trouble with before? As I felt a body being knocked into mine, I spun around. I was staring into the eyes of the girl that had looked uncomfortable. I was staring into the eyes of my older sister. My heart sinking, I stepped back. I knew this wasn't going to be pretty.
"Why don't you pay attention to where you're going, you little bitch?" she snarled. Anger flared up inside of me, and she looked at Mike, Tre' and Billie Joe. "Hanging out with more stoners, I see. Didn't that not end well the last time you did it?" She was about to go on, I could see that clearly, so I did the first thing that popped into my head. I punched her in the face as hard as I could.
