Green Eyes, chapter 3

She opened her eyes, expecting light to come at her blindingly but instead, saw only darkness. And she immediately panicked, "Where the hell am I?" She tried to ask, but her throat felt dry and her voice came out hoarse.

What was going on?

"She woke up? Oh thank god... " Stevie froze, who was that... ?

"She's awake?" Tre?

"Yeah, come see." Mike? What in the hell was going on? Feeling for a rim or bar of some sort to push herself up she felt her hand smack something large.

"Careful Stevie, don't ruin the equipment." A voice teased. She twitched slightly, equipment?

"Stevie, hun, are you okay?" She definitely knew that voice, Brittney. She managed to shake her head no, but immediately regretted it when a white hot flash of pain shot throughout her head.

"OH GOD!" She cried, reaching up to clutch her head. She felt a hand on her shoulder.

"Shh, Steve, take it easy. You just got out of major surgery... relax."

Major surgery... ? Now why would she need that? Feeling around she felt a hand grab hers and she relaxed a bit, it was Mike. "Mike... where am I?" She inquired scratchily. He leaned down and kissed the top of her head.

"You're in the hospital." An icy feeling swept her, begging for her to remember what happened. But she wouldn't, she didn't want to.

"Why?"

"Stevie... you're eyes got cut with glass... " He seemed to be having trouble finding the words he needed to say, was he trying to protect her?

"I don't want to be treated differently, Mike," She hissed.

"Aw, Steve, I know. But... it's hard to... to say... "

"Mike, just tell her... it'll be harder to hear from the doctors." She was getting annoyed now, why wouldn't they just god damn tell her what she needed to hear.

She heard him take a deep breath and she felt it brush her hair a little bit, "Stevie... when your eyes got cut, it hit a major part. They... the doctors... they're not sure if you... " He cleared his throat.

"If I... ?"

"They're not sure if you'll ever be able to see again." That icy feeling returned and her breath caught in her throat.

"Stevie... if you need to talk... " She cut Brittney off.

"How long have I been here?" She sat straighter, so she might be blind? No big deal. Military girls didn't cry over loss.

But you cried for him...

"You've been in the hospital for two weeks." Two weeks, it gave him plenty of time to return. "But they said you need to-"

"Where's Billie?" She questioned, again interrupting.

"Huh?"

"Where's Billie Joe? Did he come back?" She swallowed the lump in her throat and clutched Mike's hand when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"It's only Tre."

She turned her head and wet her lips, "Where is he... ?" She whispered her voice cracking.

"Um... Brit, get her some water?" Stevie didn't hear a reply, so she figured she must have nodded.

"Stevie, we don't know where he is. We haven't heard from him, we didn't even know he left." Tre murmured, she let the feeling take over.

"Promise you won't leave me."

"I promise."

"He lied... " She choked, her lower lip quivering, "He lied to me. He promised not to leave." She was shaking, how could he?

"Stevie, what are you talking about? What's going on? What happened?"

Tears welled up in her eyes and she let out a cry of pain, it stung. "Oh god," She breathed, squeezing her eyes shut.

"Stevie, what happened?" Mike asked her, sitting down in the chair next to the bed.

"Billie... he-he told me that he had gotten a letter from Roger O'Mally."

"The governor?" If she hadn't been so tired and feeling sick she would have laughed, Tre could lighten up almost anything.

"Former governor." She corrected, "Remember? Billie ruined his chance at winning when he told the media what Roger did to me."

"Oh yeah... "

"But anyway, he got a letter from Roger asking him to come to his house to 'discuss' something. I told Billie that he shouldn't, that man has a temper and would have no reason not to hurt him. Billie said he'd think about it."

"Then what happened?"

She felt her cheeks grow warmer, "Well... we... we kind of... " She let her sentence trail, hoping they'd figure it out. She really didn't want to go into full detail.

"Ohhhhhhhhh... " Tre said, and then giggled. She laughed quietly, but it triggered a coughing fit.

"Tre!" Mike accused, sighing.

"It's-its fine. I was laughing, because the sad thing is, Tre only got it because of his dirty mind." That sent both of them laughing.

"So you guys... yeah... then what happened?"

She took in a breath, "I made him promise me he wouldn't leave me... " The tears stung again, "And... I woke up... a-and he w-was g-gone... " Silence swept over them, two weeks and he hadn't returned. Truth seemed to dawn them and she was sobbing.

Anguish stabbed her, the truth was always so bitter.

But truth could sometimes be a lie.

The sensation's overwhelming
Give me a long kiss goodnight and everything will be alright
