Three's A Crowd, chapter 1
Summer lay with her head on Tre's chest. It was so quiet, not even Tre was talking. She giggled to herself as her head rose up and down as he breathed.
"What's so funny?" He asked her, laughing slightly himself.
"It's nothing." She replied settling back down. Tre stroked her hair softly as she closed her eyes. 'This is it' Tre thought 'this is what I wanted. ' He slowly sat up on the bed causing Summer to sit upright as well.
"You ok?" She asked him smoothing, down her dark hair.
"Yeah, everything's fine, it's just... " He paused for a while and frowned slightly.
"What?" Summer continued looking puzzled.
"Summer I need to ask you somethin', it's kinda important though." He said seriously. Summer looked a little worried. She wasn't used to Tre being serious. The two words didn't fit together.
"Tre you're scaring me! What is it?" She laughed.
"Summer, I've always loved you." He said looking deep into her eyes.
"Yeah, and I love you of course!" She replied running her hand down his arm.
"No, I mean I've always loved you. Even when you and Billie were together. Well... Ever since I first met you actually." He said smiling broadly.
"Well... But, why didn't you ever tell me then?" She asked slightly in shock.
"It wasn't the right time, there was always something goin' on. It was either you and Billie or somethin about Josh y'know. I just... I had to tell you that's all, since we're bein honest with each other." Summer smiled at him. She cupped his face with her hands and kissed him softly on the lips.
"You're the sweetest guy I've ever know, you know that Tre Cool?" He laughed and pulled her in for another kiss. Soon they were making out on the bed. He began to undo her pants when the bedroom door swung open. They both shot up as if they were two teenagers who'd just been caught by their parents.
"Oh, I uh... Sorry. Didn't know you guys were... Yeah um, I'll leave." Billie-Joe stammered before leaving the couple alone again. Tre looked at Summer and laughed aloud. Summer gave a slight smile but seemed uncomfortable by the sudden intrusion.
"Hey, you ok there?" Tre asked when Summer didn't laugh.
"What? Of course. I'm hungry, back in a sec." Summer got up and went to the kitchen leaving Tre alone and slightly confused as usual. Billie sat at the table with a cold beer in his hand. The other was rubbing the back of his neck as if he was suffering from whip-lash. He didn't look up as Summer entered the room. He took a casual swig of beer as she searched through the fridge for something edible. When she saw no reaction from him, she took her bottle of beer and placed it on his neck.
"Ahh!" He yelled out as the cold glass met his warm neck. Summer laughed hysterically as he realised what had just happened.
"Oh ok, you asked for it!" He challenged as he ran to the freezer.
"What are you doin?" She asked. Billie grabbed a hand full of ice and turned to Summer. He looked at her with a menacing look in his eye which made Summer realise that he would show no mercy. She didn't wait for him to move, she ran out of the kitchen and around to the other side of the couch for protection. Billie entered the room walking slowly, smirking to himself.
"You're not gonna get away that easily." He said with one hand on his hip whilst the other clasped the ice which was now dripping from his hand.
"Billie, don't be mean, I was only kidding!" She whined from behind the couch.
"Hey, don't start what you can't finish." He added moving closer to the couch. Before she could react, Billie had jumped over the couch and grabbed her by the waist. Summer let out a shriek as Billie pulled her down on to the couch.
"Billie, quit it!" She screamed as he pinned her arms down which were waving frantically. Billie just laughed as he pushed her on to her front and pulled at the back of her pants and shoved down the ice. Summer screamed again as Billie finally pulled back in hysterics.
"Hey! No fair!" She whined again.
"Aw, you poor baby!" Billie teased as he pulled her closer and gave her a hug. At this moment, Tre entered the room wondering what all the commotion was about. Summer pulled away from Billie and shot up to face him.
"Are you misbehaving children?" He asked wagging his finger at them both.
"No way, does that sound like us?" Billie asked smirking as he sat on the floor after being abandoned by Summer. Summer just looked to the floor seeming slightly embarrassed.
"Hm, well I'm gonna go out and get us some food. Pizza ok?" He asked them.
"Sounds good." Said Summer smoothing her hair over again. Tre walked straight out of the door. When he was gone, she shot a look at Billie who was still sprawled out on the floor.
"What?" He asked smiling. Summer rolled her eyes and headed for the bathroom. She knew what Tre would be thinking. It was always in the back of his mind, the way Billie and Summer look at each other sometimes as if they never broke up. He could never say anything to her though, he didn't dare risk losing her over jealously. That's what broke Billie and Summer up.
"C'mon Mike, pass me another slice before you demolish the rest." Summer teased as Mike's hand was just about to take another slice of pizza.
"Fine. I'd never dream of getting in the way of a woman and her pizza." He joked as he handed her a slice.
"Thank you." She said smiling broadly. She could always find a way of getting what she wanted. The four of them continued to make their way through three pizzas and several bottles of beer. 'Just like old times' Summer thought as she smiled to herself. She sat next to Mike at the square and slightly chipped old table which they'd all bought together. Tre sat opposite her, Billie beside him.
"Tre what are you doin down there?" She questioned him as he crawled around on the kitchen floor beside her as if he'd dropped something.
"Just a minute." He said still struggling. "Almost there."
"Ok, two guesses what he's up to down there." Suggested Billie-Joe resulting in a slap on the wrist from Summer. He laughed as she smirked back at him. When Summer realised that Tre hadn't yet returned to his upright position at the table, she looked down. There he was, on one knee smiling broadly up at her.
"Um, Tre... What are... "
"Wait, don't say anything, I've been practicing all day! Ok here goes." Summer felt her heart stop completely as she looked deep into his innocent eyes, so full of love and affection. It felt wonderful and terrible all at once.
"Summer, I know we've only been goin out for two months now but like I said, I've loved you from the first moment we met. And I don't wanna sound all corny like those guys in the movies but, I'm so in love with you and there's no one else on this earth who I'd rather be with. So... Will you marry me?" He pulled out a ring right in front of her. He had a smile on his face, not as broad as before because he was waiting for that all important answer. An answer that didn't come straight away.
"I... Tre I.. Oh my god." She stuttered nervously.
"I need um... I need some air." She managed to say. She leapt from the table and ran out of the apartment leaving him in the same position on the floor. Billie and Mike just looked at each other completely speechless.
"Ah you know Summer, she's never liked surprises. She'll be back soon Tre don't worry." Mike tried to reassure his friend.
"Man, I'm so stupid. Why did I have to propose like this. Shit, it's just... I'm crazy bout her you guys." Tre said with emotion in his voice. He looked like he'd just been kicked in the stomach. Billie sat motionless trying not to look at Tre, he felt sick.
"Would you have done it like that Billie?" Tre asked his unusually silent friend.
"What? Why are you asking me?" He asked as if it was the most ridiculous question he ever could have asked him. Tre shrugged and walked off into the living room and switched on the TV.
"This is gonna be a fun night." Mike said trying to lighten the mood. Billie didn't respond.
"Actually I'm gonna go out, I'e got something to do, I won't be long." Mike nodded as he let his friend pass.
He walked through the deserted streets with his hands in his pockets. Every now and then he lifted up a hand to run through his hair. He looked up at the sky and at the stars. 'What the fuck are you guna do now?" He asked himself. 'There's nothing you can do, it's over. No, no its not, she didn't even say yes, in fact she practically said hell no. ' He was going out of his mind. He felt powerless to stop what was happening, yet he felt that all hope was not lost at this point. He stopped as he reached the river. Surely enough she was there, sat on the bench with her legs crossed and her hands placed freely in her lap. She looked behind her to see him. There was a short pause although nothing was said. She then returned her glance to the river. He walked over and sat down next to her.
"What a night." He finally said.
"Yeah." She replied vaguely. "Certainly unpredictable and... " She paused.
"And what?" He asked her. Summer played with her shoe laces.
"I don't know, fill in the blank."
"Ok um, kinda dumb?" He offered with raised eyebrows.
"How do you mean?" She asked frowning at him.
"Well, it's just you've only been dating for like two months and all of a sudden it's like 'Hey Summer let's get married! '" He said. He sounded pretty serious to Summer. She thought it might have been a bit of a joke before but he obviously meant it.
Summer's POV:
'Kinda dumb? ' Ok I know me and Tre have only been together for two months but we could be totally in love for all he knows. Why's he being so serious about it? I thought we'd just laugh it off as always, but I guess I was wrong. And why does he keep looking at me like that. Like he wants to say something but he just won't. It's not like Billie to be stuck for words, I normally can't shut him up about Tre and his crazy ideas. Strange. I guess he's not the only one acting weird. Don't get me wrong, I really care about Tre I really do but... I don't wanna marry him! I seriously never saw that one coming. Shit, what am I gonna tell him? If I say no he'll think I don't love him. I wonder if he's noticed that whenever he says 'I love you' I never say it back. Maybe he just imagines that I have. No, Tre's not like that, but he's sure as hell not acting like himself.
Billie's POV:
'Kinda dumb', ok I know this is gonna lead to tons more questions. Why the fuck did I say that? Of all the words I could have used to finish off that sentence. Dumb-ass. So what do I say? Do I tell her what I really think, or what she wants to hear? Sometimes I hate being me. I better say something quick, she's just sat there staring at me with those big brown eyes, oh god this is so fucking unfair. I wanna die!
"It's just... " He began slowly.
"Just what?" She asked again getting impatient.
"Ok, can you promise me that you won't hate me for saying this though?" Summer frowned.
"Sure Billie, just say what you think. How can I hate you for that?" She said.
"Ok... I don't think you and Tre belong together. Not just the marriage stuff, it's just the whole... You two being... Together, it's.. Well, kinda weird I guess."
"Weird for who?" She asked him. He looked away from her and got up from the bench.
"It's not like a have a problem with you dating guys as such, it's just that I don't think you and Tre suit each other as a couple. You're uh, so different ya know?" Summer frowned.
"Different? How are me and Tre so different Billie?" She asked him as she got up from the bench to face him. He scratched his neck and looked away again.
"Well I duno, it's the whole, thing ya know like you're... And Tre's.. Well, just Tre."
"Why do you have such a problem with me and Tre?" She asked bluntly. Billie was surprised by this out-right question. At first, he didn't know how to answer it.
"What? I don't have a problem with you and Tre, that's crazy! I'm happy for you guys I really am. I fact.. Why don't you get married, it makes sense ya know. I mean he's so in love with you and you love him right?" He asked looking into her eyes making her uncomfortable.
"Well I'm glad you're ok with it Billie-Joe." She walked off straight past him.
"You don't love him Summer, you never have!" He shouted after her. Summer just carried on walking.
Summer entered the apartment. The smell of pizza lingered in the air. The lights were all out. 'How long was I out for? ' She asked herself feeling puzzled that she was the last one up. Well... Second from last because Billie was still no where to be seen. She looked at the clock. It was 1am. 'Weird' she thought. After she'd finished in the bathroom she slowly opened the door to her bedroom where they both slept. He was lying on his back with his eyes closed on top of the sheets. Summer walked over to him and climbed on to the bed. She sat on top of him with one leg either side of him.
"Hey." She said softly. Tre just smiled back at her.
Summer's POV:
Thank god, he doesn't seem mad or too upset. I was dreading coming back to see him tonight. Argh! Why don't I love him? I really want to. I do in my own way but, I want it to feel the way it did with Billie-Joe. This irresistible force between us that we couldn't hide, I guess I miss that sometimes. But it'll be ok with Tre, I'll make it ok.
"Sooo, what'cha been doin'?" She asked not knowing what to say. Tre just sighed and looked away.
"We need to talk about this, not just pretend it didn't happen like you normally do." Summer sat up when he said this. She got off of him and sat by his side with her legs crossed again.
"What did you mean by that?" She asked him annoyed.
"Nothing, it doesn't matter, we just need to talk that's all." He offered trying to avoid the subject.
"No, c'mon Tre, you obviously think that I avoid my true feelings so just say it." She said. Tre slowly began to explain.
"Well, I never really know what you're thinking and... Well we're going out, shouldn't we be able to tell each other anything?" Tre asked with his hand now on her leg. Summer didn't look at him. She didn't know what to say. It wasn't that she didn't trust Tre, she just didn't think he could handle the whole truth of how she felt. Telling him didn't seem right somehow even though he'd probably be better off in the long run. Summer let out a frustrated cry which made Tre jump and remove his hand from the top of her leg.
"Why is everyone of fucking keen to give me their opinions all of a sudden? I can handle my own life for fuck sake!" She cried, grabbing her dark hair in frustration. Tre got up from the bed to be with her.
"Hey, c'mon babe I didn't mean to upset you, I was just saying. But you're right, it doesn't matter what other people think, this is you're life and I love you because of who you are. Ok?" He stroked her face with one hand and put the other on her waist. Summer calmed down and laughed slightly.
"What's funny?" He asked her on hearing the laughter.
"You're always the one who keeps me sane. I don't think I really deserve you." She said looking into his eyes. She moved in and rested her head against him.
"Hey, don't say that. I don't deserve you." Summer knew that this wasn't entirely true.
"We're gonna be ok aren't we?" She asked him as the two stood together in the middle of his room.
"Of course we are. As long as we've got each other nothing can come between us, I won't let it. And hey who knows? Maybe one day we will get married," He laughed. Summer stood there silently for a moment.
"I wanna marry you." She said quietly.
"What?" He asked, surprised.
"You heard me. Let's do it, fuck it, let's get married" She said again. Tre pulled away but kept hold of her hands.
"Are you serious? This is really what you want?" He asked her still in shock. Summer laughed and kissed him on the lips.
Tre's POV:
Fuck! She said yes? This has gotta be a dream, it's too good to be real. I love her so much right now I don't know how to react! I wana tell the whole world. We're guna be so happy together, I can't wait. But I wonder what made her change her mind?
"What's so funny?" He asked her, laughing slightly himself.
"It's nothing." She replied settling back down. Tre stroked her hair softly as she closed her eyes. 'This is it' Tre thought 'this is what I wanted. ' He slowly sat up on the bed causing Summer to sit upright as well.
