Lost For Words, chapter 13
‘Okay he’s going to need surgery’, the doctor told Steph as she waited with Mike and Tre in the emergency room, of the hospital on East Ward.
‘How serious is it?’, Steph asked, her heart began to beat harder and faster at the sound of the word surgery. It was one she really couldn’t stand to hear.
‘Quite bad. If the knife went in any deeper it could have hit something important’, he explained. Steph nodded and looked behind the doctor to where Tre and Mike sat. They could tell by her eyes that it was more serious than any of them expected.
‘Is he going to be affected like, as in his movement or memory?’, she asked seriously, her eyes weakened and sorrow went thought them knowing now how serious the attack was.
‘Its still to early. The most you can now do is wait,’ the doctor told her, before he walked off. Steph walked the opposite way to where Mike and Tre sat in the waiting room.
‘How serious is it?’, Tre asked. Steph sat down on the seat between them, as her eyes started to water.
‘Very, they said it was to early to know if he’ll be affected anyway by it, but I think that’s just them using nice talk to try and push the idea out of my head that its not going to be okay’, Steph mumbled.
‘Steph its alright, Billie will get though this,’ Mike told her. That was the line that hit her the hardest. Almost instantly after he finished, she burst out into tears. Mike put his arm around her.
‘Sis its alright,’ He told her, trying to comfort her. it was no use though. The girls she had let in had caused this to happen. In her mind, Steph felt she was the one responsible for the accident. She sat silently for awhile, before speaking again.
‘Perhaps you guys should go home. You need your rest, I’ll stay here and wait, and I’ll give you guys any news as soon as I get it’, she told them. Mike looked down at her, about to say something. Tre stopped him and looked at him in a way that kind of meant, ‘Just leave her, if she wants this she must be right’.
The two boys got up and hugged Steph goodbye before leaving the hospital to go back home. Steph slumped down into the waiting room seats and slowly feel asleep, thinking how this could have ever possible happened.
*FLASH BACK*
The knife began to turn harder and harder ripping though the skin easier than it had been actually going in. The girl had a look of hatred in her eye, but also one of infatuation.
‘Billie just tell me you love me’, she said seductively trying to get him on her side. Billie fought back at the pressure. Every time he denied having feelings the knife seemed to turn reminding him of what he actually had. This mind took itself back to where he should have been.
‘I don’t’, he told her, mumbling the words, because of the pain he was in.
‘Billie, its alright you can love me. Your girlfriend isn’t being true or honest with you’, she told him, pushing ideas into his head.
‘No she is, I love her she is’, Billie screamed in pain as the knife sank in lower almost piercing his soul.
*FLASH BACK ENDS*
-Four Hours Later-
‘Miss, Miss’, a doctor said, shaking Steph to wake her up. Steph opened her eyes to see a female in a white coat standing over her.
‘Miss, you can go in and see him now. He’s not awake but he’s stable’, she told Steph. Steph jumped up as quickly as she could and rushing into the room. Billie lay there on the bed, with cords and tubes and machines attached to him. He still looked the same and he seemed to be hanging in there. She pulled out a chair, and brought it next to the bed and sat down on it. She picked up Billie’s hand and held it in hers for a while. The doctor who had woken her came walking into the room. She patted Steph on the head.
‘He’s going to be okay’, the doctor informed her. Steph looked at Billie and then at the doctor. She read the name tag: Stacie Munroe. Steph looked back at Billie and smiled sweetly.
‘He looks so peaceful and adorable’, Stacie said. Steph smiled, and the thoughts in her head started to turn from bad, back to good.
‘Yeah I know he does. He always is’, Steph told her. Stacie smiled.
‘Shouldn’t you be taking care of someone?’, Steph asked her, not to try or sound rude, but it was quite awkward having an adult in the room.
‘I’m on break actually at the moment. You must be Steph am I right?’, she asked. Steph nodded, putting Billie’s hand back down to rest beside him.
‘How did you know?’, Steph asked her curiously.
‘Billie asked for you, before he went under the anaesthetic’, Stacie told her, smiling. Steph smiled back. The thoughts were becoming better, and better.
‘You know its times like these, you have to let your feelings out, because you never know......it could be the last time you ever get to say them’, Stacie told her. Steph looked up at her.
‘What if the person is asleep and cant hear you?’, she asked inquisitively.
‘They may not be able to hear you, but it is recorded in a part of their brain. You should try it’, she told Steph before she got up and left the room, closing the door behind her. Steph thought about it for a moment and then decided to go with what Stacie had told her, for all she knew it could have been the last chance she got to speak to him.
‘OMG I feel so stupid saying this, 'cause I know you can’t hear me’, Steph said aloud. She looked down at Billie. He still looked as peaceful as he had before. but I’ll try anyways... well i found out everything from Tre before, and well, I guess I’m kinda disappointed, but I would have probably done the same thing if I was in your place....this feels so stupid...but I guess, I don’t know since you've keep flirting or what ever, that you might actually like these girls, so I’m gonna like, leave you until you can get our mind figured out... or maybe that’s me, but just remember that I’ll always love you and, you'll always be my BJ, no one......’, Steph stopped she could go on any further. She walked out of the hospital room and ran home, trying to forget all she had just said..
