Lost For Words, chapter 3
`Ahh hi Mike', Tre said, feeling around the wall for the light switch.
`So what are you looking at?', Mike asked, seriously. A look of pain shot over his face as he moved his arm.
`Mikey, you alright?', Steph asked worryingly.
`Yeah I'm fine, don't worry about me', He told her, walking into his room.
`No Mike I have to worry I'm your sister', she said, having the door shut on her face. She started banging her fists against the door.
`You know that isn't going to help', Tre told her, pulling her back. He pushed up his weight against the door, and slowly forced it opened. Mike lay looking asleep on the floor.
`Mike you alright?', Steph asked him again, kneeling down to his side.
`Yeah fine', he told her. Warm blood was coming though the side of his jumper. Steph jumped at the site.
`Why didn't you tell me? When did you do this? Why did you?', she barricaded him with questions.
`No reason', Mike told her, before he's eyes started to roll backwards.
`Here, Tre stay with him, and I'll go next door and see if their home, the guy there's a doctor', Steph said, dropping everything she had and running out of the room. Tre bent down beside his friend and took a look at the gash. It was already starting to heel itself.
`Mike, you know she's going to want to know why you did it?', Tre told him.
`Yeah, she knows why, trust me', Mike answered him. A few minutes later, Steph and the neighbour came thought the door.
-25 MINUTES LATER-
`Thanks for the help Dallas', Steph said, walking the neighbour out to the door.
`Its no problem', he replied, smiling and then getting back to his previous activities. Steph closed the door and ran back to Mike's room. She found them on the bed, Tre reading, some-ones written poetry to Mike.
"I thought of dying
gazing into the black, seductive ice water
so glassy and so tranquil
I thought of dying
but in my place
Death's bony embrace
clutched listless children
gnawed by hunger;
prisoners on death row
detritus of their own childhoods;
poor shepherds grazing blunt-toothed animals
on landmine hillsides
I thought of dying,
to throw myself away
so much landfill
If it's no use to me
I could give it
I can holler with my lungs
at injustice
join hands in protest
at brutality
I realized that I had long been dead
but I could choose instead
to reawaken
and be alive for them"
Tre finished. Mike looked up at the door and saw Steph just looking at him. She walked over to him and took a look at his stiches. Being careful no to hurt him, she put his arm back down on the bed.
`We'll leave you relax', Steph told him, grabbing Tre's hand causing him to drop the poem, as she walked him out of the room. Tears started to come to her eyes, but she held them back and continued walking to the lounge room.
`You alright? Come on I'll go make you something', Tre told her, hugging her gently, to show comfort and compassion. Steph buried her head into his chest even more. Tre rubbed her back for support, as she broke down into tears.
`Steph its gonna be alright?', he told her, hugging her a little tighter.
`Yeah, I guess it will be. Mike's that kinda guy', Steph sniffled out. She pushed her self off of Tre slowly and walked to the phone.
`I'm gonna call Billie', Steph told him. Tre's eyes looked down, and started to turn stormy blue.
`You alright about it?', she asked him. He looked back up at her.
`Yeah, you do what you want, I'll go make something?', he told her, quickly walking into the kitchen. Steph picked up the phone and started dialling.
`Hey Bill, yeah it's cool....no it's Mike....okay I'll see you in a couple of minutes then'. Slowly Steph put down the receiver and walked into the kitchen. She stood at the door watching Tre put something into the oven.
`You alright?', she asked, `Billie should be here soon'. Tre cringed at the name again. He turned and looked at her.
`Yeah, I guess...', he let out, taking a seat on one of the bench chairs. Steph walked up behind him, and put her arms around him.
`Thanks for being her', she told him, running her fingers though his hair. He started to enjoy it, but knew it couldn't and wouldn't last as Billie was coming. He moved away from her. She looked started for a while, but then, went to the door as she heard knocking coming from it.
`Maybe she does, no come on she has Billie she wouldn't', Tre thought..
