Lost For Words, chapter 6
-Be back later at the pier- was what was written on the note stuck on his mirror.
‘Great, now I’ll have to go down to the pier’, Steph thought. She took a look outside the window. Pitch black. She looked over at the digital clock. ‘6.30’, it read.
‘Steph what are you doing?’, Billie asked her, rubbing his eyes, as she stood at Tre’s bedroom door looking straight at her. Steph walked up to him, and gave him a hug
‘Listen, I have to go find Tre, about something. You stay here, and when I get back I wanna talk to you’, she told him, walking past him to get to her room, to change into something appropriate to wear outside.
-20 Minutes later at the pier-
‘Tre. Tre’, Steph called. It was the oldest she had seen it and felt it for a while. She walked along, the coast line, trying to think of where he’d actually be. ‘Pier’ wasn’t very detailed. He could have been at the loading docks or the boat wharfs. She continued walking with each step, her feet, sinking into water soaking sand. The cold was starting to fight through her layers of clothing as well. Her jumper, hoodie, and coat, didn’t seem like they were doing much. She came to the end of the pier.
‘Tre, you here?’, she screamed. No reply came back. Steph decided to walk to the end. There was no harm in it, and the breeze would probably do her good, from all those days in the house. At the end sat a familiar figure.
‘Tre?’, Steph asked, as she approached. He turned around and glared deeply at her. Almost like he was trying to see though her.
‘ What do you want?’, he asked coldly. Steph bit her lip with nervousness. She knew of the possibility of what Tre might do. The fight the night before after the hurt was painful. Though he was drunk at the time, she decided not to tell anyone about it, faking that the scares were from a gym class she had taken.
‘I thought we should talk, you know with the fight and all’, she let out, sitting down next to him. Tre looked over at her, and let out a mumble which didn’t really make sense.
‘Why, you’re a bitch, there’s nothing to talk about’, he told her.
‘Listen, don’t you get all aggressive with me, I’m only here to help’, Steph told him, rasing her voice.
‘Fine then you’re a slut, and when I told you I hated you on New Years Eve I meant it’, he said, standing up.
‘Tre, no don’t, just wait, I want to talk to you, and get this bullshit over with’, she told him, getting up and following him. He turned around and glared at her again.
‘Listen don’t try to act all innocent on me. I say you two together on NYE, making out, it’s not a secret anymore, so don’t act like it is’, Tre told her.
‘Yeah, but you told me there was another girl. You told me you despised me. You told me that we were over, and well Billie seemed to make it right’, Steph explained. Tre breathed in deeply, trying not to make his tears become noticeable. Steph though just let her emotions run free.
‘Tre come on, don’t tell me you don’t love me anymore. Cos I can tell you know, I probably feel the same way you do’, Steph whimpered.
‘You hurt me’, he told her.
‘Yeah and you hurt me’.
‘You told me that you loved me’.
‘And I meant it’.
‘Then why were you with Billie that night?’.
‘You said there was another girl, what I was meant to do. Like I said, Billie just made everything seem right’.
Tre took a deep breath in. His tears stained his eyes with sadness, before he looked up at Steph.
‘I lied. The moment I saw, Billie come and I knew that you were drunk; I thought I wouldn’t stand a chance’, Tre told her. Steph put out a hand, and started rubbing his back.
‘Why didn’t you just tell me this before?’, she asked, ‘And there was another girl I saw her with you’.
‘Yeah, but I didn’t love her. I still don’t, not the way I have feelings for you’, he cried.
‘Well tell me how your feelings are. I can’t figure anything out if you don’t tell me anything’, she told him. He glared at her a little longer, walking towards her slowly.
‘Tre what are you doing?’, she asked. with in the spilt second, she was pushed back into the water. Her teeth started to chatter, and the clothing she was wearing was weighing her down.
‘Tre, help, please’, Steph screamed, trying to keep afloat as best she could. The first jacket came off.
‘Tre, please I need your help’, she gasped, before being pulled under, by the over current. Tre turned around and saw nothing, he ran over to the edge.
‘Steph’, he murmured. She came back up for a moment.
‘Tre please you have to help me’, he told him as the second jumper came off. he went to turn away, as if to say, ‘your alright your up now’.
‘Tre please, help me, I love......’, she managed to get out as the second set of currents pulled her down. This time Tre came back, and knelt over the edge.
‘You what?’, he asked her sarcastically.
‘I love you’, she screamed.
‘And what about Billie?’, he asked.
‘Billie’s kind of like a crush, I don’t feel for him the same way I do for you’, Steph screamed again before going under. She made her way back up, shaking her head to get the water out of her ears.
‘No its not, you love him’, Tre told her. Tears started to swell into his eyes.
‘Maybe I do, maybe I don’t, but Tre what I’m saying is true, you have to trust me’, she gasped, ‘Please’.
Tre turned away and put his hand out. Steph grabbed it, and he pulled her up out onto the pier.
‘Thank you’, Steph gasped again. The air seemed like it was harder to breath and she was still drowning in the water that her clothes had collected.
‘Listen, I’ll talk to you later’, Tre told her, before he got up and started to walk away.
‘Tre no just stay for a minute’, Steph screamed out, but it was no use, he had already started running away from her. Steph watched him, disappear into the thin fog. Chilling sensations came up and down her spine. She picked herself up and walked as quickly as she could to the house, thinking only of what had just happened, and what she has just told to who she thought was the man of her dreams. By the time she had gotten to the house, her clothes were practically dragging. She made her way into the house, crying for her brother.
‘Mike, Mikey’, she yelled, ‘Mikey I need to talk to you’. Mike came rushing down the stairs as soon as he heard her voice.
‘Steph, what’s wrong? Why are you wet?’, he asked. Steph looked up into his eyes, as she gave him a hug.
Mike rubbed her back and tried to settle her down.
‘Mike’, she said, weakly.
‘Yeah’, he said to her, looking over her to see if she was alright. She looked back up at him, before pushing him away.
‘No don’t worry, I’ll talk to you later’, she told him, before she retreated back up to her room.
‘Steph’, Mike called her back, but she locked herself in her room, and waited until she knew the time was right..
