Take My Hand And Lead Me Somewhere New, chapter 1
"Billie. Billie? Wake up. Your friends are here to see you." The next thing I remember, I'd rolled onto the floor and my glass of water had tipped over me. I tell you, it's a very quick wake up.
"Hey man. You're wet."
"No, really? I hadn't noticed." Tre is my bestest friend in the whole world, but he's really, really stupid. I make a point to keep him away from sharp objects. "Who's the girl?" I asked curiously, looking at the smallish girl in my room. She was hot.
"This is Alex, she's my new girlfriend," Tre grinned, red with a mix of happiness and embarassment.
"Hey," was all she said all day. Even when we took her out to lunch, she pointed at what she wanted. As she got up to go to the loo, I leaned over to Tre.
"Hey, man, does the chick ever speak?"
"She doesn't speak much English, she's from Canada I think." I didn't dare to say anything else after that, in case I got an even stupider answer. Oh shit, now I'm using words that aren't even real. I spend too much time with that guy.
I noticed as she returned that she was talking to people around her. People I knew well. Who I knew only spoke English.
"Hey, Tre, if she doesn't speak much English, how come she can hold a conversation with Dom and his lot?"
"Maybe they can speak Canadian?"
"Tre, Canadian is English. They're speaking English." I could hear the coggs whirling round in Tre's head.
"I'm gonna see if I can hear what they're saying."
Tre stood glued to the spot for about five minutes, before coming back to sit with me. He had tears rolling down his face, and a betrayed look in his eyes.
"It's all a joke, she's going out with me for a joke." I moved next to him and put my arm around him.
"It's okay, man. There'll be other girls."
"I know, but I really thought she liked me."
"Tre, you two were going out for two days." That comment just made him cry harder. "Look, let's go home, get some pizza and pretend none of this ever happened, okay?"
"Okay," he sobbed.
