Abandoned At A Green Day Concert, chapter 9

We talked for a couple of seconds at the table, and the waitress brought us our drinks and bowls. I told Mike to stay at the table and watch my purse while I got my salad, and I would watch it when I got back so he could get his, but he told me he'd feel better if he went with me. I took my purse and we went and got our salads without being bothered.

We had been eating for a while, and we hadn't been bothered yet. Jack was still there, but he seemed to either be wary of Mike being there, or he was planning something. I couldn't tell which, but I hoped it was the first one. After a few more minutes, Mike let out a relieved sigh. "He's gone, we don't have to worry anymore," he said after I gave him a weird look.
"I don't know about that," I said, "There's no telling what's going on in that head of his. He might be planning something, so we'll just have to be careful."

"Well," Mike said after some thought, "I guess we'll go back to WalMart, and I'm coming in with you this time, no matter what you say. Don't worry about buying underwear in front of me, I wear it too. Just... not bras, but that doesn't matter." I started to protest as we stood to leave, but he put his finger over my lips to quiet me. "I'm coming with you," he said, "and you can't stop me." He chuckled at having said this, and then let out a fake evil laugh. I smiled, glad he was so determined to protect me. No one had ever bothered to care so much before.

We pulled into the WalMart parking lot once again, and walked inside. It was nearly 6:00 by this time, so it was already getting dark. I snuggled up next to Mike as we walked in, because I was somewhat afraid to think of who might me lurking around waiting for us.

As we checked out after I got done shopping, I was glad that we hadn't run into Jack yet. I started to become more relaxed and happy. Mike joked as we walked out that he had never seen underwear make someone so happy. I laughed, and suddenly felt something tug at my jacket as we passed the gardening department outside. I jumped and gave a little scream, as Mike spun around, fists in the air. I laughed when I saw it was just a tree that my jacket had gotten snagged on, and Mike heaved a sigh of relief. We chuckled at what had happened, and continued to walk to the car.

Mike started the car, and the clock said it was about 6:45. We had spent some time playing the video game demos in the electronics department, and stood listening to the sattelite radio that they had, changing it to lame rap or country stations and blasting the volume. We took off down the road, and then Mike took an unexpected turn. "I want to take you somewhere..." he said.
"Okay," I said, wondering where he was taking me.
