Billie Joe and Lizzie Jane, chapter 1
Lizzie Jane pecked her boyfriend Tom on the cheek and said good night. He had walked her to her door after their first date. She had liked Tom for weeks now but was to shy to say anything, but then unexpectedly he asked her to the movies. It went quite well, they laughed and talked and had a lot in common. He even put his arm aroud her during the movie. She walked up to her room feeling happy, waving to her mum as she walked past. As she expected a brown-headed boy sat on her bed waiting anxiously.
"Hi Lizzie! How'd it go? Was it good, did you kiss? Was he nice to you? If he was mean I'll bash him if you want!" Billie Joe said in one excited breath...
Billie and Lizzie were the best of friends. They lived next door and their mums were best friends too. They even had the same birthday. Billie Joe Armstrong and Lizzie Jane Harvey, both fifteen and attending the same school. Billie Joe adored Lizzie and would do anything for her. They had grown up together and knew everything there was to know about each other. The only time they were separated was a brief period in the third grade when Lizzie was told that Billie had boy germs by a girl at school, and they shouldn't play anymore. But after one recess without Billie, Lizzie couldn't stand it she would rather take the risk of getting infected.
"It was great Billie! He was nice; the movie was fine we talked and stuff. Then he walked me home and kissed me on the cheek!" Lizzie said blushing. Billie smiled and pulled Lizzie into his lap on the bed squeezing her tight. "I'm so happy for ya Liz! It seems like you haven't been on a date in decades!" he said. Lizzie wriggled free and walked to her wardrobe. "Oi!" she said but was laughing too. She searched for something in her closet.
"Here it is" Billie said handing her the big pink T-shirt she slept in. "Thanks honey" said Lizzie and stood in front of Billie for him to unzip her dress.
Lizzie looked at Billie while she got changed. He sat there quietly on her bed flipping through an old issue of Rolling Stone. How many boys could be trusted to change in front of without them being a sleazy pervert? But then even if he did watch her change, not that he would, but it wouldn't be awkward because they shared everything. Lizzie remembered the first time she got her monthly visitor. It was when she was fourteen and they were at school. Lizzie was unprepared and had nothing with her. She was crying and told Billie. He skipped class and ran to the shop to get her what she needed. Then he went home and got her a change of clothes. He came back to school and found her still crying in the girl's toilets. Then he took her home and cuddled on her bed as she cried all afternoon.
Lizzie went into the bathroom to wash her make up off and brush her teeth. She noticed Billie Joe had got out the bottle of make up remover for her and put the right amount of tooth paste on her brush. Lizzie smiled; he really was the sweetest boy in the world. Not that anyone else knew it though. At school Billie was the lead in the punk rock band, who sold joints for two dollars behind the shed, who swore at the teachers and wolf whistled when girls walked past. Lizzie was the girl who got strait A's and stayed up late doing homework, took ballet class on Saturday's and wore a lot of pink. But when they were together they were the happiest and would do anything for one another. One time as a desperate measure Billie's mom, Ollie, said if he didn't get at least a C average on his report she would confiscate his prized possession, his guitar 'Blue,' for a month. Lizzie Jane stayed up all night finishing all Billie's assignments and reports and revising with him for the test the next day. That was the best report Billie ever got, three C's and four B's.
Lizzie came back into her room and pulled back her quilt. Billie came back into the room, immense concentration on his face as he carried two steaming mugs of hot chocolate. Lizzie jumped up and helped him, grabbing the mugs and putting them on the bed table to cool. Billie sat behind Lizzie on the bed and tied back her long brown curly hair into a pony tail. "I thought you were going out with Nicole tonight?" Lizzie asked.
"I broke up with her" he said.
"What why? You guys were great together; I thought you really liked her."
"I did but she just tried too hard. She just agreed with everything I did and said, she didn't have her own opinion. She was pretty and nice but I think that's all I liked about her. I don't even know what she's into she just tries to like everything I like. It wears thin after a while."
Lizzie hugged Billie for a few minutes in the way you hug your best friend after a break up. She didn't need to say anything to Billie he knew she was there and that was enough. But Lizzie expected this to happen. Billie hardly talked about Nicole all week. Lizzie had noticed too the way Nicole just agreed with everything, she was nice but probably better suited to one of those self-absorbed preppy school council type boys, and Billie Joe wasn't like that.
They drank their hot chocolate and then Lizzie climbed into bed. Billie took off his shoes and pants. Then he took off his t-shirt. In just his boxes he climbed into bed with Lizzie and turned off the lamp. Lizzie only had a single bed and it was a bit squishy. Since Lizzie and Billie were always sleeping over, Lizzie's mum offered to get out the spare mattress for Billie to sleep on but they turned it down. They didn't mind sharing the little bed. Lizzie rolled on her side as she did every night and as usual Billie wrapped his arms around her waist. He kissed her cheek and whispered "night bub"
She whispered back "love you"
"Love you too".
The alarm went off at seven. Lizzie groaned and hit the sleep button. Then she got up and grabbed her towel to go to the bathroom. Billie Joe woke up too. It was Saturday meaning Lizzie was off to ballet. While she was in the shower he stumbled out of bed and got out her pink ballet stockings and navy leotard. He grabbed her ballet shoes and her track suit and laid it all out on the bed for her. He pulled on his pants and t-shirt and went downstairs and greeted Lizzie's parents. He wasn't feeling great this morning. He needed a hit so he grabbed a joint from his pocket and went outside. Lizzie didn't approve of him doing it in the house. When he was done he went back inside and back into bed.
When Lizzie got out of the shower she walked into her room in her towel. All of her ballet gear was ready and Billie Joe was back in bed. She got dressed and then did her hair. Billie had fallen asleep again so she kissed his head and whispered "bye Hun" and left trying not to wake him.
When Lizzie got downstairs two guys were waiting at the door she greeted them each with a friendly hug. "Hey Mike, Tre, you can go in Mum's making breakfast. Billie's asleep don't wake him yet though, he's not feeling great, and things didn't work out with Nicole." "Thanks Liz, I'm kinda hungry" said Mike entering the house. Tre said "You going to ballet?" Lizzie nodded. "I'll walk you" he said.
They walked a few blocks and were talking and laughing. Lizzie loved Mike and Tre too. They played in Billie's band Green Day and were the biggest goof balls you could find. The four of them hung out at school together. They weren't all that popular but they had fun.
Tre started doing some deranged attempt at a cartwheel that looked like an octopus giving birth. It made Lizzie laugh so much her ribs hurt. Tre always new how to make anyone laugh, that was his gift, that and playing the drums.
"So how'd it go with Tom last night?" Tre asked.
"Great, he was really nice we had a good time. He asked me to come over his house today but I don't think I'll go."
"Why?"
"Well I'm worried about Billie. You know how he gets after a breakup. He's already had one joint this morning, and he had some last night cause I could smell it when he came to bed."
"Seriously Liz, go to Tom's, it'll be fun. Me and Mike will stay with him today, we've gotta practice anyway."
"Really? You're the best Tre! Tell Billie I'll be at his house tonight" Lizzie kissed Tre on the cheek and ran inside the ballet studio.
Tre arrived back at Lizzie's about fifteen minutes later. He walked up to Lizzie's room and saw Billie still in her bed. Mike was in there too sitting on the end of the bed eating some toast. Billie mumbled "where've you been?"
"I walked Lizzie to ballet."
"Oh... "
"Do you sleep with her every night?"
"Yep."
"Why?"
"Lizzie's my best friend"
"Mike's my best friend and I don't sleep with him"
"Yeah but if you wanted to I'd support it one hundred percent"
"You know what I mean"
"I don't know why, I've been sleeping with Lizzie forever, since we were babies we've slept in the same crib. Anyway, what's up with all these questions?"
"What about when you're going out with chicks, do they know you're sleeping with another girl?"
"I'm not sleeping with another girl!"
"Well you're in the same bed asleep aren't you?"
"Yeah but that's it! If I got into a serious relationship with another girl Lizzie wouldn't care! She'd support it. And same with me I don't care if she wants to go sleep with her boyfriend Tom, or whoever, if she wanted to that's totally cool."
"So you don't care that she's gone to Tom's this afternoon after ballet"
Billie was a little shocked, two dates in two days! This must be serious. But he covered up his surprise by smiling and saying. "That's great!"
Meanwhile after ballet Tom came and picked up Lizzie. They decided since it was warm to go to the beach. Lizzie brought her bikini. "I'll go and change into my bathers, can you go get some ice cream?" she said to Tom and handed him her purse. Tom opened it and got out five dollars for two chocolate Sundaes. He glanced at the photo in the plastic pocket; it was a picture of Billie and Lizzie at the beach. Lizzie was on Billie's back in her bikini her cheek pressed against his smiling. Billie was smiling too, wearing board shorts holding onto Lizzie's legs.
Lizzie returned from the change room in a pink bikini. She sat at the table with Tom. There were two chocolate sundaes waiting. Tom passed Lizzie her purse still open. "Nice photo" he said.
"My hair's awful I know I dunno what I was thinking but Billie looks cute there."
Tom was quiet for a while. Then when they finished he gestured to go into the water. Tom was fine after that, they were swimming and laughing when he asked "Do you want to come over tonight, we could watch some movies?"
"Oh, Tom I'm sorry but I've got to stay at Billie's tonight."
"Why?"
"Well he broke up with his girlfriend yesterday and I don't want him to be alone."
"Do you stay at his often?"
"Yeah all the time, when he's not staying at mine that is!"
"Why do you do that?"
"Cause he's my best friend!"
"What do you do?"
"Nothing really, just sleep and eat!"
"But you sleep in different rooms?"
"No we sleep together"
"In the same bed?"
"Yeah."
An expression of anger came across Tom's face and he walked out of the water. Lizzie ran after him.
"Where are you going?"
"I don't want to go out with a girl who is sleeping with another guy every night" Lizzie grabbed his shoulder but he pulled her hand off and punched her in the eye and took off. Lizzie fell to the ground crying. Maybe Tom was right, maybe it was wrong to be so close to Billie?
She went back to the ballet studio and practiced by herself for a while, she needed to think...
Billie Joe, Tre and Mike had been playing in Billie's basement for a couple of hours now though none of them said much... Billie was thinking about what Tre said before. Maybe he was right, maybe he should stop sleeping with Lizzie after all they were only friends, best friends, but nothing more.
At about seven Billie went up to his room. Tre and Mike were still in his lounge room eating anything and everything. "Hi Lizzie!" said Tre and Mike together. "Hey guys, where's Billie Joe?"
"Up in his room, what happened to your eye?" asked Mike
"Accident at dancing, I'm so clumsy, fell flat on my face!" Lizzie lied and went upstairs.
Billie sat on his bed strumming some chords on Blue. "Hi Liz"
"Hey Bill"
"What happened to your eye?"
"Nothing, dancing you know how unco I am"
"Maybe you should stay at your place tonight"
"Yeah I think so, well bye" and Lizzie left.
That was the hardest thing Billie ever had to do, but he was convinced it was the right thing. Maybe now they could both start a serious relationship.
Lizzie walked downstairs, trying not to cry. She knew it was for the best though; it was okay when they were kids but a fifteen year old boy and girl who were just friends shouldn't be so close. She had to look happy because Tre and Mike were still downstairs.
"Night boys! Got to get my beauty sleep!" she gave them each a kiss on the cheek and headed to her house next door.
Mike looked at Tre after Lizzie left. "Good one man, look what you've done!" said Mike
"What?"
"Your little lecture about him and Liz, he's pushin' her away now man!"
"That's his choice, not mine"
"Why'd you do that though anyway, the guy just broke up with Nicole and now your on his back about what him and Lizzie do, he's gonna be really screwed up now!"
"I didn't mean to do that I just.... Nothing"
"Come on Tre you can tell me man,"
"I think I like Lizzie"
"Oh man, this is gonna screw up everything!"
"I know, but I do and can't help it"
"Alright dude, if you feel that way fine, but you can't take it out on Billie because it's not his fault that you like her! He needs her now, it's nearly September and that's when he needs her most. Look lets go to sleep and in the morning I'll come with you to talk to Billie"
"Thanks man, do you think Billy will care that we're crashing on his couch?"
"Nah, he was all for us sleeping together remember!"
Billie couldn't sleep. He never realized how big a single bed could be. He missed holding Lizzie.
Lizzie went to bed. Her room looked so serene, done up in pink with floral bed spread and porcelain dolls on the shelf. She missed the way Billie's messy brown hair clashed with the colour of her walls room and his dirty converses sitting at the end of her bed. She felt cold without his arm around her at night. She couldn't sleep. She didn't care how weird it was she wanted Billie. So in her big pink t-shirt she headed downstairs. She checked the time on the microwave- 1:05 she opened the front door into the street and she saw him.
Billie couldn't take it any more; he needed his best friends back. When he walked outside in his boxer shorts at one AM he saw Lizzie walking towards him. He hugged her so tightly and never wanted to let her go. She buried her head in his chest and began to cry and they walked back into Lizzie's house. They went up to Lizzie's room and lay on her bed facing each other. "I'm sorry I shouldn't have told you to leave, I had a fight with Tre, he thinks it's weird that we're so close" sobbed Billie
"Oh honey you don't need to be sorry. I'm sorry I shouldn't have lied to you. Tom broke up with me because he thinks you and me are too close, he punched me, that's why my eye is black" Lizzie said
"I'm so sorry, he's a bastard, no I'm a bastard, and I shouldn't have treated you like that. I'll never let anyone hurt you again. I love you Lizzie Jane."
"I love you Billie Joe"
Tre heard Billie creeping down the stairs and followed him. He hid behind a tree out the front. Lizzie was there and hugged Billie, and then walked with her back too her house. Tre followed them inside after they went upstairs. He silently crept upstairs after them and listened outside Lizzie's room. He heard muffled by crying parts of their conversation Billie said "I'm sorry........ Had a fight with Tre.........." And Lizzie said something like ".... Don't need to be sorry............... Lied to you.............. Tom broke up.................... Eyes black."
And then clearer Tre heard Billie say "I love you Lizzie Jane" and Lizzie say "I love you Billie Joe" and Tre felt a tear run down his cheek.
